No, we don t have to; my mom s a good cook!! In God you come up against something which is in every respect immeasurably superior to yourself. 5 El Paso, TX experience with Father Rafael Garcia, SJ by Bill Schmidt, SFX parishioner I recently volunteered to be chair of the new Refugee Committee at SFX. Steve Bruns is working with me to explore current services in KC and determine how SFX may help. In March, I attended a five day immersion experience sponsored by our former pastor, Fr Rafael Garcia, in El Paso, TX to learn about conditions of refugees on the border. The first day we traveled to a border wall in El Paso. It was 20 ft tall, very intimidating and foreboding, and obviously unwelcoming. We talked to a Border Control guard who was honest and as forthcoming as he felt he could be. A refugee caught for the first time is returned to their home of origin. A second offense results in being booked and charged with a felony. With a third offense, a person is placed in a detention center awaiting deportation with no possibility of legal entry to the U.S. for at least 10 yrs. An immigration attorney from Diocesan Migrant Services explained some of the injustices of the system. When a person seeks asylum (defined as coming from an area that is dangerous, perhaps life threatening) he/she has to prove their dangerous situation. Many arrive with no papers because they had to leave their home immediately. So they are returned to a violent situation. A highlight was visiting Fr Rafael s parish to observe the services provided. Volunteers teach ESL, citizenship, computer skills and other adult and children classes. Food and clothing is made available. We visited a large detention center where about 150 men and 100 women were being held until they could be returned to their country of origin. It was sad, but still hopeful and inspiring to see their resolve. Fr. Rafael said Mass which was very emotional for a number of them. Reuben Garcia is founder of a home that welcomes refugees who made it across the border, but have no idea how to proceed. He spoke passionately about the injustices of the system. He noted that our way of life in the U.S. is subsidized by people who work at below poverty wages. We visited Juarez and met saintly people who mobilized a support group for women with cancer, a priest who provides help to those in poverty, and a group named Manos Amigas which supports the elderly and focuses on education and scholarships for young persons. Future Action: A meeting will be held within a month to determine if there is interest among SFX parishioners to engage helping refugees in Kansas City. Pictures: 1) Fr.
