FAST AND ABSTINENCE AND OTHER ACTS OF PENANCE FOR LENT The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2015, on all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light. All the faithful are encouraged, when possible, to participate at Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to undertake spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten education programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is especially recommended. All are also encouraged to participate in Operation Rice Bowl which has aided countless hungry persons here in the Archdiocese as well as throughout our nation and our world. SANCTUARY CANDLES One or both sanctuary candles can burn in memory or the intentions of a loved one. If you wish to do so, please make arrangements by coming to the rectory. 4 JOKE THAT A PRIEST CAN TELL Since they were married Ralph s wife complained that he never put the cap back on the toothpaste. So, on their 25th wedding anniversary, he decided to please her by deciding that, for now on, he would dutifully put the cap back on the toothpaste. After a week passed, however, his wife looked at his suspiciously and asked, How come you stopped brushing your teeth? MASS BOOK The 2015 Mass book is open for Mass intentions. You may request Masses for deceased family and friends. You may also request Masses for special intentions of friends and loved ones who are alive and celebrating special events. Mass intentions may be scheduled at the Rectory, Monday thru Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. PRESIDENT S DAY Please make note...monday, February 16, President s Day is a Public Holiday. Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. The rectory office will be closed for the day. APRENDEREMOS EL PATER NOSTER En las misas de Cuaresma y Pascua vamos a rezar el Padrenuestro en latín. De esta manera, en las misas bilingues, podremos todos cantar la oración principal del cristianismo en la misma idioma, que es el lenguaje de nuestra Madre la Iglesia. También, vamos a cantar en latín el Cordero de Dios. UNA BROMA QUE PUEDE DECIR UN SACERDOTE Desde que se casaron, la esposa de Felix se quejaba de que él nunca pusaba la tapa en la pasta de dientes. Entonces, en su vigésimo quinto aniversario de boda, Felix decidió complacerla y, en adelante, siempre poner la tapa en la pasta de dientes. Pero, después de una semana, su esposa le miró suspechosa, y le dijo: " Cómo es que dejaste de cepillarse los dientes?" MIERCOLES DE CENIZA Acuéredate de que eres polvo, y a polvo has de volver! Esta semana comienza la Cuaresma con la conmemoración del Miércoles de Ceniza, 18 de febrero. Celebraremos misas en inglés a las 8 a.m. y las 12 p.m. y una misa bilingüe a las 7 p.m. Habrá imposición de cenizas en cada misa. Este día todos los católicos que tienen 14 años y más deben abstenerse de comer carne, también en todos los viernes de Cuaresma. Además, los católicos entre las 18 y 59 años son obligados a ayunar, comiendo nada más que una comida fuerte, con dos comidas ligeras si es necesario. UNA HORA SANTA TODOS LOS VIERNES DE CUARESMA Comenzando con el Vía Crucis a las 6:30 p.m. seguido por la Exposición, una homilia, y Bendición de Santísimo Sacramento. 5 WHY WE WILL LEARN TO SING THE PATER NOSTER The apostle Paul writes that For us there is one God, the Father, from whom all things are and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things are and through whom we exist (1 Cor 8:6). Unity among believers was an important theme to St. Paul and to all the apostles. You can imagine that it was a challenge to maintain, since the first generation of Christians came from an array of cultures, languages and religions. It is a challenge for the Church also in our day to be of one mind, sympathetic, loving toward one another, compassionate, humble (1 Pet 3:8). Like the first generation of Christians, Catholics in the United States come from many different cultures, nations, ethnic backgrounds and languages. Historically, Catholicism in our country grew to become the single largest religion because of the massive immigration of Catholics. Today, the number of Catholics continues to grow principally because of immigration from Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries. While we ought to respect our diversity and honor our differences, it is important that we celebrate our unity as brothers and sisters in Christ, in communion with each other as in the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. The most privileged and public place in which we express and fortify our catholic unity is in the celebration of the liturgy. It is important, then, from time to time, that we come together as the one people we are in a common celebration, especially at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday, and the celebration of certain Sacraments within Mass, such as First Communion, Confirmation and the Anointing of the Sick. As a practical matter, it is also necessary to come together for bilingual and multi-cultural celebrations on holy days of obligation in order to accommodate parishioners work schedule without multiplying liturgies and wearing out the pastor. In the liturgies which unite our English and Spanish speaking parishioners we include music and prayers from both languages. At the same time, as an expression of our oneness in Christ, it would be advantageous to be able to join in saying at least some of the prayers in Latin, a language which is common to all of us (even if we don t speak it) as the language of holy Mother Church. Such is not only the opinion of your pastor and the members of your parish Liturgy Committee, but of the Church herself, as expressed in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, number 41: Since the faithful from different countries come together ever more frequently, it is desirable that they know how to sing together at least some parts of the Ordinary of the Mass in Latin, especially the Profession of Faith and the Lord s Prayer, according to the simpler settings. In response to this pastoral need, during the seasons of Lent and Easter we will sing the Our Father and the Lamb of God in Latin. Just like it took some time to get used to the new English translation of the Mass, so it will take some time for us as a congregation to learn to sing the Pater Noster and the Agnus Dei. The chants we will use, however, are simple and are included in the Roman Missal, and with time, I believe, we will learn them well, just like many of you have learned the hymns in Latin for Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Think how proud you will be when you go to Rome, or Lourdes, or Fatima, and you are able to join with your fellow Catholics from all parts of the world in singing the Lord s Prayer in Latin! Closer to home, how beautiful it will be for all of us, as one parish, to sing together in the ancient language of our Mother, the Church, the prayer which Jesus gave us as the model of all prayer. And so, Laudemus Deum! ( let us praise God ). Et benedicat vos omnipotens Deus. Father Scott
