2 STEWARDSHIP: SHARING TIME, TALENT, TREASURE and PRAYER Do nothing out of selfishness; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves - PHILIPPIANS 2:3 Pride and ego are hard things to control. 4 St. Stephen Protomartyr Parish PLEASE LEAVE YOUR NAME AND NUMBER... Phone call number one: The caller ID says it's Jen. Oh no, you say to yourself. Not Jen. Poor woman is going through a rough time, but I just can talk to her today. The ringing stops. Whew, you dodged a bullet. But you stare at your phone. You wonder if she's OK. So you redial her number. "Hi, Jen. Sorry I missed your call but I was in the middle of hauling groceries. What's up?" Phone call number two: It's Frank, one of the dads in the neighborhood. "We're putting a crew together for Saturday morning to go over and fix up the ball field behind the school - you know, rake it out, repair the fences, paint the scoreboard." You say: "That's a great idea. We've been worried about the kids getting hurt on that field. Anything we can do to help. Let me check my calendar for Saturday and if I can be there I will. Thanks for putting this together, Frank. We all appreciate it." But Saturday morning is your weekly golf game and you have no intention of missing it. Hey, Frank's got it all under control. The "two" sons in Jesus' parable can be the same person. Sometimes our sense of empathy manages to overcome our busyness; at other times, we're happy to say the right thing at the moment, with no intention of following through. But compassion and gratitude are only words until we live them in acts of generosity and kindness. Discipleship begins with realizing Christ's presence in our midst and then reflecting that presence in the compassion and peace we extend.
