2 THE TWENTY SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 7, 2018 Dear friends in Christ, May the peace and grace of our Lord Jesus be with you always! I hope that all is well with you. This Sunday marks the beginning of the month of October! During the month of October, churches throughout the world honor Mary as our Lady of The Rosary. This coming Saturday is the feast of Our Lady of The Rosary (October 7). The church encourages all the faithful throughout the world to pray the Holy Rosary during the month of October. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI says that the Holy Rosary is one of the most eloquent signs of love that the young generation nourishes for Jesus and his Mother, Mary. Praying the rosary helps to put Jesus Christ at the center, just like Mary did. When reciting the rosary, the important and meaningful moments of salvation history are relived, and when the rosary is prayed in an authentic way, it brings peace and reconciliation. Also, praying the rosary is the most effective weapon to fight against evil. History tells us that Mary appeared to St. Dominic in 1206 after he had been praying and doing severe penances because of his lack of success in combating the Albigensian heresy. After praising St. Dominic for his valiant fight against the heretics, Mary gave him the rosary as a mighty weapon. How wonderful it is for us to know that the blessed Mother is watching over each one of us? As a loving and gentle mother, she understands our pain, sufferings, and sorrows that we carry each day. The good news is that we can rely on the help and protection of the blessed Mother Mary. During this month, let us pray the rosary faithfully to honor Mary. We pray that through her intercession, may God pour out His grace on us and deliver us from all harm! Auspice Maria under protection of Mary. Have a blessed week! Peace & Blessing Fr. Quy Vo THE TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME B Today s Scripture readings can be found in the Hymnal # 1171 Our prayer s response is: Merciful Lord, hear us Question: WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED What is the story behind the rosary? Answer: The rosary is a sacred and popular Catholic devotion, but its origins are mysterious. Prayer beads to facilitate meditation began in the early ages of the Church. In the early medieval period, bead strings were used to count Hail Marys or Our Fathers. A tradition has developed that the rosary in its current form was given to St. Dominic by the Blessed Mother. However, the earliest biographies of the saint do not include this story. In the Middle Ages, the prayers were grouped into 50 Hail Marys with verses from the Psalms and vignettes from the lives of Jesus and Mary. By the 16th century, the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries were established. The rosary rose to prominence in the late 1500s. The Turkish Empire was spreading across eastern Europe and pirates were raiding Christian ships. The Christian nations of Europe rallied for a great battle at sea. Pope St. Pius V urged all Christians to pray the rosary for victory. While vastly outnumbered, the Christian fleet was victorious at the Battle of Lepanto. The pope established October 7th as the feast of the Holy Rosary. Later, all of October would come to be known as the Month of the Rosary. Please remember our parish in your will and estate planning. ANTHONY & JOSEPH Goal: $26, No. of Gifts: 99 Pledge Amount: $16, Collect Amount: $13, REFLECT AND RESPOND TO THE SCRIPTURE: First Reading We hear in the creation account how man's search for a "suitable partner" led to the creation of woman and that God's intention for marriage was "the two of them become one flesh." Why do you think this idea of marriage is still a debate within our larger culture today? Second Reading The author of Hebrews asserts that Christ and believers are "brothers" in our common experience of suffering and death. How does this revealed truth help you in your spiritual journey? Gospel Reading In the Gospel, the Pharisees set out to trap Jesus on the question of marriage and divorce. What would many modern Christians find challenging in Jesus' response to the Pharisees? WEEKLY CALENDAR Sts. Anthony & Joseph Monday, Oct. 8 St. Anthony Crusader s 7 p.m. in the Hall Tuesday Oct. 9 Christian Service Committee 7 p.m. in the Hall Thursday, Oct. 11 Bible 9:00 a.m. in the Office Building Holy Family and St. Joseph will hold its annual Mini Retreat on Saturday, October 13. The retreat will begin at 9:00 with Morning Prayer and conclude with lunch at 12:30. Sr. Kitty Hanley, a Sister of St. Joseph, will be our retreat leader. If you have had the opportunity to hear Sr. Kitty before, you know this will be a wonderful morning. It would be helpful to call the parish office ( ), so we make sure we have enough food for everyone. There is no charge for the retreat. If you wish to make a free will offering to help cover the expense of the food, it would be appreciated.
