4 M.y dear People, THE RECTOR'S LETTER The Rectory, Ackworth. I was greatly surprised to receive a gift on the 25th. anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood. It was not an anniversary which I intended to mark in any way. I was touched by the kindness of those w&o arranged the presentation and of those who contributed towards the gift. The beautiful decanter I shall always treasure and I shall always be reminded of you on the many occasions when I hope to be able to use it. The money which accompanied it I shall use to buy something else which will be equally special and equally treasured. I haven't yet decided how to use so unexpected and so large a gift. I promise that I won't spend it all on continually refilling the decanterj The whole episode has amazed me and I shall look back on it with gratitude and wonder. Thank you. A fte r 25 years as a p r ie s t one must be aware of the in d e s c rib a b le p r iv ile g e one has been g iv e n, of the many people from whom one has learned so much of what C h r is t ia n it y means, and of the o p p o rtu n itie s one has had. But, in e v it a b ly, the dominant fe e lin g i s of being an u n p ro fita b le se rv a n t, of not having been as u s e fu l as one might have been. In my own case there has been a d iffid e n c e which i s p a r tly temperamental but a lso s in f u l which has prevented my attem pting many th in g s which I should have attem pted. I have recently read a thought provoking book, 'The Clerical Profession', by Anthony Russell. It outlines the ways in which the parochial clergy have seen their responsibilities and their function over the centuries. The opportunities have varied from generation to generation, but always the Anglican clergy have had a role, and a beneficent role, in society. The great abuses there have certainly been serve only to highlight the good which has predominated. One of the most encouraging features of the book is the reminder it gives that the highest standards of the parochial ministry are the result of the terrible changes of the Industrial Revolution. A deplorably bad period in the rural parishes though not, I think, in Ackworth - caused the alienation of many of the people from their Church. Into the new industrial centres came men and women from the country parishes where the parsons had ceased to care. Ifcowas in the new towns that a new devotion and a fresh pastoral vigour were experienced. From the worst there sprang the best of the Church of England, that on which we now look back as a golden age. We cannot doubt that England's Church, and a more confident Anglican clergy, will before too long once more surprise most gloriously a lost and bewildered people. Tour sincere friend and Rector,

5 SEE LINK JECEMBER 1980 O u r BisHop WRiTES... ON "THE DEANERY CIRCUSES" That was the nick name we gave to the gatherings in October and November at Halifax, Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Hemsworth. The services were well attended, and it was good to meet so many people at the 'market stalls'. These were attractively set out, and the wares wereof high quality and great variety. I felt that there was valuable material for every parish to use to take forward its study and action on any one of the Five Essentials. In to 1981 After this year of stock taking in the parish and the deanery, we must move confidently forward. I hope that each parish will address itself to the priority that it is 'homing-in' on. It may be the deepening and enriching of our WORSHIP, allowing for fuller involvement in the congregation. Perhaps you are developing a more wide ranging expression of PASTORAL CARE in the parish, drawing on the gifts and skills that are latent in our FELLOWSHIP. For many I know EDUCATION in the parish will be the priority. Some churches are consciously turning outwards in more effective WITNESS AND EVANGEL ISM: While others see their immediate priority to be more deliberately involved in SERVICE of the local community, social responsibility. You have been studying the Five Essentials, and now the next steps are being taken in accord with your priority. Sunday, January 4th, 1981: An invitation- Wakefield Diocesan News In the Cathedral at 3.00 p.m. we shall be holding a Diocesan service of Thanksgiving and Commitment. And I invite each parish to send representatives. It will be good to be together as the Diocesan family on the first Sunday of the year. At the service I will present to the Churchwardens from each parish a copy of the Alternative Services Book. A gift from the diocese to the parish to mark the-1 importance of the publication of this book of the new services. During the service I am asking every parish to offer a commitment card, pledging itself to further study and action on the Five Essentials, and indicating what the parish priority is for DO 1 \ The Church inthe Eighties A Diocesan fb llern of Renewal

6 On a separate issue I am sometimes asked about "Going for the Standard" and our work this autumn in the parishes in facing the need for giving more money to forward our mission and maintain the ministry. Is this part of the Church in the Eighties and the Five Essentials? The answer is NO. Our Church in the Eighties pattern of Renewal through the Five Essentials in the life of the parish is, I believe, basic to our calling and being and growing as the Body of Christ. This is what matters This under God is what we must be praying and working on. The financial challenges to us as Church people are part of the reality of British life in the 1980's due to inflation. While we must take the level of our giving much more seriously than we have been used to in the past, and we do need to go for the Standard in all our parishes, I hope that we shall take this in our stride. MONEY AND BUILDINGS are not ends in themselves. They are means to service physically the true calling of the local church in the Five Essentials of our Christian life. It is the quality of the calling and the life that matters. As we come to terms with this Christian calling, and our commitment as persons and parishes, then our financial obligations fall into place. At the Cathedral service in January the parishes will be asked to offer a second card expressing our will to go for the Standard and giving thanks for what has so far been given or promised. But that is only a means to an end. Let's make no mistake what matters in the 1980's is the Renewal of the Church in our parishes in the Five Essentials of Christian Life. * COLIN WAKEFIELD WhAT's ON S 7 'Living Sound' in concort at Halifax Parish Church. East Africa this year, with a vast and intractable refugee problem in Somalia, the horrors of hunger and civil disorder in Karamoja. And now the Algerian earthquake and the devastation of El Asham. Bishop Colin, once again, commends to you the Christmas appeal of Christian Aid. This appeal is to church people to make their personal contribution to the works of the churches engaged in world-wide succour of victims of many kinds. Christian Aid's income during the past year saw a great upward swing due to the warm generosity of the British people, particularly during a record Christian Aid Week. This is the good news. Glory to God in the Highest, Peace and Goodwill on Earth'. Say it with a gift to Christian Aid.

7 KIRK SMEATON KIRK SMEATON, Little Smeaton, Walden Stubbs, Cridling Stubbs and Womersley could well be villages from a Betjeman poem. As far as the Diocese is concerned they are on the far border. East of the Great North Road they are not typical of the West Riding. The stonework of the churches is a clean grey, never blackened by the pits or the mills. The landscape is flat and strangely Dutch, and the industrial scents of Knottingley and Pontefract seem a world away. The vicar of the two parishes is Canon Richard Phillips, who this month celebrates his Golden Jubilee as a priest. Ordained a deacon in 1929, he had entered Kelham Theological college at 17. After 6 years as a curate at Brentwood, Essex, a spell in York and another back in Essex, Fr. Phillips came into the Diocese as Curate-in-charge of Upton in 1938, and has been here ever since. In those war years the colliery at Upton was flourishing and in the ownership of Dorman Long. After five years, Fr. Phillips moved to another parish on the edge of the Diocese, St. Peter's, Barnsley, where he started a four-page tabloid called 'S t. P eter's Newspaper" which was always full of useful information, such as 'The Co-op Number for St. Peter's Church is BB 2219,' with the added note, 'We do thank very sincerely those who help St. Peter's to have some divi.' Every issue contained a local film guide, with a star photo - of Margaret Rutherford or James Robertson Justice.... Perhaps the climax of Fr. Phillips' ministry at St. Peter's was an exhibition of the work of the church's architect, Temple Moore, which was held in December 1963.and opened by John Betjeman. During his 22 years at Barnsley, Fr. Phillips was elected to the Church Assembly and remained a Proctor in Convocation until earlier this year. In 1965 he left the traffic noise of Brinckman Road, Barnsley, for the quiet green meadows of Womersley - and we wish him God's blessing as he continues his faithful and friendly ministry in his parishes. SPOT ON! A little girl had to go to school by bus, and every morning Mum gave her the bus fore - 3d. Then came the day when the bus fare went up to 4d., and 4d. had to be given to her to take on the bus. Then Sunday came round. The little girl was usually given 3d. to put in the collection at Church. This Sunday, however, she looked at it with a puzzled expression. So Mum said to her, 'What's the matter, dear? That's your 3d.' 'Yes,' came the reply, 'but shouldn't this go up too?' [from St. Peter's Newspaper. January 1964]
