In today s readings we hear Jesus speaking in Galilee as well as a Jewish sage named Sirach writing in Jerusalem more than a century earlier. The two of them touch upon a single truth: The words that come out of us make known the hidden thoughts within us. Speech reveals the secrets of the heart. Sirach teaches that speaking is the test of men and their character (Sir 27:7). One who is upright will utter words that are truthful and encouraging to others. But one whose heart is cluttered with refuse will be exposed, since the fruit of his mouth speaks volumes about the tree that produces it (Sir 27:6). Sirach also compares the testing of our words to clay fired in a kiln if properly prepared, a useful vessel emerges; but if the clay is not fully dried, it will break apart in the extreme heat (Sirach 27:5). In a similar way, Jesus insists that a person speaks out of the abundance of the heart (Luke 6:45). He too compares our speech, whether good or bad, to what grows on a tree: For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit (Luke 6:43). Both readings urge us to make wholesome speech a habit. After all, much about who we are is brought to light through what we say. But there s an additional step: The Lord is asking us to look inward, to examine our hearts and fill them with the good treasure that God desires. Why do purity of heart and speech matter so much? Because, as Jesus declares elsewhere: by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned (Matt 12:37). They matter because they help to decide our final judgment, and this is where the Second Reading comes in. Paul reminds us that God will destroy death forever, and if we are to share in this victory and live forever with the Lord, then we must take all steps necessary to give our hearts and lips to what is good. This week s readings are a continuation of last week s readings. Take some time to reflect on what is in your heart. Think about the words you say or write on social media. Are they truthful and encouraging? Are they good fruit or rotten fruit? Do you have a wooden beam in your eye? And recall the last line from last week s gospel For the measure with which you measure, will in return be measured out to you. Deacon Greg Serviam

2 FAITH FORMATION Stations of the Cross and Fish Fry Lenten Stations of the Cross will begin Friday, March 8 at 6 PM. Prior to there will be confessions at 5 PM. Stations will be followed by a Fish Fry hosted and cooked by the Knights of Columbus. Fish Fry begins at 6:30 PM and includes baked fish, fried fish, coleslaw, and dinner rolls. The cost is $5 per person and $20 per family. Thank You. Steubenville Fundraiser Over the next few months you will see thirteen of our youth after Mass fundraising for their journey to the Steubenville Youth Conference where thousands of participants have had personal experiences with Christ. Please support these students through prayer and donations giving them the opportunity to grow in their faith. The attending students will need over $4000 to make this happen. Sacred Silence in the Mass The Eucharistic celebration is an encounter with the living God through his Son, Jesus, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Like any relationship, that encounter requires us to listen. Listening requires silence. More importantly, we must be receptive to what God is revealing to us in this encounter. We silently recall our sins and ask for In the Penitential Act: God s mercy. Serious inquiries only please. Call Dee at PARISH HAPPENINGS First Eucharist Meeting There will be a parent and child First Eucharist meeting on Wednesday, March 13, at 6:15 PM. Please plan to attend. Fasting Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of both fasting and abstinence. On these two days only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals sufficient to maintain strength may be taken. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices, are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. Those who are over 18 years of age and under 60 years of age are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence. Everyone 14 years of age or older are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent.
