Let that sink in. The life of discipleship is not simply a way for me to guarantee my personal salvation. This kind of life is meant to be a sign and encouragement to others of the presence of God and his blessing in their lives, an inspiration for them to respond to God s goodness. As a pastor and having a Catholic school within the parish, I am used to asking for the people of God to volunteer and be good stewards. Many respond with great generosity and enthusiasm. Some are saying no before I finish asking the request. Most of us can think of situations where we absolutely do not want to be the center of attention or involved. What are some personality traits that make it so easy to not desire to reflect God s light? Mathew Kelly offers this list: fear, laziness, procrastination, selfishness, addiction, obsession, comparing yourself to others, allowing your critics to drain your energy and direct your life, an unwillingness to move beyond your comfort zone, self-doubt, negative relationships, worry and excuses. (Resisting Happiness pg 165) How many of these do you immediately think, that is me!!?? Their presence does not indicate that you are a bad person, but likely do mean that life can be a struggle for you. I wrestle with many of these on a given day, but the insidious one for me is comparison with another. I don t put myself down, because I recognize a talent or opportunity. However, because I believe that someone else can do it better, faster or more easily, I can talk myself out of doing what I know needs to be done. I am trying to train myself. When I feel like saying no, or not letting my light shine, I must explicitly check out, is this because I am comparing myself or is there another reason? Perhaps it will be useful to review this list for yourselves if you believe that you could be allowing God s light to shine through you more effectively. Name what is getting in your way and confront that attitude. Refuse to give it the power that it does not deserve to have. ober is Respect Life month. In addition to the horror of abortion on demand, we face continuing conflicts involving gender, race and sexuality. There are movements promoting euthanasia in several states, an increase in drug related deaths, suicide and many other affronts to the gift of life. Take some time this month to educate yourself on one of these topics. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website has many resources. Take the time to offer a prayer for those ensnared in the culture of death, that they may experience conversion and understanding. Our first Friday Holy Hour would be a wonderful opportunity to take some moments in prayer for those who are in great need. BLESSING OF ANIMALS: In celebration of the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi (ober 4), we will have the BLESSING OF ANIMALS on Saturday, ober 6, at 10:00 A.M. You are welcome to bring you cats, dogs, sheep, hamsters, rabbits, etc. Farm animals are especially welcome. For the safety of all the animals, dogs should be leashed and cats brought in carriers or carried in your arms (wearing a collar and leash to prevent runaways). Exploring Music Ministry: We will have a 4 week seminar on Exploring Music Ministry. Four sessions will be held being this Sunday Sept. 16 and ending ober 7th.
