How would like to continue to encounter God? 1

2 Encountering God through. Receiving the Sacraments Participating in the Liturgy of the Mass Reading and reflecting on Scriptures Prayer Church ministry: Service Mission & Ministry "Ministry" means "Service We are asked to imitate Jesus, who said that he had come to serve (Mk 10:45) Christian ministry (service) is not an option. By Baptism and Confirmation, we were all called to some form of ministry (Mt 25:31-26, 28:16-20) The Holy Spirit has given each of us special gifts to minister with others. 1 Kings 19:19-21 (Our Response To Christ s Call) 19 So he [Elija] set out from there, and found Elisha son of Shaphat, who was ploughing. There were twelve yoke of oxen ahead of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle over him. 20 He left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you. Then Elijah said to him, Go back again; for what have I done to you? 21 He returned from following him, took the yoke of oxen, and slaughtered them; using the equipment from the oxen, he boiled their flesh, and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out and followed Elijah, and became his servant. Luke 9:59-62 (Our Response To Christ s Call) 59 To another he said, Follow me. But he said, Lord, first let me go and bury my father. 60 But Jesus said to him, Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God. 61 Another said, I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home. 62 Jesus said to him, No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God. 3 Finding Your Ministry Post-RCIA Activities CAFE: weekly talks, small group discussion Catholic Faith Renewal Talk (1st Fri each month): prayer & praise, teaching, mass, supper Post-RCIA Bible Study Start new group e.g. Bible Sharing Parish Group Presentations Discernment How Do We Discern God s Will? Hearing vs Listening You can hear but not understand Story: A Friend In A Crowded Room Listening requires a response Job vs Ministry Some people have a JOB in the church; others involve themselves in a MINISTRY. What is the difference? If you are doing it just because no else will, it s a JOB. If you are doing it to serve the Lord, it s a Ministry. If you quit because somebody criticised you, it was a JOB. If you keep on serving, it s a MINISTRY. If you ll do it only as it does not interfere with your other activities, it s a JOB. If you are committed to staying with it even when it means letting go of other things, it s a MINISTRY. If you quit because no one praised you or thanked you, it was a JOB. If you stay with it even though nobody recognises your efforts, it is a MINISTRY. Job vs Ministry It s hard to get excited about a JOB. It s almost impossible not be excited about a MINISTRY. If our concern is success, it s a JOB. If our concern is faithfulness, it s a MINISTRY. An average church is filled with people doing JOBs. A great and growing church is filled with people involved in MINISTRY. Where do we fit in? What about us? If God calls you to a MINISTRY, don t treat it like a JOB. If you have a JOB, give it up and find a MINISTRY. God does not want us feeling stuck with a JOB, but excited and faithful to Him in a MINISTRY. 3

4 Where Are You Leading Me To, Lord? We usually don t know Sometimes the Destination is not important Tea Break It s the Journey that is important. Trust the Lord Parish Member Sharing Why Evangelise? Good News is not something we can keep to ourselves. E.g. new baby, job promotion Every baptised person is tasked by the Lord to evangelise. We are called to be so on fire with God's love that it becomes impossible for us to keep it to ourselves If I say, I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name, then within me there is something like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot. (Jeremiah 20:9) 4

5 This is the Gospel as proclaimed by John Paul II. You may be the only Gospel a non-believer will ever read. What would your Gospel be like? Preach the Gospel always, if necessary, use words. Q&A St Francis of Assisi Missioning Mass & Shared Meal Further Readings (TBA) 20 May 2018 (Sun) am am (Mass) am 1.30 pm (Meal) Families and friends welcome Bring a plate, enough for you and your company.
