3 OCTOBER 14, PARISH NEWS Did You Know Next weekend the Ministry Council will be serving cookies after the 4pm mass and donuts after the 8am and 10:30am masses. Also, Cinnamon Buns and Sticky Buns will be available in the kitchen in the school from 8am until sold out. Have a treat after mass and be sure to take home some cinnamon/sticky buns for later. Middle School & High School Mission Trip Fundraiser The middle and high school youth group will be selling live evergreen wreaths for the Christmas season, as well as a few Christmas related decorative items to help offset the cost for summer mission trips. 5 SCHOOL - OCTOBER 14, 2018 TRUNK OR TREAT Saturday, Oct. 27 th : This event is a safe activity for all to enjoy. Cost is $5.00 and bags of candy to hand out to the trick-ortreaters. The parking lot gates will open at 5:30 for people to enter and park and then shut promptly at 6:00 so that our trick-or-treaters can have the opportunity to move safely around the area. The gates will reopen at 7:00, at the conclusion of the event. If we run out of room in the parking lot, families are welcome to bring their lawn chairs and walk up to join the festivities a $5 admission will be charged for this as well. While you're at Truck or Treat be sure to stop by the Student Senate haunted house. This kidfriendly haunted house will be just another way to celebrate Halloween and get more candy! Cost is $1.00 or a food item for the St. Mary s Food Pantry (please NO canned vegetables). All proceeds will go to the St. Mary s Food Pantry. HALLOWEEN PARADE: Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 10:00 am -- Nativity of Mary is walking in the Independence Halloween Parade! The cast of Aladdin will be leading our group, but all are welcome to walk with the Nativity crew! Those who are not in the cast are encouraged to wear Nativity spirit wear and represent our awesome school. More details to come about call time and location. HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31ST The junior high students will be hosting a Halloween Carnival on Wednesday, Oct. 31 st with proceeds going to the Heifer Project. There will be game booths for the children to enjoy. Games cost a dime. Children will receive prizes at all booths. This will take the place of classroom parties. The carnival will begin at 1:30 and end at 2:15. Parents are welcome to attend. We will need trinkets and candy (please NO peanut or peanut processed products) to use as prizes. If you can help us with this, please send to the office marked Carnival. Please continue to recycle your junk mail, office papers, newspapers, etc. Our recycle bins are located in the church parking lot just off of 36th Terrace. Please save pop tabs, boxtops and Best Choice barcodes for our school. You can drop them off at the school or church.

6 OCTOBER 14, THE TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Today is the Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time. It begins a period of reflection on the meaning of "riches" for individuals and communities. We read a love song to the spirit of wisdom. The Psalm and Hebrews both continue this meditation on wisdom and the Word of God. Mark personalizes these reflections by the story of a good man who wants only to move closer to eternal life but finds his way blocked by his own success. He walks away sadly from Jesus. The choice could not be clearer but even a good man, recognized as such by Jesus, finds it impossible to uproot himself from his possessions. The lesson is both about the treasure that is Wisdom, that is eternal life, that is Jesus, and the power of our attachment to things that are not eternal. We must choose again and again which path we will make our own. SPIRIT OF WISDOM The first reading is about wisdom. It is a love poem written to the object of the author's desire. The author loves wisdom itself and experiences wisdom as the source of all good things, all riches. The psalm tells us that wisdom is kindness. It is knowing and doing the work of God. It is understanding what our life is for. Hebrews recognizes that Wisdom is, in fact, the Word of God, Jesus. The source of our continuing life is Jesus. Mark makes this even more personal with the story of one man. A good man who has observed the laws from his youth, even in the loving presence of Jesus, cannot find the strength to leave his worldly possession behind and follow. LETTING GO Who does not strive to be successful? What good person does not want to be able to provide for their family all the necessities of life, to assure that they will have the means to feed, clothe, shelter, educate, and care for themselves and those they love as well as help their neighbors, strangers, the needy? Isn't that what is asked of us, to love God and our neighbor as ourselves? The readings today make clear that even more is required of us. We must do all those things and we must realize that doing so is only the first step to understanding what is at the center our lives. We must realize that our accomplishments are not the measure of our value and worth. However successful or unsuccessful we are, our worth is measured by the truth that Jesus suffered, died, and rose for us. To truly know that, we must let go of everything else that roots us in time, space, and expectation and be willing to follow eternity. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Company TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION They say that it is not so much that Columbus discovered America, but rather that after he arrived, the new world "stayed discovered." The sponsorship of Ferdinand and Isabella assured that the news would flash around Europe with an air of authority that other "discoverers" lacked. One of the oft-mentioned early visitors is Saint Brendan the Navigator, a sixth-century Irish monk who had trouble staying at home. He is said to have sailed to "the Isle of the Blessed" in a leather-bound boat, and to have been away from his monastery for seven years. Upon his return, the stories of adventures to a new land attracted pilgrims to his monastery in the Blasket Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Columbus is said to have referred to The Voyage of Saint Brendan, a very popular adventure in those days. Only after his American journey is Brendan said to have gone to tamer lands to the east, England and Scotland. In 1976, Tim Severin set out on a two-year voyage to America from Ireland in a leather-bound boat, traveling in summer and hopscotching from the Faroes to Iceland to Newfoundland, and encountering along the way exactly what Saint Brendan describes: icebergs, whales, and porpoises. Scholars warn not to dismiss this too quickly: just as the ancient Egyptian monks sought to live in the desert, for the Celtic monks exile in a boat was the Irish equivalent.
