There are gifts to buy, food to prepare, cards to send, decorations to complete, parties to plan and attend, and on and on. The season of Advent is a time of preparation. But too often we get busy preparing only for the things of this world. As I write this, earlier in the day I had been to the hospital to visit two friends. One was in pretty good spirits as the tests conducted, since being drove to the hospital by an adult son earlier in the day, were all good. There was still a few more tests which would require an overnight stay, but things sounded good. Other adult children had been stopping in throughout the day but when I arrived, all the visitors had left. So, we had plenty of time to have a very good visit. This friend anticipated being home the next day, to return to helping others. The other friend expected to be home within a day or two also. But knew, it was temporary. After several months of tests and treatments, the tumor had grown instead of shrinking, so would be heading home on hospice care. As I visited with this friend and the family gathered around, it had a sense of being in a desert. While this desert included a sense of sadness, it also included a sense of peace and hope. As I continue to visit this friend, I will be praying intently for the intercession of Nicholas Black Elk for a miracle to cure my friend. I invite you to also pray intentionally for Black Elk s intercession for a miracle cure for my friend. Are you taking time during this season of advent, to truly prepare for the coming of Jesus? Take some time to escape from the busyness and go to a desert, a quiet place, to reflect on what God is asking of you? Is it maybe to spend more time helping others like my friend? Is God calling you to develop a deeper prayer life, like Saint Paul in the second reading, perhaps by praying for the intercession of Nicholas Black Elk for a miracle to cure my other friend? Maybe God is inviting you to a deeper relationship, by encountering Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of Confession. And perhaps, God is calling you to invite someone back to the Church and out of their desert. However God is calling you this Advent season, listen for his voice and respond to this call. Spend time this advent preparing for the coming of Jesus Christ at Christmas, and when you meet him at the end of your life. Deacon Greg Serviam

GENEROUS HOSPITALITY WELCOME, INVITATION, FELLOWSHIP Bishop Gruss has designated OLBH as a Hospitable Parish (his letter & the certificate are in this bulletin). Hospitality is the second of four characteristics of a Stewardship Parish. A stewardship parish lives out the practice of generous hospitality. The atmosphere of the parish is welcoming to both parishioners and strangers, welcoming all in the same way Jesus would be welcomed into our home. Beyond a warm but anonymous welcome, hello and handshake, a stewardship parish personally, intentionally, and regularly invites parishioners, inactive Catholics, non-catholics and newcomers to be members of our parish family and to become more involved in the life of the Church. Finally, a stewardship parish offers far more than coffee and doughnuts for fellowship. A stewardship parish offers regular opportunities outside of Sunday worship to gather as the family of God, such as festivals, dinners, socials, and other special events. Based on a written assessment, follow-up interviews, and our parish s pastoral priorities and goals, Bishop Gruss and the Office of Stewardship determined that OLBH satisfies the elements of welcome, invitation, and fellowship indicative of a Hospitable Parish. We are challenged to keep up the good work of generous hospitality by embracing everyone who comes through our doors, regardless of who they might be or what they might want, in imitation of Jesus Christ. Diocesan Social Justice Commission Care for Creation We turn our attention indoors with Advent prayers and preparations for the birth of Christ. For most of us, the indoors make up the part of our environment in which we spend the most time. It is also the most unregulated and can be the most polluted part of the total environment due to new home cleaning products and tighter ventilation. Consider a simpler home environment, where houseplants purify the air, where fresh air is plentiful, and where chemical products are limited and controlled. Cooking for Christ Catholic Rural Life is selling a cookbook that began in It contains recipes, stories and traditions. It is newly updated to follow the liturgical year with ideas for feast days.
