1 Parish Mission Statement We the people of Our Lady of the Snows Parish are a Catholic Christian community who reach out to one another and to all people by teaching and giving witness to the Good News of Jesus Christ. Our mission is to invite all to hear, share, and live the Word of God. We try to inspire an awareness of our faith and to encourage others to renew and energize that faith in Jesus and His Church. We want to welcome the entire community to enjoy the warmth and love of our parish by participating fully in the sacramental life of the Church. 3 Dear Parishioners: The Christmas Season continues today on the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord and will conclude tomorrow on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. It seems to come to an abrupt end just like the Fourth Sunday of Advent two weeks ago! Ever Ancient Ever New Our Lady of the Snows R. C. Church Yet this holy season and its celebrations have been beautiful expressions of faith for all of us. I would be amiss if I failed to express the gratitude I have for you who made Christmas so special with your presence and prayer. May the peace of this Christmas Season fill your hearts and within your families throughout the New Year. In addition I want to thank particularly some people who made the seasons of Advent and Christmas a spiritual journeying for all. To all the priests and deacons who presided at our liturgies and led all of us into a deeper understanding of the Incarnation-Event. To the sisters in the Convent who generously participated in many of our programs and times of prayer throughout the seasons. To our liturgical ministers (lectors, altar servers, sacristans, ministers of hospitality, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion) who assisted faithfully and reverently. To the wonderful team of church decorators who enhanced our beautiful church with Christmas plants, trees, wreaths, etc. Every year this talented team transforms our beautiful church into an even more elegant place for worship. To those behind the scenes including our custodial and administration staffs that made everything run smoothly and without any difficulty. To Mrs. Lisa Kelly and our parish choirs who lifted up our spirits and voices with wonderful Christmas carols and other musical pieces and continues to do so this afternoon at our Epiphany Concert in the church with A Renaissance Celebration at Epiphany. To Mr. Joseph Venticinque and Mrs. Regina Moreno who along with the faculty, catechists and staffs shared the true Christmas spirit with the children in the parish. To Ms. Doreen Walz and the Human Concerns Center that brightened Christmas for many in the community with Christmas gifts and donations. Lastly, to you, the great and wonderful parishioners at Our Lady of the Snows - your sharing of time, talent and treasure throughout the year and especially during this Season of Giving is deeply appreciated. Gifts under the Advent Giving Tree, donations for the Christmas plants, your fair share offering/gift to the Church at Christmas and many best wishes were overwhelming and touching. As we embark into a New Year may we support one another with our prayer and presence. May we encourage others to join with us in our worship and ministry at Our Lady of the Snows. May God look kindly on our endeavors and give us peace. IN YOUR CHARITY PLEASE PRAY FOR The sick, homebound and hospitalized... We continue to pray for the sick of the parish every day. If you have a name to be included in the bulletin, please call the Parish Office and let us know. In the event that the person recovers, we ask you to notify us, so we can keep our sick list updated. 4 EPIPHANY CONCERT. All are invited to a special Renaissance Celebration at Epiphany musical concert in the church this afternoon at 3:00 PM. Parishioners, friends, neighbors and guests will delight in the beautiful sounds of the Renaissance Age performed by our adult choir, children and handbell choirs, the Indian choir and the Himig At Alay choir. All are asked to donate a new or slightly used men s winter coat to help those in the Bowery section of Manhattan. Light refreshments will be shared after the concert. R. C. I. A. CHRISTIAN INITIATION. Do you know a family member or friend who is interested in becoming a Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a wonderful process in our parish available to those who feel called to the Catholic Faith. The RCIA is also available for those Catholics who have not yet received First Communion or Confirmation. Please call the Faith Formation Office ( ) for more information. UPCOMING MEETINGS PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL MEETING takes place this Monday, January 8 th at 7:30 PM. The meeting will take place in the Parish Meeting Room. GOLDEN AGE FRIENDSHIP CLUB S next meeting will be this Wednesday, January 10th in Bishop Chappetto Hall. New members are welcome. HOLY NAME SOCIETY Communion Mass and meeting takes place next Sunday, January 14 th beginning at 9:30AM in the church. All men in the parish are encouraged to become Holy Name Society members. January is the month of the Holy Name of Jesus and we give special honor to the name of Jesus. CHURCH ENVELOPES. Thank you to those parishioners who called to tell us about not receiving the monthly packet of envelopes. If you have had any problem recently or in the past please call Pat at the front desk (extension 0 ) and give her your full address and envelope number. RECITATION OF THE ROSARY takes place each morning in the church before the 9AM Mass. All are invited to pray the Mysteries of The Rosary each day before Mass. PARISH PILGRIMAGE to Rome, Assisi, Siena and Florence takes place Sunday, April 8 th to Tuesday, April 17 th, 2018 in observance of our Parish Anniversary Year in 2018! See the attractive brochures on the tables in the Gathering Space and prepare for a spiritual pilgrimage to the Eternal City of Rome with a papal audience and Mass at St. Mary Major, a stay in Assisi (the birthplace of St. Francis and St. Clare), a visit to Siena (witness the relics of St. Catherine of Siena) and Florence with its famous museums and fine restaurants. VOCATIONS THOUGHT The Parish Vocations Committee would like to offer the following reflection from Becoming Who You Are: Insights on the True Self from Thomas Merton and Other Saints, by James Martin, S.J.: "I tried to bring all of myself to each (job)...all my talents and skills and gifts as well as my struggles and limitations and failings. I brought all of these things because that's who God brought there. 6 ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASSES ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASSES. Any Catholic adult who has not received the sacrament of Confirmation is invited to participate in a program of preparation being offered in the area parishes. The classes will be held on a monthly basis beginning this Wednesday, January 10 th in the Faculty Room of the school. The Sacrament of Confirmation for adults will be administered on Pentecost Sunday, May 20 th at the 11:00 AM Mass. The Brooklyn Diocese will have two buses going for the March For Life in Washington, DC on Friday, January 19th. The bus will leave from the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston at 6:30AM. 7 CHRISTMAS PLANTS. For those who donated this year with the Christmas plants that graced our church you are invited to take home a plant beginning this Tuesday, January 9th. Thank you for your offering to this year s Christmas plants. CONFIRMATION PREP MASS takes place next Sunday, January 14th at the 9:30AM Mass. Our Confirmation candidates will be present with their families and we are pleased to have Robert Rodriguez offer a reflection on his journey of faith and the working of the Holy Spirit in his young life. Please keep these young men and women in your prayers by taking home a prayer card today especially as they look forward to completing their initiation into the Catholic Church at Confirmation. He spoke to the students about sportsmanship, teamwork and doing well in school. He told us about the Islanders Grades for Blades program which can be found on our website. All the children and staff had fun with Sparky and the NY Islanders representatives. Even our Ranger fans gave Sparky a High Five.
