La luz que trae la salvación y regocijo es, fundamentalmente, Cristo. El tema es la liberación: liberación de la ignorancia ( tinieblas ) y también del pecado (el yugo ). Mientras Isaías identifica un lugar, así Pablo describe una actitud: la actitud que crece, incluso entre gente buena, de equiparar su propia voluntad con el bien común. Esto siempre origina desacuerdo, y así ha ocurrido en Corinto. Pablo no permitirá esto; todos somos miembros del partido de Cristo. El Evangelio no es para dividirnos. Mateo cita a Isaías en el Evangelio de hoy, y presenta a Jesús como el cumplimiento de las profecías de Isaías. El tema es Conviértanse, porque ya está cerca el Reino de los Cielos (Mateo 4:17). The light that brings salvation and rejoicing is, ultimately, Christ. Liberation is the theme: liberation from both ignorance ( darkness ) and sin (the yoke ). As Isaiah identifies a place, so Paul describes an attitude: the attitude that develops, even among good people, of equating their own will with the common good. This always brings dissension, and so it has done in Corinth. Paul will not allow this; we are all members of Christ s party. The gospel is not to divide us. Matthew quotes from Isaiah in today s Gospel, presenting Jesus as the fulfillment of Isaiah s prophecies. The theme is Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (Matthew 4:17). 4 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 2017 Archbishop s Appeal: The 2017 Archbishop s Appeal Campaign has begun. The theme for this year is Disciples, Sent by the Spirit. The entire goal this year is $4,500,000. Our parish appeal goals are $10,546 for St. James; $4,219 for Sacred Heart and $1,584 for St. Patrick. This week you will receive a letter from Archbishop Gustavo requesting your participation in the Appeal. Please respond by praying how you and your family can provide a gifts to this year s Appeal. Your gift will provide housing and basic necessities for the homeless, education and spiritual formation for seminarians and deacons, and evangelization and education initiatives for youth, young adults and families in our Archdiocese. Your gift can be made by filling out the pledge card sent to your home, or here at church. Once completed, place your Appeal pledge card in the offertory during Mass. Gifts can also be made online at or over the phone with the Appeal Office at Thank you for your generosity Family Retreat: With this bulletin, you will receive a registration form for our 2017 Family Retreat. Our theme, Your Holy Family, was inspired by Pope Francis latest document on Family Life, in which he describes the family as the domestic church, where we first learn the faith and express it through our family prayer. Our retreat will incorporate both serious moments and plenty of fun activities, all meant to help understand our vocation to be Family. Thanks to the HEB Foundation Camp, we are able to make the retreat very affordable for all, and hope to take at least 200 people! Please note the deadline for registration - Sunday February 5. We must cut off registration by this date to adequately plan such things as food quantities, cabin assignments, etc. As we prepare for the retreat, we invite you to pray this prayer written by our Holy Father, and found at the conclusion of his letter Amoris Latitia - the Joy of Loving : Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division; may all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth, make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Graciously hear our prayer. Amen. New Processional Cross: Thanks to Marvin and Lillian Bart for the donation of a new processional cross for use at St. James, replacing the old tarnished one that had served for many years. Thank you! Archdiocesan Youth Spectacular: Saturday, Feb. 4, at St. Mary s University in San Antonio. For Middle- and High-School youth. $20 fee; you pay $10; our Youth acct. picks up the rest. We will take the bus from the St. James Parking Lot at 6:30 am; to return by 7:30 pm. Let s fill the bus! First Eucharist Parent/Child Retreat: This afternoon, Jan. 22; 1-5 pm. All children preparing to receive our Lord for the first time in Holy Eucharist, and their parents, must attend. We have some special things in store for our children this year. El tema para este año es Discípulos, Enviados por el Espíritu. La meta entera para este año es $4,500,000. Retiro Familiar 2017: Con este boletín, recibirán una forma de solicitud para el Retiro Familiar El tema de este año, Tu Familia Sagrada, fue inspirado por el documento reciente del Papa Francisco sobre la Vida Familiar, en que él describe la familia como la Iglesia Doméstica, donde aprendemos por primera vez la fe, y la ponemos en práctica por la oración familiar. En el retiro, habrá momentos muy serios, mixtado con tiempos de diversión, entendidos a facilitar entendimiento de la vocación que tiene la familia. Gracias a HEB, podemos ofrecer esta experiencia por un precio minimo pata todos, y esperamos en llevar al menos 200 personas. Favor de notar el fin de plazo para registrar - domingo feb. 5.
