The measure has been taken for many centuries, and in some European dioceses it is possible to measure the level of engagement in worship by the population over the course of many centuries. Long ago, it was also the custom to track "Easter duty" by a statistical report. Penitents would receive a kind of chit at confession, which they would then turn in at their parish church when they received Holy Communion during Easter time. Long ago, of course, Communion was fairly rare in the life of a Catholic Christian, perhaps only once a year. The chits would be tallied by parish priests and reported to the chancery, which in turn would hold on to the records and include the statistics in a report to the Vatican every five years. Nowadays, the October count has proved especially critical in the life of our Church as bishops use the figures to measure the vitality of church life, to sketch parish boundaries, and even to decide when to close, merge, or form new parishes. --Rev. Please consider attending FIRE Ball on Saturday, November 5th at 6 pm at The Arvest Bank Theatre at The Midland. Proceeds from this fun and fabulous fall gala support inclusive Catholic education at 13 area schools. Tickets are $125. Sponsorship opportunities are available too. The best part of the evening was seeing so many school families as well as parishioners together for dinner! We appreciate the support of our teachers and the entire Nativity community. Pack 178 Heifer Project Halloween Carnival The junior high students will be hosting a Halloween Carnival on Friday, October 28th with proceeds going to the Heifer Project. There will be game booths for the children to enjoy. Games cost a dime. Children will receive prizes at all booths. This will take the place of classroom parties. We will need trinkets and candy (please NO peanut or peanut processed products) to use as prizes. If you can help with this, please send to the school office marked Carnival. Praying the Rosary - For the Catholic Church, the month of October is dedicated to our Mother Mary in the form of the Most Holy Rosary. We will be discussing and praying the Rosary as classes, as a school and as a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Join us as a family or in your individual prayers in praying the Rosary during this month. During October the rosary will be recited on Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m. in the church. All are welcome! 6 OCTOBER 9, THE TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The readings today speak of healing and salvation. In Second Kings, Naaman, a commander of the army of the king of Syria, develops leprosy. He goes to a stranger, a prophet from Israel, when no one else can cure his disease. Much to his surprise, after a simple bath in the river, he is cured. In Luke's Gospel, Jesus cures ten lepers and sends them to the priest. Only one, a Samaritan, returns to thank Jesus for his cure and only he hears the words, "Your faith has saved you." The psalm and Timothy remind us that salvation involves justice, kindness, and faithfulness and forever links us with Jesus. In a world as broken as ours, both healing and salvation are necessary. HEALING Leprosy is a disease that does not kill but lingers for years, deforming the body and isolating the sufferer. It has been used in the scriptures to suggest the destructive power of sin and its resulting isolation from the community. Jesus acts in marked contrast to this view when he touches and heals those shunned by their community. The focus of the readings today is not on the disease itself, not on sin, but on the response of two who were healed. Both lepers are outside the community of faith. Naaman is a Syrian and the leper in Luke is a Samaritan. Both are healed and experience the wholeness that healing provides. The relief and gratitude that such healing affords are more than enough, as it was for nine of the ten lepers cured in Luke. But for Naaman and the tenth leper, their healing not only makes them whole, it makes them want more. Naaman wants to take this God home with him and the tenth leper wants to thank the one who gave him life. It makes them want a continued connection to this God who brought them back to life. SALVATION Each of us has known the painful breakdown and isolation that comes with sin, personal and social, individual and community. We have known the pain that lingers for years. And we have known moments of healing, of wholeness restored, the compassionate touch of someone who reminds us that we belong not just to the community but to God. We are not only healed of our brokenness, we are also saved from lives of isolation and misery. We receive that salvation when, like Naaman and the tenth leper, we recognize the source of the grace and mercy, and return to it and take it home with us. So not only are we healed, we become a source of healing and salvation for others in a world where the suffering does not seem to end. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Company In today s gospel, we hear of the ten men afflicted with leprosy, and the one who glorifies God for being healed. It is a dramatic scene of gratitude. But in order for the miracle to happen in the first place, these men had to start walking in faith before their diseased conditions changed one tiny bit. Good stewards of their faith realize that they cannot wait until their problems are over to start walking in faith. They praise God even in the darkest of nights, and in the worst of circumstances. Do we walk in faith, giving the Lord our gratitude even when we are in difficult circumstances? This year we also have a beautiful handmade quilt to raffle off. All proceeds go to benefit our home for the elderly poor. Call for information.
