5 Reflections for This Week July 2, 2017 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 KGS 4: 8-11, 14-16A; PS 89: 2-3, 16-19; ROM 6: 3-4, 8-11; MT 10: Our First Reading from Second Kings, chapter 4, features Elisha. You may recall that Elisha was plowing in a field when the prophet Elijah called him to follow him. Something happened at that moment and Elisha chose to do it, which is what brought him to this point in his journey (as reported in today s Holy Scripture). We often address the fact that each of us is called as well. Our calling, like Elisha s and like those of Christ s Apostles, is really not that much different. Christ said, Follow Me, and the Apostles basically dropped everything, ceased pursuing what they were doing in some cases with good jobs and vocations and followed Christ. We are called to follow the Lord from the moment of our Baptism, but how many of us actually take that calling seriously? It is not just a question of hearing the call; the key is whether we are listening for it? It is there, but we must be aware of it in order to respond. Elisha s call and our calls are signs of God at work. God has a plan for each of us. We are the means by which God s work is continued in our parishes, in our communities, and in the Church. God s ministry on earth will be carried out and accomplished. None of us is the entire ministry; we can all be replaced. However, by the same token in God s eyes we are absolutely necessary. Are we ready to respond? Are we ready to be disciples of the Lord? Reprinted with permission from Catholic Stewardship Consultants When Jesus saw their faith Everything that you experience is linked to the love of God who loves you, and to his desire for your good. He is present in your life no matter what you do. Time is a sacrament of your meeting with God and his mercy, with his love for you and his desire that everything work toward your good. Then every fault becomes a happy fault (felix culpa). If you looked at every moment of your life in this way, then spontaneous prayer would be born within you. It would be a continuous prayer since the Lord is always with you and always loves you. Every moment of your life would be permeated with the love of the Presence that always encompasses you. Through faith we discover that man only seems to be the protagonist in the history of the world; in reality God is the main protagonist. The presence of God throughout history affects equally the things that happen in the realm of politics, society, and the economy, as well as in our family or in professional matters. He is present everywhere, and everything depends on him. In his hands lie the destinies of all of us, as well as the destinies of nations and of the world. We come to know all this through faith, which brings about inner peace in us. This peace flows from faith that gives us the understanding that he, who is the eternal might and eternal love, holds everything in his hands filled with mercy. He guides everything with his eternal wisdom and total love. Faith gives us feelings of security and peace, and love. Faith is a different way of looking at the world, another way of seeing that which is especially difficult. Faith allows us to come to know God in the phenomena of nature in which we can continually discover the traces of his works and the traces of his concern for us and the world that surrounds us. Father Tadeusz Dajczer Father Dajczer (+2009) was a Polish priest and professor of theology in Warsaw, and co-founder of the Families of Nazareth Movement.

6 JMJ Dear Parishioners, Word for Last Sunday: The Gospel last Sunday was all about what to fear and what not to fear. A few weeks ago at MerryFest, I experienced some natural fear when I went on one of the rides that made the world turn upside down! FEAR is one of the greatest tools of the Enemy of Human Nature: the Devil. SATAN LOVES FEAR! He has so many uses for fear. Fear first entered human life in the Garden of Eden when the Devil through the serpent convinced Adam and Eve to fear that God was hiding something from them. One of the things I have learned in healing ministry is how there needs to be certain steps taken to eradicate fear from our lives. The Five Keys proposed by Neal Lozano many have found very useful. He outlines these five steps in his two books, Unbound and Resisting the Devil. The Keys are 1) Repentance and Faith 2) Forgiveness 3) Renunciation 4) Taking Authority & 5) the Father s Blessing. As you can see these 5 Keys line up very closely with what happens in Confession: it s simply the process of Confession extrapolated for our daily prayer life. It s important that we follow these steps, not because God is a legalist, but because the Devil is; the Devil is in the details literally (he was in fact the first lawyer. Did God really say. ). But it is also related to how God made us: if you re going to do spiritual surgery, it s best to follow the user manual given us by the Lord! The first Key: Repentance and Faith: it s about rekindling and rediscovering our first love for God: we all have or at least know of those moments when one can really feel the presence of God: our First Communion, our wedding, a beautiful sunset, the birth of children, etc. There is no fear in those moments because God is truly there! We repent for not living in that pure love of God and make an act of faith that God is pure love and joy and peace. Second Key: Forgiveness: this is HUGE! We MUST speak a word of forgiveness to those who let fear (or any other negative reality) into our life: In the Name of Jesus I choose to forgive for when he/she allowed fear into my life when. Sometimes we also need to forgive God, or rather repent of blaming God for the bad things that have happened in our lives. Sometimes we need to forgive ourselves and repent of holding ourselves to too high a standard. Third Key: Renunciation: this is where the rubber meets the road. You MUST be VERY SPECIFIC about what type of fear you are renouncing: here s a sample list: Fear of authority, fear of control, fear of losing control, fear of rejection, fear of abandonment, fear of shame, fear of guilt, fear of men/women, fear of the dark, fear of heights, fear of accidents, fear of water, fear of flying, fear of travel, fear of crowds, fear of isolation, etc. etc. You MUST be specific. It s helpful to write it all down first. And then you say (after completing the first two Keys): In the Name of Jesus I renounce the fear of that came to me when. Also there are the lies that go with the fears, especially the fears related to trauma early in life: such as: I will never trust again; I ll always have to do it myself; I won t ever let them know; If I tell the truth, I ll get hurt; No one will ever believe me; I can t trust anyone; I ll never do thus and so ever again; something bad will always happen; It s just a matter of time before something goes wrong; I m no good; I m the cause of others pain; I m a burden; etc. etc.. These negative lies and vows must also be renounced: In the Name of Jesus I renounce the lie/vow of. Fourth and Fifth Keys: Taking Authority and the Father s Blessing: This automatically happens in Confession when the priest absolves our sins in the Name of Christ and His Church and gives us a penance to fill up where our repentance is lacking. Outside of Confession a similar powerful freedom can be experienced when another Christian repeats the renunciations we have just made in the Name of Jesus, In the Name of Jesus I bind off of you what you have renounced and send it to the foot of the Cross and I pray upon you the blessing of courage and freedom (and whatever opposite virtue of what you have renounced) in Jesus Holy Name. Amen! If there is not someone with you to pray in this way, then to simply fill the void that s been left by your renunciations with some good prayer, like the Rosary or Adoration or simply a Hail Mary will suffice in smaller renunciations. Of course, none of this replaces the Sacrament of Confession, but how many of us take our fears and negative attitudes to Confession in this way. I dare say that until I learned about this prayer method I never dreamed of confessing my bad attitude, as if I did not own it! LOL! There are so many things we could confess that we simply skip. It s not just the individual items that Jesus wants to free us from, but from our whole sinful attitude, especially fear. Scripture says 365 times: Be Not Afraid!

7 JMJ WELCOME TO ANACORTES, DOMINIC BLANCHARD! OUR NEW PA FOR FAITH FORMATION! St. Paul summer schedule: 2 nd Sundays at 6PM ONLY. Confession at 5PM. A note about Facility Requests and Other Administrative Items. We are very grateful to have three great Administrative Staff here at St. Mary s: Ruth, Brandee and Travis. They are here, thanks to your generous support of our parish, to keep the doors open, the lights on and the parish calendar working smoothly. Please note that only our Pastoral Staff, that is Ben and Dominic, work on Sundays. The Administrative Staff do NOT work on the weekends, normally. If you have any items of administrative concern, please allow our Admin staff, who already work long hours, to be able to come to Mass to pray with the families on the weekends, and save your administrative concerns during the week. A simple phone call or to the office will suffice and our staff will get back to you the next working day! There are also Maintenance Requisition Forms in the Narthex and outside Travis Office for your use. Thank you for your appreciation for our staff! I cannot be an effective pastor without all of our great staff! Other Summer News: So far, I have been away for both retreat and Priests Days this month. In July 11-14th, just before the Faith on Fire Conference I will be attending a seminar for priests in Denver, and then immediately after FOF I leave for the Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Native American Conference in Rapid City, SD (next year s will be in Tacoma!). Finally, I am looking at some Fr. Straz time in late August for a vacation before September weddings and Religious Ed Classes start up. There will NOT be weekday Mass when I m gone (except when Fr. Jude Eli arrives early for the Friars Feast). Please stay tuned to the Bulletin, Mass Announcements and updates from St. Mary s for changes to the Schedule over the summer! And have a Blessed and safe summer yourselves! - Fr. Straz
