I have had many positive experiences which have been much appreciated and thank you most sincerely for your help, assistance and commitment to the parish. After careful and personal discernment, and in consultation with the Archdiocese, I wish to inform you that my ministry as Parish Priest for the Catholic Parish of Ivanhoe will finish Friday 15 July, after which I will commence my ministry as Parish Priest at St Andrew s Church, Clayton South. Fr Paul Newton has been appointed as Parish Administrator from 15 July - 25 November As from 25 November 2016 Fr Bill Edebohls has been appointed as Parish Priest. I wish the parish, priests and its parishioners well in the future and will keep you in my prayers. Clergy Conference: I will be attending the Clergy Conference next week 27 June - 1 July. Communion Services will be held on weekdays and I thank all who provide these services for parishioners. - Fr Jacob From The Pastoral Leadership Team - Ford St: As you will remember in late 2015, the Parish reached an agreement with Villa Maria Catholic Homes to sell the site of the former St Bernadette s Tennis Club for a very pleasing amount of over $3.7million. These monies were received by the Parish on Christmas Eve. They have been invested in a variety of term accounts to meet the future cost of implementing the Parish Masterplan. Villa Maria Catholic Homes have gone to tender for the construction of 23 units and are currently engaged in extensive soil testing pre-construction. Work is well underway on the sales office. You will be kept informed of progress. - Chris Dixon, PLT Chairperson Leaving Collections for Aid for Fiji : This weekend there will be leaving collections at each church after Mass. This project has been the initiative of Finlay, a student at one of our parish schools, and his family, who wish to raise funds to help Fijian children after recent events of Cyclone Winston. Just one day a week or more - would suit a retired tradesman or any handyman. Tools are available. If you are interested and able to assist contact Sr. Jane Gorey for further information.

3 NOTICEBOARD Project: Aid for Fiji Why the project to help? Cyclone Winston has just been through Fiji and has blown away every thing. Fiji is not as a wealthy country as Australia. The Fijian government is quiet poor. Anyone who has been to Fiji will agree that it is a lovely country, but this beautiful country has been destroyed by nature. A village in Taveuni blown away!!! But there is always someone always watching over them. What is the aim? To raise money to donate to Taveuni (a island in Fiji) and help the Fijian children get back to their normal life of playing rugby and netball with their friends, while the adults help get every ones life back to normal. What will we do to raise money? I was thinking that maybe we could have something like a project compassion box that we could make. To try something new instead of having a free dress day and bringing a gold coin donation. We could designate a day were we learn about Fiji and their traditions. What will the money be used for? To maybe buy sporting equipment like rugby and netballs to give to the schools. We could have each class write their first name on a ball and then we could send them to the schools and we might even get a response. How will we get the aid to Fiji? I have currently contacted Rotary to see if they can bring the items over to Fiji, because if we send them over then the Taveuni government will have to pay for the items to get delivered, so it will be sort of pointless. How will we get feedback? We could give each class a ball and then get the kids in that class to write their first name on the ball to hopefully get some sort of pen pal thing going so the children feel that even though that they have lost every thing they have got something interesting to look forward to. Imagine if this was our school - Any help would be welcomed. Thank you - Finlay First Collection Thanksgiving: Envelopes: $1, Loose cash: $ Total: $1, Special Collections: Chaplaincy Appeal: $ & Catholic Missions: $1, (includes Credit Cards)

5 THE CATHOLIC PARISH OF IVANHOE 13 th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: YEAR C No June 2016 Entrance Antiphon: Ps 46: 2 All peoples, clap your hands. Cry to God with shouts of joy! First Reading: 1 Kings 19:16, The Lord said to Elijah: Go, you are to anoint Elisha son of Shaphat, of Abel Meholah, as prophet to succeed you. Leaving there, Elijah came on Elisha son of Shaphat as he was ploughing behind twelve yoke of oxen, he himself being with the twelfth. Elijah passed near to him and threw his cloak over him. Elisha left his oxen and ran after Elijah. Let me kiss my father and mother, then I will follow you he said. Elijah answered, Go, go back; for have I done anything to you? Elisha turned away, took the pair of oxen and slaughtered them. He used the plough for cooking the oxen, then gave to his men, who ate. He then rose, and followed Elijah and became his servant. This the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God Responsorial Psalm: Ps 15:1-2, 5, 7-11 (R.) You are my inheritance, O Lord. 1. Preserve me, God, I take refuge in you. I say to the Lord: You are my God. O Lord, it is you who are my portion and cup; it is you yourself who are my prize. (R.) 2. I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel, who even at night directs my heart. I keep the Lord ever in my sight: since he is at my right hand, I shall stand firm. (R.) 3. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad; even my body shall rest in safety. For you will not leave my soul among the dead, nor let your beloved know decay. (R.) 4. You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand happiness for ever. (R.) Second Reading: Gal 5:1, When Christ freed us, he meant us to remain free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery. My brothers, you were called, as you know, to liberty; but be careful, or this liberty will provide an opening for self-indulgence. Serve one another, rather, in works of love, since the whole of the Law is summarised in a single command: Love your neighbour as yourself. If you go snapping at each other and tearing each other to pieces, you had better watch or you will destroy the whole community. Let me put it like this: if you are guided by the Spirit you will be in no danger of yielding to selfindulgence, since self-indulgence is the opposite of the Spirit, the Spirit is totally against such a thing, and it is precisely because the two are so opposed that you do not always carry out your good intentions. If you are led by the Spirit, no law can touch you. The Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia, alleluia! Speak, O Lord, your servant is listening; you have the words of everlasting life. Alleluia! Gospel: Luke 9:18-24 Jesus resolutely set his face towards Jerusalem. I will follow you wherever you will go. As the time drew near for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely took the road for Jerusalem and sent messengers ahead of him. These set out, and they went into a Samaritan village to make preparations for him, but the people would not receive him because he was making for Jerusalem. Seeing this, the disciples James and John said, Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to burn them up? But he turned and rebuked them, and they went off to another village. As they travelled along they met a man on the road who said to him, I will follow you wherever you go. Jesus answered, Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head. Another to whom he said, Follow me, replied, Let me go and bury my father first. But he answered, Leave the dead to bury their dead; your duty is to go and spread the news of the kingdom of God. Another said, I will follow you, sir, but first let me go and say goodbye to my people at home. Jesus said to him, Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom of God. The Gospel of the Lord: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ Prayers of the Faithful: Lord, show us the path of life: Hear our prayer. Communion Antiphon: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all within me, his holy name. 14 th Sunday in Ordinary Time 1st Reading: Isaiah 66: Resp. Psalm: 65:1-7, 16, 20 2nd Reading: Galatians 6:14-18 Gospel: Luke 10:1-12, 17-20

6 DID YOU KNOW Gospel Reflection This passage marks a turning point in the gospel of Luke. It is the commencement of Jesus journey towards Jerusalem and we are told that he resolutely takes that road (or in some translations, he resolutely sets his face towards Jerusalem). Earlier in this chapter, we have heard Peter s confession of faith, seen the Transfiguration and heard Jesus predict his death. Today s passage begins the second half of the gospel of Luke and it is clear from this point forward that there is no turning back for Jesus. This passage is a difficult one on first reading; the second half of it seems to paint a picture of an unsympathetic and uncompromising Jesus. However, in the light of its positioning as the beginning of the second half of the gospel the beginning of the end it takes on more significance. Firstly, the incident of rejection in Samaria allows Jesus to make very clear that he will never resort to violence as a solution to any problem. The reaction of the disciples seems a bit extreme as a response to an inhospitable action! Jesus rebuke to them reminds us that what he has offered all along is an invitation that was open to all if some don t accept the invitation you can t call fire down on them from above! The three vignettes make plain the urgency and demanding nature of Jesus mission. He and his followers are constantly on the move and have no room for comforts and cosy beds. The second and third pieces contrast directly with the story from today s first reading. The message of Jesus is that the work of the Kingdom is even more important than duty to family and duty to the dead. Once he has set his face towards Jerusalem and his own death, there is no turning back he is absolutely committed to his mission. Scriptural context Hard sayings Today s gospel can be seen as falling into a category of gospel passages that are often referred to as the hard sayings of Jesus. These hard sayings are often confronting and even offensive to the audience particularly a modern one. The harshness of the language and sentiment seems to jar with our image of the compassionate Jesus. Yet, these challenging teachings remind us of the hard edge that is contained within Christian beliefs and teachings. They call for strength in the face of overwhelming odds and commitment even in the face of custom and family loyalties. Historical Context Q The three short sayings that make up the second half of today s gospel also appear in the gospel of Matthew and in the non-canonical gospel of Thomas. All three of these texts used a collection of sayings of Jesus as a source for their writing. This source is known simply by the German word for source, Quelle, or more commonly by the letter Q. The existence of the sayings gospel of Q has been deduced by use of source criticism, which seeks to better understand a text by understanding the sources used in its construction. Have you thought? No looking back Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom of God. This seemingly uncompromising position by Jesus is a call to set our eyes clearly on the establishment of the Kingdom. If we look back if we have doubts and want to return to the world of comfort and injustice then we are not yet ready for the difficulties of bringing about the Kingdom of God. It reminds us that although God invites us all to enter into the Kingdom, we have to make ourselves ready in our own hearts and minds to want to be part of the Kingdom. Questions for Adults Q. What was your immediate reaction to hearing/reading today s gospel? Q. Why might the gospel writer have incorporated these difficult sayings of Jesus? Q. How do you think the three would-be followers reacted to Jesus words? Q. Why might Jesus have felt such urgency about the Kingdom? Q. When have you ever felt a similar passion, commitment and urgency? Greg Sunter Liturgy Help.com.au
