She was often unsure of the future, yet placed trust in God and His will, knowing it would be revealed in the fullness of time. Like Mary, on the road as a young woman, or the apostles on the road to Emmaus, many in our communities may be struggling on the journey, unsure of the future. Through the many ministries, agencies and apostolates supported by the Appeal, we extend the love and mercy of Jesus to those seeking assistance on their journeys. The Spring Music Sharing is May 11 at 1:00 PM in the Parish Center. The band will play and all students pre-k through 8 will perform songs they have learned this year. Everyone is welcome to come and hear the "State of Music" at SSP. Our 3rd graders will participate in the 11:00 AM LinkUp Concert on May 10 at Powell Hall with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. The students will play their recorders along with students from many area schools. The following students participated in the Bellarmine Speech League Final Meet at Vianney on April 29: Clarisse A. received a blue ribbon in the serious category. 4 St. Stephen Protomartyr Parish MISSISSIPPI CHESS MASTERS Ten-year-old Ja'kiyah Brooks lives in one of the poorest regions of the country. The prospects for African- American sixth-graders like Ja'kiyah living in the small backwoods area of Franklin County, Mississippi are limited - that is until Ja'kiyah and her schoolmates discovered the game of chess. Ja'kiyah is one of the stand-outs in the district's chess program, a member of the middle-school team that has already ranked nationally. But Ja'kiyah and her teammates have learned more than a game - they're learning how to think. Their coach and mentor is Dr. Jeff Bulington. "Dr. B." had already launched a championship student chess program in Memphis when an anonymous donor asked him to bring his program to Franklin County two years ago. The benefactor, who wishes to remain anonymous, pays Bulington's salary and program expenses. At first Bulington had hoped for maybe a dozen students to take part, but the number soared, with more than 200 students, from kindergarten through high school, spending hours at chessboards learning the intricate strategies of the game. Using stories to get the concepts across, Bulington gradually taught students how to play the game, and now incorporates lessons in history, math, and science into his coaching. And students are not only winning in tournament competition but in the classroom, as well. College, once an unattainable dream, is now a real possibility for many of these students. For Dr. B., every game of chess is a learning experience - especially when you lose. "You have to listen to the board," Bulington tells his players. "You have to realize there's someone on the other side of the board, that's trying to cause you trouble," and then asks: "And what do we think about people who try to cause us trouble when playing chess; are they our enemies or our friends?" "Friends," the team sings out. Correct, he says, and reminds them that an opponent that "lets you run all over them isn't doing you any favors. It's better to play with someone who points out your mistakes," he says. Failure, "as long as it doesn't become the child's notion of their destiny," isn't a setback. Win or lose, Bulington's most important instruction to his team: "Maintain a poker face." Win and lose with the FAITHFUL DEPARTED same grace and humility. "We're using chess to open some doors and to help people maybe see themselves in a way they didn't see themselves before," Bulington says, "to develop a kind of intellectual, cultural identity that didn't exist before." The voice of Christ the Good Shepherd" speaks in every opportunity we're given to realize something new and better and good in our lives, in every challenge that moves us beyond our safe isolation in order to become part of a world so much bigger than ourselves. For the young chess team of Franklin County, Christ "speaks" on that chess board, calling forth from them the intellectual gifts God has instilled in them to make their lives complete and purposeful. In Christ the Good Shepherd, God's limitless, unconditional love takes on a human face, becomes a real presence in our midst. In God's eyes, love is never absent; in God's heart, forgiveness is never impossible; in God's embrace, no one is ever alone or forgotten. In the morning we ll visit the Missouri Civil War Museum, one of the largest and most extensive Civil War museums in the Midwest. The focus of the museum, located within the Jefferson Barracks Historic Site, is entirely on Missouri s role in the American Civil War. We will also visit the Church of Saint Bernadette, which has a direct link to the military. Then we ll travel to Historic Kimmswick for lunch at the infamous Blue Owl Restaurant & Bakery. In the afternoon we ll visit the Anheuser Museum & Estate, an Anheuser family summerhouse and later permanent residence of Mabel Ruth and her husband, Frederick Straub Anheuser.
