HELEN CHURCH RIVERSIDE, OHIO MARCH 13, 2016 CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES OPERATION RICE BOWL This week, CRS Rice Bowl invites us to enter into solidarity with the people of the island nation of Madagascar, where we are reminded of the important role farmers play in caring for God s creation. We are encouraged to reflect of the Catholic social teaching principle, Care for Creation, where we are reminded to take care of all creation for ourselves and all of our human family. Let us reflect this week on where our food comes from and what role we can play in caring for our environment. Please be welcome to take a palm from the basket outside when you arrive. If you are not close enough to get one, Eucharistic Ministers will be on had to distribute them after they have been blessed. You can also take one from the basket as you pass by on the procession into church. If you are not able to join us outside, know that Eucharistic Ministers will bring some into to church for you after they have been blessed. In the event of rain, wind, or temperatures that are too cold, palms will be at the doors and a modified procession will take place from the baptismal font. Everyone who wishes to participate will be invited back to the font at the appropriate time. Our Holy Week Journey is one week away! OUR HOLY THURSDAY COLLECTION WILL BENEFIT WOMEN S PRISON MINISTRY AT DCI The AiA Ministry at the Dayton Correctional Institution will be the beneficiary of our Holy Thursday collection. Your contributions will be donated to help cover the purchase of the binder of materials inmates use during the week-long ministry and at the monthly follow-up sessions. These workbooks are expensive but invaluable to the growth of those committed to personal growth! Thank you for whatever you are able to share with the women, especially during this month dedicated to supporting those in prison. Our featured Spiritual Work of Mercy for March is Admonish the sinner. Consider: Read the examination of conscience at least once a week. Correct where necessary. Discuss ways you can truly forgive someone. As a family, create a wanted poster for a good family member, friend, or teammate. More than ever before fair trade practices have become increasingly important when purchasing palms for Palm Sunday Mass. One palm variety, the Chamaedorea, has been plagued by aggressive harvesting, resulting in a depletion of rain forests in Mexico and Central America. Our supplier s palms are grown in South Texas, are native to the area, and are harvested with a focus on protecting the environment (leaves harvested from mature trees only, harvested once a year; in addition our supplier has set aside over 300 acres of permanent nature reserve). Our palm supplier s workers in South Texas are treated with dignity and paid fair wages. Challenge: when you get your palm on Palm Sunday, say a prayer for the growers and harvesters.

4 FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT HOLY WEEK: A WEEK OF PROCESSIONS In our Catholic tradition, processions allow us to walk together with God on the pilgrimage of life. The Dictionary of the Liturgy by Rev. Jovian P. Lang, OFM (Catholic Book Publishing Co., New York, 1989) states that processional rites have their foundation in the religious instincts of human beings. Processions translate marvelously the ordered, calm, trusting, and joyous life, the need of collective prayer, and the joy in the triumph of our Savior. Liturgy employs all the arts for the glory of God and so could not leave out the art of movement, dignified and measured choreography, which appeals to all parts of the human body. Funeral Procession by artist Ellis Wilson On Palm Sunday, weather permitting, we will gather outside the church, and, in memory of Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem, we will all process up the center aisle with our palms, reverence the altar with a bow, cross the front of the church, and move down the side aisles to our seats. All of these movements and gestures are part of our dignified and measured choreography in praise of our Lord! Please join us in this procession if you are physically able. How powerful it is when we share experiences in the Body of Christ!

5 ST. HELEN CHURCH RIVERSIDE, OHIO MARCH 6, 2016 ST. JOSEPH S TABLE On March 19, we celebrate the Solemnity of St. Joseph, Husband of Mary. St. Joseph dedicated his life to the care of the Blessed Virgin and Jesus. To honor him, there is a classic Catholic tradition we know as St. Joseph s Table where food is set aside for the poor. In honor of St. Joseph, you are invited to bring a non-perishable food item to Mass on the Weekend after his Solemnity, March This year s collection will benefit the Feed the Spirit ministry. This ministry provides specific items used to feed hungry children in the surrounding communities of Riverside, Dayton and Beavercreek. So this Lent, as part of your almsgiving, please consider St. Joseph and the Feed the Spirit ministry s work with hungry children in our community and bring a donation on March 19 or 20. You may also place your donation by the statue of St. Joseph in the Holy Family Chapel anytime during the week prior to the Feast Day and the Mass. Here are some of the needed items: -Breakfast foods in individual bags or containers (oatmeal, cream of wheat, breakfast bars, pop tarts, cereal cups). - Individual packs of snacks (raisins, crackers, pretzels, goldfish). - Fruit or Vegetable individual cans (pop top) or cups (easy open) or applesauce. - Shelf stable white milk in single serve (small) cartons. - Easy open individual meals (must have pop top if a can) i.e. pasta meals in cups, mac-ncheese in cups, cup-o-soup, any soup can with pop top, ramen in cups, and small jars of peanut butter. Always a fun evening, we will feature a catered dinner and a financial update on the state of our Credit Union. DAY OF MERCY Immerse yourself in the Father s mercy. Spend some time with God and with the Missionaries of the Precious Blood at beautiful, peaceful St. Joseph Church in downtown Dayton during a Day of Mercy on Tuesday, March 15. From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on that day, the sacrament of reconciliation will be available in the church, except during Mass at noon. Precious Blood brothers and sisters will also be on hand to act as spiritual mentors or talk with people who are dealing with difficult issues, more than can be addressed in the confessional. There will also be Eucharistic Adoration. All are welcome at the Day of Mercy, which will be repeated at Precious Blood Church on July 1, the Feast of the Precious Blood. CARROLL HIGH SCHOOL S STAGE IS GOING BAT CRAZY FOR THE ADDAMS FAMILY Carroll High School Freedom Players will perform the musical The Addams Family on March 18th, 19th, and 20th. This spooky, yet comic musical brings the Beineke family, your average Ohio family of three, into the unusual world of the Addams family. The Addams are not what you would call normal by any means. These two families are brought together through their teenage children, Wednesday Addams and Lucas Beineke, two kids madly in love. The audience will enjoy watching two very different marriages coming to the realization of their relationships, a jealous little brother, and many strange and overbearing relatives; some alive and some not so much. Watch as the two families dispute, squabble, and in the end learn from each other. Tickets can be purchased online, at the school office, or at the door. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens. Children 5 and under are free. Concessions will be available before the play and during intermission. Friday March 18th at 8 pm, Saturday March 19th at 8pm, and Sunday March 20th at 2pm. LAY PASTORAL MINISTRY PROGRAM The program is sponsored by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and helps lay Catholics grow in faith, knowledge and skills needed for evangelization, catechesis and service. Since 1975, the LPMP has helped ordinary Catholics accomplish extraordinary things in the name of Christ. Saturday classes, flexible formation components and a supportive environment help busy adults fit theological and pastoral studies into work and family commitments. A parents meeting will be held in the Carroll High School cafeteria at 5:30pm on Thursday March 17 th. Practice will begin Monday March 21 st at 5:30pm at the Carroll High School Track. LENTEN PROGRAM ON MERCY AT BERGAMO The Bergamo Center for Lifelong Learning is offering a Jubilee of Mercy gathering The Prodigal Son and the Corporal Works of Mercy on Weds, March 16, 7:00 to 9:00pm, in the Mary, Mother of Mercy Chapel at the Bergamo Center (free will offering).
