6 Tickets for all Minster Community events are available either from the Minster Community Table in the Chapter House Vestibule following the 10 am Sunday Eucharist, or from the Box Office at Church House: or The First Sunday of the Month at Following careful deliberations in recent months, Chapter has taken a decision to make an alteration to the pattern of worship on the first Sunday of the month. With effect from Advent Sunday this year, the BCP Solemn Eucharist (held monthly at 11.30am on the first Sunday) will be replaced by BCP Choral Matins. This will mean, therefore, that the pattern of Sunday worship will be the same every week: 8.00 Holy Communion (BCP) Sung Eucharist (Common Worship: Order One) Choral Matins (BCP) 4.00 Choral Evensong (BCP) The balance between traditional and modern language services will remain the same, with 3 of the 4 Sunday services continuing to use the Book of Common Prayer, but there will now be a consistent pattern of 2 Eucharists and 2 Choral Offices each Sunday. As it stands, the current monthly BCP Eucharist sits rather uneasily within the Minster s overall pattern of worship. The BCP Solemn rite is not one we use at any other time; all other Solemn Eucharists (on Feast Days and Holy Days) have used Common Worship Order One consistently since It is also felt that we should have a more even balance of Eucharistic celebrations and choral offices each Sunday, rather than three successive Eucharistic celebrations on one Sunday (two of them choral) and reducing Matins on those occasions to a said service at The inclusion of a fourth Choral Matins each month will mean that the choir will be able to explore and maintain a wider repertoire of music canticle settings in particular. The mass settings currently sung at are already part of the Eucharistic repertoire and will be maintained at the service and at the 5.15 Solemn celebrations on Feast Days. The BCP Solemn Eucharist will take place on Sunday 5 October and Sunday 2 November, with the new pattern coming into effect from Advent Sunday. Peter Moger, Precentor Adult Learning Programme 2014/2015 The brochure for the Adult Learning Programme 2014/2015 is available (free of charge) today. This is the first time - certainly in recent memory - that we have been able to put together such a programme for a whole year. There are lots of exciting, interesting and different events and opportunities in this programme, ranging from Collections Unlocked an innovative inter-active approach to learning through the exploration of objects in our Historic Collections to a Lent Course based on films; a partnership event with City Screen commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day showing The Boy in Striped Pyjamas, followed by a public conversation with the Director of the film; lectures on science and religion, and much more. The first of these events took place on 30 September with Around the World in 80 Minutes, the first of the Collections Unlocked series. However on 8 and 15 October, comes two sessions on Mark s Gospel the Gospel from which Sunday readings will come in the next liturgical year beginning on Advent Sunday given by Chris Collingwood. Nearly all of the events are free but tickets are required for all events so that we can gauge how many people will be attending each event. Further details are available in the brochure. Please take a brochure for yourself and for anyone else you think might be interested. For further information please contact Chris Collingwood [christopherc@yorkminster.org].
7 Zen Group The Zen group meets on alternate Fridays from 7.30 to 9.00pm in the Old Palace, next meeting on Friday 10 October All are welcome to attend. For further information please contact Chris Collingwood Exploring Christianity I am planning to run another course for adults who would like to explore the Christian faith. This course will run on Tuesday evenings from 7 October until 2 December. The course is suitable for adults who would like to consider being Confirmed and for those already Confirmed who would like to look again at the foundations of our faith. Meetings will begin at 7pm and finish at 8.30pm in the Old Palace. The service of Confirmation will take place on Sunday 23 November 2014 at 10am here at the Minster. Please let me know if you would be interested in joining this group by speaking to me or ing me at michaels@yorkminster.org. I am running a similar course this autumn for youngsters at the Minster school leading up to our Confirmation service in November. I will be running an Exploring Christianity course for youngsters (11-13year olds) who do not attend the Minster school after Christmas those attending this course will have the opportunity to be Confirmed on Easter Eve (4 April 2015). A Course on the Lord s Prayer I am planning to run a six week Pilgrim Course on the Lord s Prayer this autumn. In the past I have run these courses in the evenings but this time I thought I would run it on an afternoon as this may enable some people who could not come in the evenings to attend. This course will run on Monday afternoons from 1.45pm 3.15pm starting on Monday 6 October. I am hoping that along with those who do not like to venture out in the evening this course may interest parents who do not go out to work and have children at school. If you are interested in joining this group please let me know at michaelds@yorkminster.org. When I know how many people are interested in this course I will work out an appropriate venue. Canon Michael. The Minster Sound System As many of you will be aware we experience continual challenges with the Minster sound system. One of the most frequent complaints is that there are certain areas of the Nave where the spoken word is unintelligible. To help us move forward, if you experience such a problem please tell a verger and let them know exactly where you were seated (both the row and the seat), and at which point in the service the sound was poor. We will then be able to chart any particular pattern forming. Many thanks, Alex Carberry, Head Verger Course on the New Testament York School of Ministry is running a course entitled Studying the New Testament for 12 weeks this autumn. The course runs on Wednesday evenings in Middlesbrough and Beverley and on Thursday evening in York at York St John University. This will be of particular interest for those wishing to extend their biblical knowledge and those who may be considering developing their Christian ministry through becoming a Reader or exploring ordination. For more information please contact Lynn Comer, Director York School of Ministry lynn.comer@yorkdiocese.org or Wendy Shaw YSOM administrator ysom@yorkdiocese.org Signs of healing: seeking inspiration in John s gospel. There will be a study afternoon exploring the use of creative writing to gain new insights into Scripture on Saturday 4 October 2014, 1.30 pm 4.30 pm in the Old Palace, Dean s Park, York. The study afternoon is being led by Canon Michael Smith. During the afternoon we will look at three stories of healing from John s gospel and hear three stories I have written in response to the bible passages. There will be some space in the afternoon to think and chat about other stories that may arise from the passages we will be exploring. These are the three passages we will be looking at and the title of the three stories I have written. If you are going to come along, you may like to read the bible passages in preparation for the afternoon.
8 1. John Chapter 5 verses 2 18 The healing of the man at the Pool of Bethzatha Accompanying story A politically incorrect question. 2. Middlesbrough Food Bank Harvest Appeal We are very grateful for the generous gifts of food and money that people have given in previous collections. As part of our Harvest Thanksgiving, we are arranging a food collection for the Middlesbrough Food Bank on Sundays 28 September, 5 and 12 October. The need for food is increasing in Middlesbrough and over the past two years 7,000 food parcels have been given to people in need. Food particularly needed includes: fruit juice, sugar, tinned cooked meat, tuna, tinned fruit, tinned vegetables, biscuits. The Food Bank has just received funding to hold a cookery course, which will be starting after the October half term. Each family will receive two cookery sessions, a slow cooker and a bag of stock cupboard
9 ingredients, These include: beef & vegetable stock cubes, dried mixed herbs and spices, flour, tomato purée, kidney beans, cannellini or mixed beans, vegetable oil. If some of these store cupboard items (especially the stock cubes, mixed herbs and tomato purée) could be provided through the Minster food collection, that would be most helpful. Tables will be placed at the west end of the Minster on each Sunday. Delivery to Middlesbrough will be on the following Tuesday in each case. (Tuesday 30 September, 7 and 14 October). We will be very grateful for any driver who can help us with delivery of the food to Middlesbrough to contact us as below.
