This desire is so strong that we often go to great lengths to discover and obtain it. Unfortunately, our search sometimes brings us to the wrong places. We mistakenly think that money, certain possessions, social status, popularity, and even power and control can satisfy the longing that exists in our hearts. Time and again, one after another, these things come up empty and we find ourselves with the same unfulfilled longing gnawing at us deep within. It is only the kingdom of God that can satisfy our desire and that ache. We are made and hardwired for this. When we discover it, we know that we have found something very special--a pearl of great price. Then, everything comes together and is put in proper order: our relationship with God, others, ourselves, and even the universe in which we live. PASTORAL STAFF Reverend Quy N. 2 THE SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME July 30, 2017 Dear friends in Christ! May the peace and grace of our Lord Jesus be with you always! Time goes by very quickly, and the month of July is almost finished. I hope you are having and enjoying the summer as we are moving into the month of August. Most of us are familiar with the game find a treasure. The task is to find the hidden treasure. When we find the treasure, our heart fills with joy and happiness. Today s gospel is about finding a treasure and the attitude when one finds it. A man who finds a treasure of great price will go and sell every thing that he has and buy it. Why? Because he knows it will be all worth it. God has given each of us a treasure. The question we must ask ourselves is where is the treasure? There are many people today who are still searching for the treasure. Some of them search for their treasure in the worldly things in which they believe that worldly treasure will bring happiness. However, happiness in the world is not the real treasure that God wants us to seek. The real treasure of happiness can only be found in God. Our close relationship with God is a real treasure. We must remember that God created us, and he knows us better than anyone else. Having a close relationship with God gives us a sense of who we are and where we going. Only God can give us what we are looking for. If we find God, we find all. Every year, parishes throughout the diocese participate in the Missionary Co-operative effort. Last year, we welcomed Joe, a Maryknoll lay missionary, to our parishes. He shared with us stories about the missionary work in Bolivia. Next weekend our parishes will be welcoming a missionary priest who is from Nigeria. He will share with us about his missionary work. I thank you in advance for your support and donations to this Missionary Co-operative effort. Peace & Blessings Fr. Quy Vo THE SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Today s Scripture readings can be found in the GATHER HYMNAL # 1140 Our Prayer s response is: Merciful Lord, hear our prayer WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Question: Why do we have a liturgical season called ordinary time? Can you explain? Answer: Ordinary time is the longest season of the liturgical year. It begins the Monday after January 6, the Epiphany, and goes until the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. That period can last anywhere from five to eight weeks, depending on when Easter is celebrated. Ordinary time picks up again the Monday after Pentecost Sunday and lasts from twenty-three to twenty-seven weeks, until the end of the liturgical year, the Saturday before Advent begins. Why the name ordinary? "Ordinary" is not in contrast to "extraordinary" or "special" but rather stresses the Latin language notion of "ordinal" or numbered Sundays. The Latin title for the season, "tempus ordinarium," conveys the sense that this time of the year is measured or numbered time. Measured time can allude simply to the numbered Sundays, or the notion that these Sundays are a "measured" time to deepen and immerse ourselves completely in the realities of Jesus' incarnation, ministry, passion, death, and resurrection. Ordinary time offers us the opportunity to connect the ordinary lived experiences of our lives with those of Jesus, who modeled for us how to live a truly human existence. JOHN THE BAPTIST As of 7/24/2017 Goal: $12, No. of Gifts: 52 Pledge Amount: $10, Collect Amount: $7, THE PASTORAL COUNCIL Pastoral Council is a consultative body in dioceses and parishes of the Roman Catholic Church that serves to advise the parish priest (Pastor) or bishop about pastoral issues. The council s primary responsibility is to investigate the pastoral reality (the concerns brought to the pastor where he needs input), reflect on it (prayer and reading to so as to be able to make a recommendation to the pastor), and then make a recommendation to the pastor suggesting a possible direction for the good the God s people. The size of the council: The size of the council should range from eight (8) to twelve (12) members. The size should be small enough to allow for and elicit active participation from each member. The complexity of the council s agenda should also be a factor in determining its size. Term of Office: Terms of office should be three years (renewable once) and staggered so council membership rotates. It is advisable that council members not be eligible for re-election to the council until one year after completion of their terms. Selection: A significant number (at least two-thirds) of the council s members should be from the parish-at-large. Additional members (onethird) may be appointed by the pastor as a way to be sure that the council reflects the larger parish community. ANTHONY & JOSEPH As of 7/5/17 Goal: $25, No. of Gifts: 109 Pledge Amount: $15, Collect Amount: $9, REFLECT AND RESPOND TO THE SCRIPTURE: Matthew 13:44-52 In the Gospel reading, Jesus offers a series of "end of the age" parables to the disciples--buried treasure, fine pearls, and the large catch of fish--and adds that every "scribe" (disciple) should make use of "the new and the old" from the storeroom. What do you think Jesus means by this statement? 1 King 3:5, 7-12 Solomon asks from the Lord the gift of a wise and understanding heart, so as king he could know what is right by his people. What gift would you ask from the Lord? Romans 8:28-30 Paul speaks of believers being "called" according to God's purpose. In what ways do you experience this sense of "call"?
