Additional Information Please add here, or on another sheet, anything else which you would like the Patron and the Bishop to know about the conditions, needs and traditions of the parish. The grave yard is closed and is maintained by Kirklees Council. There is a small area designated for the burial of cremated remains. The church would like to encourage the community to use the building more and to bring it back to the heart of the community. This was brought about in 2014, when the church had a devastating theft of lead from the roof. Damage to both the inside and outside of the church, resulted in it being temporarily closed. In the darkest times there were talks that the church may never re-open as raising such a substantial amount of money seemed impossible, but as they say every cloud has a silver lining and this led to the formation of the Friends of St. Augustine s Group, which set out to raise funds to repair and re-open the church. With the dedication of the congregation, the community and the Friends of St Augustine s to raise the roof the goal was achieved through many fundraising events, and a large grant from the Listed Places of Worship. In September 2016 there was a celebration weekend, which included a coffee morning, an evening concert featuring The Yorkshire Philharmonic Chamber Choir, and two youth music groups from Shelley Musica, and a service of Thanksgiving and Dedication, with Rt Revd Jonathan Gibbs, Bishop of Huddersfield. The Friends Group is still active organising events to bring the villagers into church. We have now set up a Messy Church which was the brain child of the Curate Kate Currie. This is steadily growing and has received positive feedback from the community. 9
10 IX. The New Priest List the qualities and skills you would like to see in the new priest. Also think about the main areas of mission that you would like the new priest to prioritise in their ministry. At the present time, the two parishes of Scissett and Clayton West with High Hoyland would seem to be disparate in terms of the size of the congregation, the number of laity working for each church and the innovative ways in which we reach out to our respective communities. Nevertheless both parishes wish to engage with a new incumbent with the following skills and qualities and who has energy and empathy to work in our communities to help us grow. WORSHIP: A visionary someone who can look at existing practices and opportunities for improvement Maintain a strong music tradition within all worship scenarios and connect with both contemporary and traditional styles of worship Has the ability to be a spiritual guide to people of all ages COMMUNICATOR: Able to support the teaching of children and young families in a way that benefits current congregation members and encourages other families in the village to attend A person who has a desire to serve others and make a difference to other people s lives LEADER: A person who : is willing to delegate whilst providing support is ready to be involved and support sub-groups within the church and address the challenges of developing and growing a church community within the 21 st century has a flexible approach whilst appreciating the rules and regulations of the Church of England, yet can also argue for flexibility when appropriate has a positive outlook and a sense of humour, possessing a keen sense of empathy has energy in abundance for this challenging role OUTREACH: Someone who: is friendly and communicative to all giving feedback and encouragement for the contribution made by the many laity whose involvement ensures that the parishes remains viable and alive will work with a pastoral team and empower them to represent the church within the parish and as well as maintaining a personal presence within the villages recognises the value of the church building being used for community activities and is prepared to consider further development of the building will continue to work with the schools in the two villages is mindful that the population within the two villages of the joint benefice are growing will continue strong Ecumenical relationships Members of the PCCs of the Joint Benefice would like to thank all who take the time to consider this post. 10
