2 STEWARDSHIP: SHARING TIME, TALENT, TREASURE and PRAYER For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord s ROMANS 14:8 This is the essence of stewardship everything we have and everything we are is a gift from God. 3 September 17, 2017 Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time WELCOME! If you are new to St. Stephen Protomartyr parish or just visiting, Welcome!! Visitors please sign the Guest Book found near the main entrance to the Church. If you would like to register in the parish, please call or the parish office. Welcome to the neighborhood and parish community!! FAITHFUL DEPARTED In the charity of your prayers please pray for the repose of the soul of Jean Westrich and Dolores Italiano who died recently. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. May they rest in peace. CHILDREN AT MASS One of the most important ways to teach our children in the ways of faith is to bring them to Mass. For parents of toddlers and young children this sometimes means that the parents have difficulty praying and participating in Mass. For this reason we offer two programs that allow the parents to get the most out of Mass. There is a NURSERY in the rectory basement during the 10:30 Mass for children 1 to 3 or 4 years old. This is staffed by other parents and teens. The basement is accessible from the alley. The other program is our Children s Liturgy of the Word for children ages 4-7 years old. This is also available during the 10:30 Mass. Father calls the children forward, blesses and dismisses them, along with their catechist, to the parish hall. The children hear the readings at their level and, as they talk about them, do a project that relates to the theme they talk about. All children are welcome to attend. HELPING THE SCHOOL Do you have access to 8 1/2 x 11 paper that is blank on one side? If so, we can use it! Using "scrap" paper helps to offset our supply costs, and we appreciate any donation that we receive. Thanks to those who have answered our plea in the past. We put the paper to good use. If you have questions, please contact the school at PERSONAL HYGIENE ARTICLES Bobbie Holt, who lives in the Carondelet area, is involved in ministry to street people. Her ministry involves making up care packages for the homeless and others in need. Bobbie has been providing the personal hygiene items on her own. At a recent neighborhood meeting her ministry was mentioned and several parishioners in attendance wondered if as a parish we could help provide some of these items. There is a basket near the food pantry box if you would like to contribute to this effort. Items needed are personal hygiene items only either travel size items or those provided by hotels / motels: shampoo/conditioner, razors with shaving cream or gel, hand sanitizer, deodorant, feminine hygiene products/tampons, mouthwash, toothbrushes with covers, toothpaste, nail clippers, nail files MAGIC wash cloths, hair brushes/combs, lip balm etc. LINEN ANGELS What is a Linen Angel? Someone very important to our liturgy! Linen Angels are parishioners who volunteer to wash and iron the purificators (cloths used to wipe the chalices during Communion.) Each Saturday or Sunday during your assigned month. The Linen Angel takes home the purificators used the previous week, washes them and irons them. It is that simple. This ministry is done at your home. Each Linen Angel serves for two months. At the present time we need someone to volunteer for the months of September and March. If you would like to help with this important ministry please contact Mary Regan at If you are homebound or in a nursing home and would like to receive Holy Communion please call the rectory ( ) and let us know. We will arrange for a Eucharistic Minister to visit you and bring communion.

4 St. Stephen Protomartyr Parish GRACELESS SURVIVAL He may have had the desk next to ours. She could have been assigned to the same shift we worked. They were nice enough. But not terribly dependable. Yeah, we were there for the paycheck, sure. But we also took some pride in our work. We realized that our success depended on the success of the whole enterprise. So we focused on our doing our jobs well and helping others do their jobs well so the business would flourish and grow. But not him. Not her. Their focus was on themselves. They did exactly what they were contracted to do no more, no less. They were competent, but not terribly invested. They followed the company employee policies to the letter. Clocked in exactly at nine, gone by 5:01. If they were wronged or had a grievance, management heard about it immediately. Mid-level managers took care of it to keep peace and avoid distractions. If something went wrong, their first interest was not correcting the problem but making sure there was documentation on file shielding them from responsibility. Beneath their superficial cordiality, they saw us, not as co-workers, but as obstacles to their own advancement. And when someone was promoted over them, they made life difficult for everyone. The unforgiving servant of today s Gospel works in a lot of places. Every profession has their share of unforgiving servants. They are about survival theirs. Their self-centered attitude makes a lot more work for all of us. The great sin of the unforgiving servant in today s Gospel is his refusal or inability to realize the grace of God in his midst. He has work that provides for his family; his own debt has been forgiven by an understanding and compassionate boss and, for the obtuse servant, that s all that matters. He possesses no sense of gratitude for the good extended to him; he cannot see that he is part of a world bigger than his own wants and needs. He reasons that the king s forgiving of his debt is something he is entitled to, that survival is the name of the game and he found a way to win. But to forgive as he has been forgiven only a fool would do that. But that is the Kingdom of God that Jesus comes to reveal: a perspective of life that is built on gratitude for the gift of life itself, gratitude that compels us to September 23 - Mass in the Park generosity, justice, and, yes, forgiveness. May we possess the spirit of gratitude for all that we have been given and forgiven and may that spirit enable us to create God s Kingdom here and now, in which forgiveness is joyfully offered and humbly but confidently sought, mirroring the mercy and forgiveness of God, the compassionate Father of us all. FALL PREVENTION AWARENESS DAY 2017 Fall Prevention Awareness Day is Sept. 22nd the first day of fall. This event raises awareness about how to prevent fall-related injuries among older adults. Every 11 seconds, an older adult is seen in an emergency department for a fall-related injury. Many falls are preventable. Stay safe with these tips! 1. Find a good balance and exercise program. Look to build balance, strength, and flexibility. St. Stephen offers a free arthritis exercise class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:00 am. Immaculate Heart of Mary offers a balance class on Thursdays at 9:00 am. 2. Talk to your health care provider. Ask for an assessment of your risk of falling. Share your history of recent falls. 3. Regularly review your medications with your doctor or pharmacist. Make sure side effects aren t increasing your risk of falling. Take medications only as prescribed. 4. Get your vision and hearing checked annually and update your eyeglasses. Your eyes and ears are key to keeping you on your feet. 5. Keep your home safe. Remove tripping hazards, increase lighting, make stairs safe, and install grab bars in key areas. 6. Talk to your family. Enlist their support in taking simple steps to stay safe. Falls are not just a seniors issue. Kirkwood Community Center is holding an event on Friday, September 22, 11:00 am- 2:00 pm to celebrate National Fall Prevention Awareness Day! There will be a variety of free screenings related to better balance and fall prevention and a chance to learn about other events and resources to keep you on your feet. Also, please check out the Medicare Update programs happening from 10:00-12:00 and again from 1:00-3:00 the same day, same location! Separate registration is required. Call to register.
