1 Welcome to the Parish of the Resurrection. If you are new to the parish or worshipping with us for the first time then please do make yourself known to either a member of the clergy or a churchwarden. We are a welcoming church family spread throughout the town of Alton, Holybourne and Beech and our aim is to offer worship which deepens our faith, common life and our relationship with Jesus Christ. This information sheet gives some words that will be needed in today s services and notices about the life of our church communities. Please take it home with you. 2 Dear Reader Wow! We had an absolutely fantastic turn out of people for the first session of our Lent Course. The Galilee Chapel in St Lawrence Church was packed as we looked at the big picture overview of Matthew s Gospel. There is still room for more so please do think about coming along this coming Wednesday evening when Joy Windsor and Lisa Bewick will help us with The Sermon on the Mount from Matthew Chapters 5-7. The evening starts with refreshments at 7.30pm. Another two reminders. First the Eternal Light concert by the Holybourne Singers on Saturday 18th March, 7.30pm in St Lawrence Church. This is going to be a really good musical evening and it raises money for The Living Space Project in The Church of the Holy Rood, Holybourne. Tickets available from The Newbury Building Society and in our churches. Second - Mothering Sunday is Sunday 26th March and we are holding a GAP United Service in All Saints Church at 10.30am. Everyone welcome. It is always good when we join together from across the parish and with our friends from Alton Methodist Church. There will be 8am services and a Songs of Praise at St Peter s at 4pm as well. Best wishes Andrew Mission for December until February is Compassion UK. Please look out for information about this charity on the mission notice boards in Church. Please use a Mission Gift Aid Envelopes if you area tax payer. Please remember to support our local food bank. Don t come to church empty handed All donations to be placed in the Foodbank basket in church. The Parish is reliant on the generosity of its worshipping community for all of our ministry and mission. We are grateful to those who contribute financially. 4 Praying in March 2017 For the discipline of Lent. Pray that we would all take steps to listen to God, centre our lives on the example of Jesus and be led by the gifts of The Holy Spirit. We pray for our Lent course Blessed are you meeting on Wednesday evenings and for our Lent Lunches on Wednesday lunchtimes that they will be times of learning and fellowship. For Andrews Endowed Church of England Primary School, Holybourne. For all the pupils, the staff and Headteacher Maria Lloyd, the governors and their links with the Parish. Particularly for the Y groups - children meeting with Chris Bradish asking questions about faith and life. For St Lawrence CE Primary School, giving thanks to God for their recent successful OFSTED report. For the Diocese of Winchester - for the School of Mission and its work with training and resourcing clergy, LLMs and those who are in training for licensed ministry. For the Alton Foodbank and its many volunteers who provide essential food and goods to those who in need in our town. We pray for John Jacobs as he leads and co-ordinates this valuable ministry on behalf of our local churches. We pray for Alton Methodist Church and the appointment of Revd Philip Simpkins as the new minister. He begins this appointment in September in the meantime we pray for his ministry in Keynsham and for the family's preparations to move here. On the 1st Sunday of the month we now gather for a time of Parish Prayer a place for space in St Lawrence Church, 6.30pm. A short reflective time to pray for our parish, our community and the world. 4

5 The call to prayer is in three simple ways Daily, weekly, monthly Every day there is a prayer for the beginning of the day, for the middle of the day and for the end of the day. Please find a suitable time to use these prayers which are printed here. There will be a monthly gathering Parish Time with God in one of the churches. For the beginning of the day - The Community Prayer Living God, you have called us to be the Body of Christ. May our parish be a sign of hope in our community of Holybourne, Beech and Alton. May all we do, and all we are becoming, bring praise to your name and draw others to your love. We ask these things in the name of Jesus, who came to serve and bring us fullness of life. Amen. For the middle of the day - The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. This will be a new way of engaging with the community within the Winchester Diocese of providing a range of community benefits from outside the confines of the Church buildings. It will principally extend the successful monthly furniture sales meeting a much needed service to the community. It will give opportunities for hard to employ adults to work, have a Drop in Centre, POTR information area and hopefully it will provide funds for example for the School s Minister and Church maintenance. The shop will be run by a part time Manager with we hope volunteers, more details will be in April Sunrise. There are currently four Trustees Derek Gurney; Lisa Hillan; Robin Lees and Clive Muller. We need two additional voluntary Trustees, one with business and the other with retail skills. If you would like to volunteer or know someone not connected to the POTR we would like to hear from you. Once the Shop has been set up hopefully from early May this year the Board of Trustees will hold bi-monthly meetings. Please contact Robin Lees , Derek Gurney

7 Notice Epoulbas Dinner and Dance Regrettably we have decided to postpone the dinner and dance planned for 8th April until the autumn. There is so much going on in parish and we haven't had any enquiries yet. We are looking at early-mid October. Watch this space. David and the Epoulbas team. How are you celebrating Lent? If you don't read the Bible regularly Lent is a good time to give it a go. An easy way to start is to follow the gospel readings printed on the Parish Matters each week. Lent Lunches please come along for some homemade soup on Wednesdays from 12.30pm in Holy Rood church. Donations are in aid of Karamoja. 'Blessed are you...' We shall be looking at themes in Matthew's Gospel from 7.30pm -9.00pm on Wednesdays 15th, 22nd, 29th March and 5th April. Fundraising Concert for the Living Space Project Holybourne Singers Chamber Choir in partnership with Alton College - are putting on an innovative Concert in aid of the Living Space Project at the Church of the Holy Rood. The music includes Howard Goodall s moving Requiem, perhaps his most popular choral composition, which will have dance images by students from the Performing Arts Department at Alton College. The Programme also features the beautiful Faure Requiem and one of Bruckner s most well-known motets.tickets priced at 10 are available from the Newbury Building Society, Alton or by via potr.alton@btinternet.com. They are also available in each Church on a Sunday. Under 12s are free and student tickets are available at 5. If you can t come, do pass on this information to others who might be interested. Resurrection Furniture Manager for new shop Great opportunity to set up a social enterprise for our new Alton charity. 8 Volunteers Needed Transport to services We have several new requests for a lift to the 10.30am service at St. Lawrence. They are people coming from Fielders court, Lime avenue, New Barn lane and one possible monthly from The Lawn in Holybourne. One or two of these need to bring their walkers.
