1 Parish Mission Statement We the people of Our Lady of the Snows Parish are a Catholic Christian community who reach out to one another and to all people by teaching and giving witness to the Good News of Jesus Christ. Our mission is to invite all to hear, share, and live the Word of God. We try to inspire an awareness of our faith and to encourage others to renew and energize that faith in Jesus and His Church. We want to welcome the entire community to enjoy the warmth and love of our parish by participating fully in the sacramental life of the Church. The Christmas letter from the pastor asks that every parishioner prayerfully make a fair share offering during this holy season. 4 ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASSES ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASSES. Any Catholic adult who has not received the sacrament of Confirmation is invited to participate in a program of preparation being offered in the area parishes. The classes will be held on a monthly basis beginning on Wednesday, January 10 th in the Faculty Room of the school. The Sacrament of Confirmation for adults will be administered on Pentecost Sunday, May 20 th at the 11:00 AM Mass. Please contact Mrs. Regina Moreno, Pastoral Associate, at or her at rel.ed@olsnows.org to make an appointment and to register for the classes. Information flyers are also available on the tables in the Gathering Space of the church. QUEENS DEANERY #5 QUEENS DEANERY #5. Join Queens Deanery #5 on Facebook where you will learn about the upcoming spiritual events in the parishes in the Deanery. NOCTURNAL ADORATION THE NOCTURNAL ADORATION SOCIETY invites all parishioners to Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament this First Friday, January 5th, beginning at 7:00PM in the church. A Holy Hour will begin at 8:00PM and conclude with Benediction. A reminder that Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament takes place every Thursday afternoon following the 12Noon Mass concluding with Benediction at 4:00PM. SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS. As part of the Church s call to evangelization we invite you to take an extra bulletin to a friend or neighbor in the community who may inquire about Our Lady of the Snows Parish. Parents whose children attend public school during the week are reminded to register their children for Faith Formation classes. Please call the Faith Formation Office at (718) about registration and other information. WELCOME TO OUR CATHOLIC FAMILY The following children were baptized here at Our Lady of the Snows Parish in December. We offer our sincere Congratulations and Best Wishes to the family of: Arianna Belle Serrano Yuson NEWLY BAPTIZED. All the children who were baptized at Our Lady of the Snows in the last year are invited to the 12:30PM Mass on Sunday, January 14th. They, along with parents and godparents, will receive a special blessing. Everyone is invited to this special Mass for God s new family members. R. C. I. A. CHRISTIAN INITIATION. Do you know a family member or friend who is interested in becoming a Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a wonderful process in our parish available to those who feel called to the Catholic Faith. The RCIA is also available for those Catholics who have not yet received First Communion or Confirmation. Please call the Faith Formation Office ( ) for more information. AUTO DONATION. The St. Vincent de Paul Society will take any car, truck or van, running or not, and donate $75 to $200 per vehicle to Our Lady of the Snows. Any old or neglected vehicle sitting in your driveway or family member, friend or neighbor s driveway can be disposed of by calling (718) Free towing, any condition, IRS tax deduction. SCHOOL SCHEDULES. Faith Formation Classes for children will resume next Sunday, January 7 th and Our Lady of the Snows School will reopen this Tuesday, January 2 nd. OLS/HUMAN CONCERNS CENTER wishes to thank you for responding so generously to this year s Advent/Christmas Appeal. We were able to gift needy and homebound parishioners with food baskets, clothing, toys and toiletries - making for many a very Merry Christmas. 6 VOCATIONS THOUGHT The Parish Vocations Committee would like to offer the following reflection in preparation for January 1, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. Mary, who was empty of all egotism, free from all sin, was as pure as the glass of a very clean window that has no other function than to admit the light of the sun. If we rejoice in that light, we implicitly praise the cleanness of the window. And, of course, it might be argued that in such a case we might well forget the window altogether. This is true. And yet the Son of God, in emptying himself of his majestic power, having become a child, abandoning himself in complete dependence to the loving care of a human mother, in a certain sense draws our attention once again to her. The Light has wished to remind us of the window, because he is grateful to her and because he has an infinitely tender and personal love for her. If he asks us to share this love, it is certainly a great grace and a privilege, and one of the most important aspects of this privilege is that it enables us, to some extent, to appreciate the mystery of God s great love and respect for his creatures. Those interested in attending the Malayalam Mass are encouraged to be present. CHURCH ENVELOPES. The new packet of church envelopes was recently mailed to all registered parishioners who use the weekly envelopes. If you have had any problems recently or in the past please call Pat (extension 0 ) at the front desk and give her your full address and envelope number. We hope to solve the problem shortly but in the meanwhile please use the envelopes on the tables in the Gathering Space. If you do not receive envelopes we encourage you to formally register in the parish as active parishioners and help support the parish throughout the year. Lastly, we kindly ask you to mark your offering amount on the front of the envelope each week and avoid using scotch tape to seal the envelope. Thank you for your cooperation and generosity to Our Lady of the Snows Parish. RELIGIOUS CHRISTMAS STAMPS are still available for purchase in the Parish Office. Each book of twenty stamps costs $9.80 and exact change is appreciated. Please come to the Parish Office during regular hours (8:30AM-12Noon & 1PM 4PM) Mondays to Fridays. Thank you to the Evangelization Committee for its hard work in making the Christmas religious stamps available for everyone. New Hymnals We invite you to memorialize a hymnal for the year 2018 for a very modest donation of only $5.00 per hymnal. Please fill out the form below and return it to the Parish Office. The name of the person, in whose memory the new hymnal is donated, will be placed in the hymnals as we have done with this year s hymnals. The hymnals can be renewed each year. Thanks for your help. 7 OUR LADY OF THE SNOWS CATHOLIC ACADEMY is a school of excellence which offers a quality Catholic education to its students. Recent New York State testing results showed our parish school far exceeding state, city and diocesan scores in Language Arts and Math for Grades 4, 6 and 8. Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Academy follows the NYS and diocesan curriculum. The school has a morning and after school program for working parents, SMART Boards in the classrooms, Spanish and Art, full time nurse, Aquinas Honors Program, physical education, sacramental preparation and much more! UPCOMING MEETINGS GOLDEN AGE FRIENDSHIP CLUB S next meeting will be this Wednesday, January 3rd in Bishop Chappetto Hall. New members are welcome. HOLY NAME SOCIETY Communion Mass and meeting takes place on Sunday, January 14 th beginning at 9:30 AM in the church. All men in the parish are encouraged to become Holy Name Society members. January is the month of the Holy Name of Jesus and we give special honor to the name of Jesus. PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL MEETING takes place next Monday, January 8 th at 7:30 PM. The meeting will take place in the Parish Meeting Room. FEAST OF MARY MASS FEAST OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD is celebrated this Monday, January 1st. It is NOT a holyday of obligation this year because it falls on a Monday. However, everyone is encouraged to attend the New Year s Mass at 9:00AM.
