3 welcome! Welcome to Saint Cecilia Parish, a Roman Catholic community that gathers day by day, week by week, to know and make known the grace of God. By means of this abundant grace, we enjoy a diverse and close- knit parish family young, old, rich, poor, of various ethnic origins and differing backgrounds. From our extraordinary music program to a growing children s faith formation program; from the various liturgical ministries to the many opportunities for social outreach that the parish provides, Saint Cecilia is a vibrant community of faith, centered on prayer and worship that tries to keep the Gospel close to heart and to live by Jesus teachings. Saint Cecilia Parish was established in At that time the Back Bay section of Boston along Commonwealth Avenue and Beacon Street was the residential section of the Yankee aristocracy. The maids ( Irish working out girls ) and coachmen who served these residents had long requested a church of their own. When Archbishop Williams granted their request out of their meager earnings. The church was dedicated on April 22, Its architecture is Romanesque, XII Century Norman. The main altar, notable for its massive simplicity, was carved from a single block of white Carrara marble. The painting in the center reredos is a reproduction of da Vinci s The Last Supper, and the dome above is an array of 24K gold rosettes. For the sixtieth anniversary celebration in 1954, a massive renovation project was under-taken. During this renovation, a statue of Pope Saint Pius X (canonized that same year) was imported from Italy and placed on the right side of the sanctuary. Above the statue are paintings from Pius life. On the left side is a statue of Saint Patrick, principal patron of the Archdiocese of Boston, and above it are three scenes from his life. Fourteen circular and sixteen square panels adorn the nave and arches of the church. The square panels are decorated with the symbols of Our Lady taken from the Litany of Loreto and the circular ones with symbols taken from the lives of the apostles. The great window of the Assumption framed by the two oak cases of the organ was installed in 1954 (the Marian Year) in spaces originally designed for windows but not until then used. The original organ of 24 stops was built in 1902 by the Hutchings- Votey Organ Company, Opus 1465, and was rebuilt in 1954 with 32 stops. In 1998, Timothy Smith and Theodore Gilbert began a massive reconstruction of the organ. The current Smith & Gilbert Organ of 4 manuals, 50 ranks, and 2,926 pipes was dedicated on the Feast of Saint Cecilia, November 22, Today we are experiencing something of an awakening within these old walls. We recently completed a major renovation, our numbers are increasing, and we continue to grow in our commitment to issues of peace, justice, and service to our neighbors, both near and far. We ve been right here on Belvidere Street, in the same building for 125 years, but that does not mean that life here is stale, stagnant, or even predictable. We are proud to be entrusted with the legacy of Saint Cecilia Parish, where everything is the same, yet always changing; where we honor tradition while embracing the future; where God s love makes all things new.

The sixth annual social justice event for all members of the Archdiocese of Boston will be held on Saturday, October 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Pastoral Center in Braintree. Pope Francis has proclaimed his deep commitment to Catholic Social Teaching and the Social Ministry of the Church and we have witnessed time and again how the Holy Father lives out these beliefs. We too are called to deepen our commitment to social justice through faithful service in our local parishes. The day will begin with a Mass celebrated by Cardinal Seán at which the Archdiocesan Black Catholic Choir will provide music. There will be a keynote address by Rev. J. Bryan Hehir, Archdiocesan Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Services, on "The Joy of the Gospel." Saint Cecilia Parish will be represented by three mem-bers of our community Susan Donnelly, Mark Lippolt, and Tom Ash who will be participating in a panel discussion: "Social Justice A Priority in our Parishes." 7 FAITH AND THE BALLOT The Ecumenical Advocacy Coalition invites the Saint educational forums on the four questions that will appear on the November 4th ballot. Come hear what each question proposes on gas tax, recycling, casinos, and sick time for employees. At each forum there will four ballot questions, a brief presentation with ideas about how we might think theologically about the ballot questions, and a facilitated ecumenical table discussion. The primary objective at these forums is one of educa-tion, not advocacy. Participants will be invited to share their ideas through social media, using the hashtag: #faithandballot. The Boston forum will take place on Wednesday, October 22 at Old South Church from 6:30 8:30 p.m. If you would like to register to attend or to volunteer to help facilitate the table discussions, please visit The event is free of charge, but if you would like to at-tend please be sure to register on- line. This is a wonder-ful opportunity to consider, explore, and share how your help us care for the poor! At least a few times each week, homeless men and member after Mass looking for something to eat or a donation. While we do sometimes give out small amounts of money, we prefer to offer people a gift card to a local supermarket, CVS, Dunkin' Donuts, or fast food establishment. You have always responded generously to our appeal for gift cards. but once again, we are in need of having our supply replenished. If you are interested in helping out in this way, simply pur-chase a gift card and drop it in the collection basket at Mass or give the card to a staff person. While all gift cards are appreciated, at this point in time, gift cards to Shaw's and CVS would be most helpful. We are very appreciative of your assistance as we attempt to offer aid to our struggling brothers and sisters. Thank you. 8 Dear Friends, A Letter from the Vice-Chair of the Parish Pastoral Council I am writing on behalf of the Pastoral Parish Council (PPC) to provide you with an update of our work. While we do not meet formally in the summer the PPC did participate in a full day retreat in July and we began our regular plan to focus our efforts in this coming year. On July 17 the PPC, both outgoing and incoming members, gathered at Glastonbury Abbey in Hingham for a full day retreat. It was a great way to thank outgoing members for their service and onboard our new members who were starting their terms with us. The primary focus of the day was to review all of the survey responses we of the Parish to support to Father John in building a loving and caring community that lives out the message of the Gospels. In coming away from this retreat we outlined the following work: 1) summarizing the survey results for publication to the Parish community, 2) trending responses to action items to guide our work in this coming year and 3) organizing the work into an action plan. We began acting on this work at our September and October meetings and I wanted to share the current status of this work with you as outlined below: 1. Summarizing Results: A subcommittee has drafted an initial summary report of the survey results. This summary report outlines summative data for most likert scale questions so you can get a big picture sense of the responses. We will not be sharing open- ended comments verbatim; rather, we will be trending out common themes/messages. Supplying all of that information would result in a very hefty document. Please know that these comments were very informative and helpful in creating more well- informed conclusions as to what is happening at Saint Cecilia Parish. So thank you again to so many of you who took the time to respond November 5 meeting. 2. Trending Responses: experience and the many opportunities available to participate in parish life at Saint Cecilia. There were three areas that stood out that we feel will help to improve the overall experience and parish life and it is upon these areas that we plan to focus and organize our work this year. These three areas are as follows: Communication Visibility of the PPC and communicating the work Increased opportunities to be educated and participate in social justice issues, particularly to those living in poverty and in need 3. Organizing the Work for Action: We are currently in the process of drafting an action plan to organize and guide this work that we will begin reviewing at our November meeting. Details of this plan will be work further with you and to gather additional input. Stay tuned for further details. that we are fortunate to belong to such a lively, dynamic and caring Parish community. We look forward to working with Father John, and you, to make it even better. Fred recently moved to Foxboro and thought he would be able to continue his commitments at Saint Cecilia Parish; however, he has realized that this is not possible. While short- lived, Fred s participation was appreciated and he will be missed as both a PPC member and parishioner. Yours in spirit, Matthew Gallup Vice- Chair, PPC

9 THE WOMEN'S LUNCH PLACE ANNUAL FUNDRAISER day shelter on Newbury Street will be held on Friday, October 24 at the Fairmont Copley Plaza with a cocktail reception at 6:00, followed by dinner and a live auction at 7:00. If you would like to join the Saint Cecilia table at this event, please e- mail Mark Lippolt at mlippolt@hammondre.com. Tickets are $300 each. The WLP is also looking for folks who would like to purchase full tables or serve as a table captain. Tutoring at nativity prep School has recently begun and our friends at Nativity Prep in Jamaica Plain ( are looking for tutors for their evening study program. Nativity Prep is a tuition- free, Jesuit middle school serving boys of all faiths from low- income families residing in Boston. Nativity has a very impressive track record promoting the intellectual, spiritual, social, and physical growth that inspires boys from Boston to become men for others. Following supper, the boys have required evening study three nights a week: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Saint Cecilia parishioners have generously provided dinners for the group of four times per semester, as well as a roster of tutors who work one- on- one with the boys. This year, Nativity is hoping to have a group of tutors who are able to make the commitment to tutor one evening a week through-out the majority of the semester. Study begins around 6:00 p.m. and lasts until 8:00. If you would like to learn more about the tutoring opportunities or if you would like to help us provide dinner, please e- mail Susan Donnelly at susan_donnelly@harvard.edu. Thank you! another way to help catholic charities For those of you who are Amazon.com users, we have created a "Wish List" on the site which will enable you to order much- needed items for the Catholic Charities food pantry in Dorchester and have them delivered di-rectly. The list name is "Saint Cecilia/Catholic Charities Food Pantry" and you will be able to choose from four bulk items to donate. Using this method of providing for the pantry may also make it easier for you to track your tax- deductible donations. If you have any questions, please Mark Lippolt at mlippolt@hammondre.com. DONE TIME? Men who have been incarcerated are invited to join the Prison & After group which is designed to provide participants with a sense of welcome and support. The meetings are held on Monday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 in the Parish Pastoral Center. We will begin with a group session followed by a simple meal. 10 By TERRANCE W. KLEIN On Bearing Fruit One would think that being a cloistered Carmelite nun, vowed to poverty, chastity and obedi-ence, and living a life of prayer and silence would be enough, but Thérèse of Lisieux was genuinely uneasy one day in prayer. She be- the late 19th century, that wasn t a typical expression of piety, even for a religious. This was long before the Second Vatican Council urged individuals to read Scripture. What was she looking for? Describing the day, she wrote, To be your Spouse, O Jesus, to be a Carmelite, by my union with you to be the mother of souls, should con-tent me...yet it does not. Try to look beyond the patina of piety that so quickly covers our saints. We expect them to be exuberant, unmeasured, but listen to the genuine anguish, which the young woman experienced. I feel in myself other vocations I feel myself called to be a soldier, priest, apostle, doctor of the church, martyr. Finally, I feel the need, the desire to perform all the most heroic deeds for you, Jesus. Thérèse had struggled to become a nun. Desiring to en-ter Carmel while still an adolescent, she had been told to wait. Now, as a professed religious, was she having second thoughts? Better to write additional thoughts, because Thérèse wasn t turning back. She was going forward. Plato taught that the good was diffusive. Put another way, it s in the very nature of the good to grow, to spread, to be shared. Jesus teaches the same with his parable of the vineyard. Simply to employ the simile is to insist that our lives must bear fruit, must make a dif-ference. It s not enough to be religious, to practice a faith. Indeed, without fruitfulness, even that may be a sign of sterility, a way of closing ourselves to the human adven-ture. Pope Francis opened Evangelii Gaudium ( The Joy of the Gospel ), his apostolic exhortation, with this very warning. The great danger in today s world, pervaded as it is by con-sumerism, is the desolation and anguish born of a complacent yet covetous heart, the feverish pursuit of frivolous pleasures, and a blunted conscience. When-ever our interior life becomes caught up in its own interests and concerns, there is no longer room for others, no place for the poor. God s voice is no longer heard, the quiet joy of his love is no longer felt, and the desire to do good fades. This is a very real danger for believers too. Many fall prey to it, and end up resent-ful, angry and listless. That is no - us, nor is it the life in the Spirit which has its source in the heart of the risen Christ ( 2). Thérèse was struggling with a fundamental Gospel question, one that, she understood, her profession as a religious didn t forestall. Thérèse was asking whether her life was fruitful. Here are some questions to pose in pondering our own answer to the same question. Do you make others smile? Seems trivial, but we smile when we are happy, when we move even slightly toward grimacing in pain can smile, when the right person is with her. Do you make anyone smile? Does someone brighten when you approach? Remember Pope Francis title: "The Joy of the Gospel." Does someone come to you with cares? Numbers don t count in any of these categories. It s not how many anyone share his or her real problems with you? Come to you for advice? Count upon your sympathetic ear? Do you touch the poor? Anything counts here, but don t discount actual physical contact. Have you ever touched a poor person in response to his or her need? Do you encounter anyone who is poor? Do you somehow respond to the needs of the poor, even if only by donation and prayer? 10

11 Do you see suffering? It suffuses the world. Do you see any of it? Does someone else s physical pain or heart-break touch your life? Do you feel compelled to share yourself? So much counts here: your ideas, your time, your prayer, your muscles, even your recipes. When we share ourselves, as opposed to implementing our agendas, we forget whose idea wins, how much time is spent. We don t even notice that we are praying for another. What s not on the list? Your job, the work that you do to earn your keep. Plumber or brain surgeon, bishop or ac-countant: we re all called to work for each other. Is one task more important than another? Depends on whether your toilet is backed up. What you mustn t do is to presume that you bear fruit simply because your job is important. Or conversely, that you aren t bearing fruit because you don t have a job, one which the world considers important, or because you don t have a job at all. Corinthians, in which he describes various ministries in the church. But, considering the mystical Body of the Church, I had not recognized myself in any of the mem-bers described by St. Paul, or rather, I wanted to recog-nize myself in all. But then Charity gave me the key to my vocation. I understood that if the Church has a body composed of different members, the noblest and most necessary of all the members would not be lacking to her. I understood that the Church has a heart, and that this heart burns with Love. I understood that Love alone makes its members act, that if this Love were to be extinguished, the Apostles would no longer preach the Gospel, the Martyrs would refuse to shed their blood... I understood that Love embraces all voca-tions, that Love is all things, that it embraces all times and all places... in a word, that it is eternal! What Thérèse wrote next could be dismissed as the simpering of sentimental piety. Then in the ex-cess of my delirious joy, I cried out: O Jesus, my Love, at last I have found my vocation, my vocation is Love! It could be so discounted, until one con-siders the fruit born of her silent life, one that end-ed in the most painful of deaths, from tuberculosis. Being fruitful isn t about being religious. It isn t about doing something important. It s a way of living: what-ever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gra-cious (Phil 4:9). The good is diffusive. It can t help but to share itself.
