Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. Isaiah 60:1 TODAY S READINGS First Reading Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The LORD shines upon you and the glory of the Lord appears over you (Isaiah 60:1-6). Psalm Lord, every nation on earth will adore you (Psalm 72). Second Reading The mystery has been made known that the Gentiles are coheirs, copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6). THE LIVES OF SAINTS ST. RAYMOND OF PENYAFORT (1175/ ) A renowned expert in canon and civil law. St. Raymond also worked assiduously for the formation of priests and the evangelization of Jews and Muslims. He encouraged missionaries to learn Arabic and to study the Koran in order to enter into dialogue with Islam. Born at Penyafort, near Barcelona, Spain, sometime between 1175 and 1180, he took his early studies at the cathedral school in Barcelona and then proceeded to Bologna, where he became a diocesan priest, but after coming into contact with the newly founded Order of Preachers, he joined the Dominicans in He composed a Summa of canon law with a pastoral orientation and was later called to Rome by Pope Gregory IX to be the papal penitentiary and to edit the Decretals issued by master General of the Dominican Order, succeeding Jordan of Saxony in that post. He resigned two years later and returned to Spain. For the rest of his life Raymond dedicated himself to the direction of souls as a confessor and in the promotion of evangelization among the Jews and Muslims of North Africa. He encouraged Thomas Aquinas to write the Summa contra Gentiles and at the request of St. Peter Nolasco he drafted the Rule for the Mercerdarians, an order founded for the redemption of Christian captives held by the Muslims in North Africa. 4 The Announcement of Easter and the Moveable Feasts On the Epiphany of the Lord, after the singing of the Gospel, a Deacon or cantor, in keeping with an ancient practice of Holy Church, announces from the ambo the moveable feasts of the current year according to this formula: Know, dear brethren, (brothers and sisters,) that, as we have rejoiced at the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, so by leave of God s mercy we announce to you also the joy of his Resurrection, who is our Savior. On the 10 th day of February will fall Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of the fast of the most sacred Lenten season. On the 27 th day of March you will celebrate with joy Easter Day, the Paschal feast of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the 5 th day of May will be the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the 15 th day of May, the feast of Pentecost. On the 29 th day of May, the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. We as marchers will bring our prayers and the pro-life message to our nation s capitol.
