See the following answer from Fr. Paul Turner (Director of the office of Divine Worship for the Diocese): Mary is patron of our country under the title of the Immaculate Conception. So even though in the United States the obligation is usually lifted from Holy Days that fall on a Saturday, it will not be on December 8, Catholics will be expected to participate at Mass on Friday night the 7th or Saturday morning the 8th and then return to participate again at Mass for the Second Sunday of Advent. Nativity of Mary will celebrate a Mass for the Holy Day on Friday, December 7, 2018 at 6:30 pm. Please note that the 8:30 am Mass on December 7th is not the Holy Day Mass.

This year Nativity School has 10 girls and 5 coaches participating in the program. The team practices three hours a week. The lessons are based on three parts: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large. Running is integrated throughout each lesson. The team is also participating in a service project for Free Hot Soup. The team is making sandwiches for the homeless. 6 NOVEMBER 11, THE THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The readings this Sunday seem to focus on generosity. The prophet Elijah asks an impoverished widow, who has almost nothing, to be generous. And she is. The letter to the Hebrews states that Jesus' offering of himself is an act of giving so substantial that it does not have to be repeated. In the Gospel a widow gives of her substance, in contrast to the rich who give a lot from their abundance but who have a lot more to give. The first reading hints that these scriptures are not only about giving. They are also about fear. Elijah tells the widow, "Do not be afraid" to give your all. The depth of generosity that God asks of us is only possible if we let go of our fear. GIVE EVERYTHING In First Kings, Elijah meets a widow and immediately makes a request that she promptly fulfills; then he makes another that she resists. His response is not to chastise her lack of charity but instead he says, as Jesus will say repeatedly say in the Gospels, "Do not be afraid." He recognizes that it is not lack of charity that prevents her from giving him a little food, it is fear, fear that she will not have enough for her son and herself given their dire straits. Elijah looks beyond the obvious. He asks something of her and then gives back to her, from God's abundance, something even greater. The same is true in Hebrews. Christ offers himself, not as the priest does with a life not his own, but as the genuine Son of God. Again in the Gospel, the substantive generosity of the impoverished widow is contrasted with the apparent generosity of the wealthy. The wealthy are found lacking. BE NOT AFRAID It is clear that God prefers the widow's generosity because it displays a lack of fear about what will happen if she leaves her life entirely in God's hands. The widow, who lacks material goods, still fears for her welfare and that of her family but both widows, in Mark and in Kings, overcome that fear to place their reliance on God. The wealthy, as we have seen before in the Gospels, have a lot more to give away before they would need to put their reliance entirely on God. Many cannot find the strength and courage to do so. They give big gifts to the temple thinking this will bring them favor, as it does in the world. But God asks more of us than the world does. God asks that we live our lives as if they depended entirely on God and not our own accomplishments. Because they do. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Company TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Veterans Day began with the signing of a symbolic treaty between the Allies and Germany ending World War I (then called the "Great War") on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The auspicious date was actually a well-established religious holiday, the feast of Saint Martin of Tours, a beloved soldier saint of the army of Rome. After World War II, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Britain, but of course the feast of Saint Martin endures. Martin was named after Mars, the god of war, and against the advice of his parents he went on his own to church. He became a catechumen at the age of ten. By fifteen he was enlisted in the cavalry in France. Coming across a poor man, Martin had an impulse to divide his bright red soldier's cape and clothe him. He later had the insight that he had served Christ, and the other half of his cape became a lifelong sign to him of his duty to serve the poor. Housed in a tiny church capella or "chapel," the cape became a great object of pilgrimage on the way to Compostella, and a favored place for the prayers of soldiers. Martin was not so eager to serve as bishop as he had been as a soldier, and legend says that he hid in a barn filled with geese to avoid episcopal election. To this day, the customary meal for November 11 is goose! Traditionally, this is the last feast day before winter closes in, and begins a period of fasting once known as "Saint Martin's Lent" or "Martinmas," that later developed into the season of Advent. 7 NOVEMBER 11, THE THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Creamed Soups Tuna Oatmeal Packages Instant Mashed Potatoes Canned Meats Canned Fruits Mac & Cheese Jelly St. Mary s Food Pantry St. Mary s Food Pantry is always in need of donations for our clients. However, they are overstocked with canned vegetables to last for years, so they are asking for help in collecting the following food items for their pantry... Tune Helper Boxes of Oatmeal Ramen Noodles Pasta Sides Pork and Beans Canned Chicken Pasta Sauce Manual Can Opener There is a barrel in the back of church where you can drop off your food items. If you have cash donations you can mail them directly to St. Mary s or give them to an usher and we will be sure to get them to St. Mary s for you. OPPORTUNITY TO HELP THOSE IN NEED Have you ever had food left over from a wedding, funeral or church/scout/sports event and not known what to do with it? Well, I have a solution to your leftover issues! I belong to a group called Free Hot Soup. Every Sunday, from 2-3 at Winner Park in Independence, we feed our homeless neighbors a hot meal, we also have hot soup available in the Fall, Winter and Spring, and we give a sack lunch to each person. We also provide clothing, shoes, coats and hygiene for those who need it. And then, after we serve at the park, we serve those who are not able to get to the park at various homeless camps. 100% of this group is run by volunteers. We feed about 80 people each week. There are so many ways you can help. You can provide a casserole or hot entrée, side dish or dessert. You could sign up to make sandwiches, we make 75 per week. Hygiene items can be donated. A classroom could have a peanut butter drive and collect 16oz. Jars of peanut butter...or hand warmer drive. Right now we are focused on collecting winter weather gear. If you can help in any way, or would like to volunteer, contact Wendy Snow at Thank you! Calendars for Nursing Homes We are collecting 2019 calendars to be delivered to nursing home residents in mid-december. If you would like to donate a 2019 calendar, note pads or stickers, please drop them in the receptacle in the hospitality kitchen in the back of church. We will pick them up weekly. All sizes in every description are appreciated. Devotional candles are kept in the kiosk. If you would like to light one just ask an usher for assistance. There is a slot and envelopes available in the kiosk to place your $5 donation. If you have a suggestion, concern, or comment you would like the Parish Ministry Council to address there are cards on the kiosk for you to fill out and drop in the slot.
