3 SFX Parish News Our Shared Stories of Mercy at St. Francis Xavier Divine Mercy in my life Fr. John Wang introduced me to the Divine Mercy devotion and chaplet in the mid 1990 s. He relayed the story of Saint Faustina and her book Divine Mercy in My Soul. In her diary, sister Faustina reveals her mystical experiences with our Lord and his teaching on the importance of trusting in his Divine Mercy. Concerning the Divine Mercy chaplet, He told her When this chaplet is said at the bedside of a dying person, God s anger is placated, unfathomable mercy envelops the soul. (Diary 811) My mother had surgery for breast cancer in 1993 and had a three-year remission after having chemotherapy. In 1996, the cancer spread to her lungs and metastasized to her bones. She had just turned 60 when she debilitated to a semi-conscious state. I visited her in NY at my brother s home the week before she died. As she slept, I prayed the Divine Mercy chaplet with the Image displayed at her bedside. She suddenly sat up wide-eyed and asked who taught me that beautiful prayer then returned to a peaceful sleep. Later the parish priest Fr. Gallagher entered to give her the sacrament of the sick and was pleased to see the Divine Mercy image as well. Another healing occurred when my Uncle touched by the Divine Mercy Image asked Fr. Gallagher to hear his confession. He had not been to the sacrament of reconciliation for over 30 years. This experience deeply touched my heart and I continue to pray for the sick using the Divine Mercy chaplet. Last summer, I visited my cousin Peggy who was in the terminal stages of esophageal cancer at Sloan Kettering Hospital in NY. I gave her a small prayer card of the image of the Divine Mercy Image and asked if she would like to pray the chaplet with me. The image of Divine Mercy touched her heart and she wanted me to recite the chaplet as she was unable to speak on a ventilator. I was tearful when it was time to leave and she consoled me by smiling and writing the words, I m not afraid. Peggy asked to have the Divine Mercy rosary I made buried with her when she passed July 20, This prayer has become part of my daily meditation and helped me in many difficult times. I was pleased to learn there is an organization Nurses for Divine Mercy which started in response to the tragic events of 9/11. Unable to help the victims medically, the nurses reached out spiritually, especially praying The Divine Mercy Chaplet for them. SFX Parish News Congratulations Rhonda Bargas& Kyle Schaff who celebrated the Sacrament of Marriage on July 23, We wish them every blessing. The Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life retreat, also known as SEEL, is a nine month retreat format of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola. This powerful, life-changing program of prayer and contemplation, can be experienced by busy men and women in the midst of their daily lives. Retreatants commit themselves to praying for one hour each day, meeting weekly with a spiritual director, and attending monthly Wednesday Retreat evenings. Mary & Martha Knitting Ministry This summer make a difference by getting together weekly with other women to knit prayer shawls for those in need. For three Sundays there will be a box in the back of the church in which you can put packages of new socks and underwear for needy kids in the Missoula valley. Position Opening: Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministry Billings The Diocese of Great Falls-Billings, Montana seeks a Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry to provide vision and direction for those whose efforts are directed to ministry with youth and young adults of the diocese. The Director implements and promotes the vision, goals and objectives, principles and components of Diocesan Youth and Young Adult Ministry guidelines at the diocese and parish levels in cooperation with the Diocesan Pastoral Plan. St. Mary s Pilgrimage Hike The Knights of Columbus - Our Lady of the Mountains Council is sponsoring the 63rd annual St. Mary Peak Pilgrimage Hike on Sunday, August 21st. The hike is 7.5 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 2400 to a final elevation of Participants gather at St. Mary Parish, 330 Charlos Street, Stevensville at 7AM for carpooling to the trailhead. The rosary is recited at rest stops along the trail. Mass is celebrated at the summit, followed by lunch before the descent. Pilgrims should be well-prepared physically and have adequate water, snacks, sturdy hiking footwear, lunch, and clothing for changing weather conditions. The Knights of Columbus will be providing a barbeque for pilgrims at St. Mary Parish following the hike.
