2 THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD JANUARY 6, 2019 Dear friends in Christ! May the grace and peace of Jesus, the wonderful counselor, be with you always! And Happy New Year to each of you. We are three days into the new year, and I hope that you are off to a good start on your new year s resolutions. I think it is good to have new year s resolutions. When we re looking back the past year, we may discover we have accomplished many things that we are proud of and a few things we may not satisfied with our progress. Perhaps, in the new year, we hope for a new beginning and to resolve to approach the items we need to work on from the past year. Today we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany. It is the feast where God reveals himself to mankind through the incarnation of Jesus, the Word-Made-Flesh. The feast of the Epiphany is associated with the visit of the Magi. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said in his homily the Magi were the wise who studied the skies, but not in an attempt to read the future in the stars;...rather, they were men who sought something greater, who sought the true light, the light capable of indicating the path to follow in life. Seeing a strange star appear above them in the sky, the magi knew in their hearts that the long-waited Messiah would arrive soon, and they must go on a journey to seek him. Guided by the star, they arrived to the Bethlehem and saw the Messiah Jesus, the light of world; that changed their lives forever. Seeing Jesus, the magi were touched by the mercy, love, and compassion of God who revealed himself through Jesus. They return to their homeland with peace and joy. New Year s is a time for us to seek something that is greater. Like the magi, we must be willing to let go of our comfort, fear, anxiety, or doubts. We must go on a journey to seek the greater in life, and Jesus is the only greater thing in life we can ever hope for and want. While the world offers to us false, empty promises, and pseudo happiness, only Jesus offers to us the true peace and joy. May Jesus, the light of the world, grant you his peace and keep you in his loving heart as you begin a new week! Peace & Blessings THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Today s Scripture readings can be found in the GIA Hymnal number 1011 Our Prayer s response is: Jesus, light of world, hear us WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Question In our church, on the feast of Epiphany, we write initials over the doorway. What does this stand for or mean? Answer: Epiphany, like Christmas, is celebrated in various ways by different nationalities and cultures. The customs and traditions surrounding these days give them a distinct feel and meaning. In many Slavic traditions, Epiphany is observed by marking the year on the mantle of the entrance to a room or house. In the center are the initials of the traditional names of the three wise men: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. The purpose is to ask God's blessing on the home, marking it as though the Wise Men had come and found therein the Christ Child. It reminds us of the marking of the doorways in Egypt with the blood of the lamb so that the angel of death would pass over. God's blessing comes to each home as a source of protection and grace. In some places, Epiphany is celebrated much like a mini-christmas. Gifts are exchanged in memory of the gifts of the Wise Men and special meals are prepared. In any event, the manifestation of Christ as the Light of the World is a time to seek God's blessing and rejoice in the gift of Jesus to Scripture readings for the week of January 6, 2019 Sunday: Is 60:1-6/Eph 3:2-3a, 5-6/Mt 2:1-12 Monday: 1 Jn 3:22-4:6/Ps 2:7bc-8, 10-12a [8ab]/Mt 4:12-17, Tuesday: 1 Jn 4:7-10/Ps 72:1-2, 3-4, 7-8 [cf. 11]/Mk 6:34-44 Wednesday: 1 Jn 4:11-18/Ps 72:1-2, 10, [cf. 11]/Mk 6:45-52 Thursday: 1 Jn 4:19-5:4/Ps 72:1-2, 14 and 15bc, 17/Lk 4:14-22a Friday: 1 Jn 5:5-13/Ps 147:12-13, 14-15, [12a]/Lk 5:12-16 Saturday: 1 Jn 5:14-21/Jn 3:22-30 STS. Prayer for the Epiphany Dear Jesus, though a newborn, the wise men knew your greatness. On a hint from the heavens, they traveled far from their places of comfort so that they could honor you. From their belief in your divinity, they gave amazing gifts, offerings that symbolized your life, power, and even your death. And because of a dream in the night, they altered their well-laid plans to return home in order to protect you. May we be so willing to honor, sacrifice, and obey, all for love of you, as we meditate on the meaning of this day. Amen.

In what ways do you see Isaiah's prophecy fulfilled today? Second Reading St. Paul informs the Ephesians that "the mystery made known" to him "by revelation" was that the Gentiles are "coheirs" with the Jews "in the promise in Christ Jesus." This message was very reluctantly received. Why do you think some people struggle with the idea that God desires to save all people through His Son? Gospel Reading Matthew tells us the visit of the magi "greatly troubled" King Herod and all of Jerusalem. Why do you think the good news of Jesus Christ remains a threat to some people even today? 9th Grade Faith Formation MANDATORY Retreat The Mandatory retreat for the 9th grade Faith Formation Class will be on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at St. John the Baptist, Newport from 9:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. (ends after 4:00 p.m. mass). How are the feast of the baptism of Jesus and the account of the wedding feast of Cana related to the Epiphany celebration? The Epiphany season focuses on revealing Jesus to the world. Following the Christmas celebration, the liturgical year lays out a series of manifestations in which Jesus is made publicly known. From its very beginning, the Christian community highlighted three events in the life of Jesus. These are the Epiphany, the Baptism of the Lord, and the wedding feast at Cana. The Epiphany discloses Jesus to the world of the Gentiles, represented by the Magi from the East. The accounts of Jesus' baptism reveal his identity and mission, along with exposing him to those to whom he was sent to minister. The miracle of turning water to wine at Cana, unique to John's Gospel, is the first public sign Jesus performs, thus manifesting his identity and his powers. Today in the Roman Church, these are usually celebrated on three successive Sundays: Epiphany, the Baptism of the Lord, which is usually the next Sunday, and the wedding feast of Cana, which is only proclaimed on the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time in Year C. These feasts connect around the concept of epiphany, public manifestation of Jesus to the world. They help us get to know more intimately who Jesus is. Spend some time delving more deeply into your understanding of who Jesus is and continue to cultivate "epiphany" moments. Please remember our parish in your will and estate planning
