8 IT IS A GREAT HONOUR to welcome back to our Chancel, the Rev. Dr. A. Leonard Griffith. Dr. Griffith has long been regarded as one of the finest preachers of his generation and perhaps the greatest preacher raised and trained in Canada. He studied at McGill and served at Chalmers United Church, Ottawa; The City Temple, London (England); Deer Park United, Toronto and St. Paul s Bloor St. Anglican Church, Toronto. He has authored more than twenty books and has a long relationship with Yorkminster Park. Leonard recommended Dr. John Gladstone to the pulpit of this church and remained one of Dr. Gladstone s closest friends. He served as pastor to the Rev. Kerr Spiers and as mentor and professor to Dr. Holmes. St. Paul s Bloor Street has recently produced and published a DVD of sermons by Dr. Griffith. The DVD is available for sale in the Narthex following today s service. For more information, please visit ANTHEM NOTE The accompaniment for the Kyrie eleison from the Messe Solonnelle was written by Louis Vierne to utilize two organs. The work begins with a fortissimo introduction from the Grand Orgue, and the entries of the choir are prepared by the playing of the Orgue de Choeur. The work continues the interplay between the instruments with the Grand Orgue, represented here at Yorkminster Park by the Great and Swell divisions and with the Orgue de Choeur played on the Choir and Positiv divisions. Also please see all the book titles, on the Centre Hall bulletin board. (YPBC Women's Ministries) Safety First Parents want to know who is coming and going from the institutions that take care of their children. Here at church we want to be sure our children are safe. Being a downtown church on the subway line, we are vulnerable to visitors who may not have the children s best interests in mind. To facilitate safety, new door hardware has been installed in the lower corridors at the North end of the building. This enables us to lock the doors of entry into the Children s Ministry area. From the time that children are dropped off for Choristers by parents (10 a.m.) until the end of the service, entry will be restricted with some doors being locked. The three doors affected are the doors at either end of the corridor alongside the gym and the door at the base of the west stairs descending from Cameron Hall. Entry into the children s area is easily made through the door by the elevator and wheel chair accessible washroom. This door is NOT locked at any time but this area is monitored. Safety first isn t always convenient and we apologize to all who may be inconvenienced by the new system. 9
10 Blessings of the Cross: A Lenten Bible Study Based on the Revised Common Lectionary Robert Martin Walker, Author The Blessings of Death The Fifth Sunday of Lent Ezekiel 37: 1-14 Romans 8:6-11 John 11:1-45 In this fifth week of our Lenten Study the cross of Christ comes within our visual sights. On the cross, Jesus changed an emblem of suffering and shame into a signal beacon of life eternal. The necessity for humanity to suffer the penalty of death was erased. We no longer need fear death and begin to discover a difference between the sadness and pain of death and the joy in the power of God to overcome it. We are far removed from the Babylonian exile where the people of God were without hope. They were lost and felt cut off from God. Yet God, through the prophet Ezekiel, promises they will live again in the land of Israel and that they will be infused with the life-giving power of God s Spirit. (pg. 40) We are to be encouraged to know that God redeems in the midst of hopelessness. It is the Spirit of God spoken by the prophet that the Apostle Paul wants the church at Rome to embrace. The Spirit brings new life to believers. This power of new life is the same power that was present in the Resurrection, raising Jesus to new and eternal life. (pg. 42) The Apostle contrasts flesh and Spirit; flesh which leads to death and Spirit to life eternal. When we live to our flesh we are alienated from God and have as much life as the bones in Ezekiel s vision. Both the Christian church and the valley of dry bones are given life through the Spirit of God. The power of God to give life is demonstrated in the gospel passage. The bones may not be dry, but there could be little doubt that Lazarus was truly dead. While death is inevitable and inescapable and grief very appropriate and useful, this story also shares that new life can emerge from death. For everyone who believes that Jesus is Lord and receives God even though they die, will live, (John 11:25). Lazarus s death gave God an opportunity for God s power to be revealed and we can use this lesson to evaluate our relationship to God and the church and allow God to breathe into us, renew us, refresh us and give us new life. If you are not in a Lenten Study Group, you may still study along with us by contacting the Rev. Cheryle Hanna at x235. Readings for next Sunday and for the sixth week of the Lenten Study These readings will be used in our worship next Sunday and in the weekly Lenten Bible Studies.
