Our sadness at their going is mixed with joy for them that they are going to do something that they want to do, and with respect for their courage in changing course. We have been grateful for their time here with us. As we believe that Michael was sent to us just at the right time to be our organist, so we must believe that he and his family are now needed in another parish, and that our needs also will in due course be met. I say nothing of Michael's probable need of a musical parson. We hope that they will come to see us from time to time, and we are sure that Jane and Clare will always be reminded of St. Cuthbert's as the church where they were baptized.

4 WELCOME, The RSverend S.E.C. Whitcombe has just come to live in Cricketers Close. We welcome him most warmly and hope that he will be very happy here. I am glad to say that Mr. Whitcombe has agreed to exercise a ministry among us as an Honorary Assistant Priest. Thi% is a great help and a great joy to me. A priest, of course, never retires, and since Mr. Whitcombe retired from his Rectory in the Diocese of Coventry he has helped in his son's parishes at Lightcliffe and latterly at Largs, in the Episcopal Church of Scotland. I am sure that what he does for us here will be greatly appreciated. MRS. NEWBORN. Although I had met Mrs. Newborn only twice, I felt that I knew her very well, both from what I heard of her from her friends and from the kind and wise letters I had from her. Some of the wisest advice I received when I first came to Ackworth was from her and from her cousin, Bishop George Clarkson, that wisest, straightest, most admirable of men. The affection and respect in which I knew that she was held was confirmed by the demonstration of great love that was her funeral service at St. Cuthbert's. May she rest in peace. WANTED. One of our great needs is for volunteers to run a Church Youth Club. It is the sort of activity for which the Mission Room should be increasingly used. Please- think whether the glaring need does not mean that you are being called to serve in this way. We need extra chmir members for both churches. There is no finer training in the life and worship of the Church than membership of a church choir. GARDEN PARTY. The Garden Party will be held on the Rectory Tennis Court on Saturday, June 20th., at 3p.m. Offers of help, please, to Miss Sproston. There will be a large marquee, so you are guaranteed protection from the blazing sun.

5 SEE LINK JUNE 1981 Wakefield Dioceean News ^Mr. Cecil Beverley, the Diocesan Secretary for nine years until February last year, died after a short illness on May 4th. He was 63. Before his appointment he was Bishop Eric Treacy's personal assistant. The Archdeacon of Pontefract writes an appreciation of The affectionate abbreviation of his name sums up much of our feelings about this man, who by his service to the Diocese and in particular to the clergy, endeared himself to us. Whilst during the war on active service he had achieved the rank of Major, he rarely referred to it and up to the very last days of his illness was unselfish in his demands and humble in his relationships with others. He came to us after valuable experience in industry and with a background training in a Solicitor's office, because it was intended at first that he should take up that work. After the war he returned to the family business and from that came to Church House on the warmest possible recommendation of Harry Clough, his parish priest. He gave to us not only the fruits of his training and experience in the world, but also his commitment to His Lord which he had tested in regular membership of Battyeford Church. Before he became Diocesan Secretary he had a unique opportunity to learn the job- he undertook, at the request of Bishop Eric, to go through all the parish trusts at the Diocesan Registry, to tabulate and record them in an official Hst. This gave. him a total picture of the various trusts, and also some knowledge of the parishes and their resources. He was then asked to be personalassjstanrtobisho^ BEV. this capacity he shared many of the Bishop's thoughts and problems and gained a picture of the Diocese as in no other way. Finally he came to the office: a diligent member of a P.C.C: a worshipping member of his parish church, with a life-long knowledge of the things that go to make up the life of the parish. All this made him 'Bev' our Diocesan Secretary. He transformed the Diocesan Office into a place where enquiries were treated with personal attention. He was proud only of the fact that he never refused a telephone call and was constantly at the disposal of the clergy and officials from parishes. He once said to me - 'I try always to say "yes" whenever a request comes up, whatever its nature.' This meant that he gave himself without limit or complaint. He arrived every morning without fail at 8-30 a.m. and never left before 5 p.m. He realised that all the money he spent for the Diocese was the contributions of individuals - often 'widows' mites.' His diligence is an inspiration to all of us who worked with him and knew him and we are sad. that his retirement, which began little over a year ago, should have been cut so short by his illness. He will long be remembered in our prayers and fellowship. May he rest in peace.

6 O ur B ish o p w rites on PARTNERS IN MISSION During the week end of June 21st we shall be greeting two visitors to our diocese. Canon Ernest Mkize comes to us from South Africa. He serves on the Cathedral Staff at Natal, and is Diocesan director of Stewardship. Our other guest, Dr. Detlev Bleyl, works in a hospital in East Germany. A lay member of the Evangelical Church, he is concerned with the mission of the Church in the urban areas. They are taking part, with other visitors from India, Latin America and Australia in the English Partners-in-Mission consultation. Our consultants will be examining the work of our national Church organisations. These include the Church Commissioners, the Missionary socities, the Mothers' Union and the Boards and Councils of the General Synod. And by looking, listening, questioning and contributing they will help these bodies to determine their priorities in Mission during the next three years. Not so long ago we used to think of Mission as something that 'we' in the West did to 'others' in foreign parts. Then we awoke to the need of Mission in de-christianised England, too. To-day we realise that there is only one Mission Wakefield Cathedral Centenary Development Programme THE MEMORIAL FUND GETS THE GO-AHEAD* Work will begin this month on the Eric Treacy Memorial Fund, to be built next to Wakefield Cathedral. in one world. It is God's mission in a shrinking planet, where we are all interconnected *by modern communications and transport, politics and trade. Those involved in this Mission in one part of the world can share their gifts, experiences and insights with fellow Christians in another. We are part of the same Mission. It is helpful to have fresh eyes and minds looking at things which we either take for granted or else fail to see altogether. Consultants can put the hard questions or the innocent question which can make us sit up and think. During their time with us Carton Mkize and Dr. Bleyl will be visiting and worshipping in three contrasting parishes. They will be meeting members of our Councils for Education, Ministry and Mission. They will have a chance to talk with the Mothers' Union Executive and see a number of different towns. We hope that they will get a flavour of life in the diocese. We also hope that they will help us to determine what kind of fuller Partners in Mission consultations we might have in the diocese in two or three years time. + COLIN WAKEFIELD David Shephard, the famous wild life painter, is donating one of his original paintings to be sold in aid of the Memorial Hall. Parish churches, schools and youth clubs have all donated money through various events: 294 'bricks' have been sold, Wakefield Girls High School raising enough to purchase 35 bricks, at CIO each. BOON REVIEW: 'A Handbook of Pariah Hnanca' by Phyllis Carter and Michael Perry (Mowbray, f3 50) An admirable guide to all aspects of parochial finance, trusts and property At least one copy should be in the possesion of every P.C.C.. and even the most qualified teacher will welcome rt as a sure guide to Church book keeping and the financial relationships of parish, parson. 7 A WARDEN FOR 40 YEARS CYRIL BROOK 1981 is a year of celebration for Cyril Brook and the people of St. John's, Upperthong, at Holmfirth. 9 My dear People, THE RECTOR'S LETTER. The REctory, Ackworth. The work on the Parish Church roof is now almost completed. When the plumbers have done their work on the new guttering and the fall pipes the church should be v/ater-proof, or as water-proof as that sort of roof can be. We are having the lych gate re-roofed and then one phase of our restoration programme will be over. It has been a nerve wracking phase, with many frustrations and causes of annoyance, but it has been exhilarating in that the need to raise a lot of money very quickly has been a test of Ackworth's love of its Parish Church. There has been an encouraging response in many quarters.our church life has benefitted in many ways as a result of what we have had to do. The Auction of Favours was an example of what can be done when imagination is stirred, talents are mobilized, and the spirit of defeatism and acquiescence in the apparently prevailing apathy is given its marching orders. A great success was needed to show that in fact great things have been accomplished and things have been changing. We go on now with the restoration work. The roof was only the beginning, a beginning which has given us the confidence to tackle the work of the next few years. But the Parish Church building is not preserved as an end in itself. It is what it is used for that matters. There has been a remarkable change in atmosphere over the last few years. Those who have been loyal and patient have come through trying days, days sometimes of deepening depression, to days of hopefulness. We have learned a lot together that we could never have learned had we been one of these parishes where everything always apparently goes well. I have sometimes resented the fact that Ackworth has not been the sort of parish which one would have expected it to be, the sort of parish where the Church occupies its proper place as indisputably the centre of the social 2-ife of the village, as unquestionably the most honoured inswtion in the community. But I now see that our weakness, and the coldness with which we are generally regarded, is going to be seen to have been a blessing. For it is our handicaps that are teaching us so many lessons and that are slowly but surely leading us to the time of greatest influence and usefulness the Church in Ackworth has had for centuries. For years I have lived with the daily question, 'What is going to be done about the Almshouses?} I am overjoyed now to be able to announce that an appeal is about to be launched by the Trustees. The great interest in the restoration of the building will be channelled into generous support for the Appeal, and many people will be made happy. Watch for details of the Appeal. The Trustees are glad no longer to have to seem to be standing in the way of people's desire to help. Your sincere Friend and Rector,
