World Mission Sunday gathers support for the pastoral and evangelizing programs and needs of more than 1,150 mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and remote regions of Latin America. The funds gathered on World Mission Sunday are distributed in the Holy Father's name by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith a Pontifical Mission Society. For more information, please visit Evening Prayer this Thursday We will gather to pray Vespers this Thursday at six-thirty in commemoration of the fiftieth Anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. 4 pie in the sky Starting at this weekend's liturgies, Saint Cecilia volunteer pie sellers will be available to take your orders for Thanksgiving pies to benefit one of our non-profit partner agencies, Community Servings. Pie in the Sky fosters community spirit and engages the public in the mission of Community Servings Massachusetts' free, home-delivered meals and nutrition program for the critically ill. Each November, Boston's best restaurants, bakeries, caterers, and hotels donate thousands of pies that over 600 volunteers then sell to family, friends and colleagues. Each pie costs $25, providing a week's worth of hearty home-delivered meals to a Community Servings' client. Even if you will be out of town for Thanksgiving, you can help by purchasing a pie and donating it to a Community Servings' client or you can buy a pie that will be served by parishioners on Thanksgiving Day at Morville House in the Fenway or in our Parish Hall for guests of the Pine Street Inn. For more information, please contact Mark Lippolt at mlippolt@hammondre. com. Altar server training We will be training new altar servers next Saturday morning, October 27, at eight-thirty and Saturday morning, November 3, at ten o'clock. This important ministry is open to children in third grade or older. We already have eight girls and boys signed-up and would love to have more. If your child would like to be trained to be an altar server, please contact Scott at smacdonald@stceciliaboston.org. christmas in bridgewater Bridgewater State Hospital is a psychiatric prison hospital where 350 men with very serious mental illnesses live some for a very short period of evaluation and some for a lifetime. Though it is a hospital, it is also very much a prison complete with barbed wire, correction officers and prison food. It can be one of the saddest, dreariest places on earth during the holiday season. You can help to change that. The Catholic Chaplain, Peg Newman, is a parishioner here at Saint Cecilia and she is collecting the following items to give to the men at Christmas time: a fun event for a worthy cause ANNUAL SPAGHETTI DINNER TO BENEFIT THE WOMEN'S LUNCH PLACE Our friends at The Women's Lunch Place will be holding their Annual Spaghetti Dinner on Friday, October 26. The Spaghetti Dinner is The Women's Lunch Place's signature fall event. The event is dedicated to raising critical funds that support the daily operations of the organization. Last year more than $300,000 was raised to support the WLP's meals and advocacy programs. Saint Cecilia parishioners who volunteer in the shelter monthly will be one of six groups honored at this year's event. Tickets for the event, which takes place at the Copley Fairmont Hotel, are $250 each. If you're interested in joining the Saint Cecilia table at this event, please contact Mark Lippolt at mlippolt@hammondre.com. Shampoo (up to 15-ounces) Plain White Envelopes both long and short Toothpaste (4 to 6-ounces) White Lined Pads of Paper (8.5 x 11 no wire) These are the only items the Department of Corrections will allow the men to receive. They will put the items to good use, but more important, they will know that they are being thought of and cared about. Your gift will be an expression of God s love. If you are able to help, please bring your gift to church and leave it in the plastic bin in the narthex that is labeled Bridgewater State Hospital. Please do not wrap your gifts. Please contact Peg if you would like information on volunteer opportunities in Bridgewater (about an hour south of Boston) at (508) or by , peg_ newman@msn.com. In truth I tell you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me. Matthew 25:40 4

5 Don't Vote for the 'Better Catholic' Only God can determine who is the "good Catholic" By JAMES MARTIN, SJ Last night's spirited Vice-Presidential debate was billed, in some quarters, as a "Catholic smackdown." The debate moderator, Martha Raddatz, made specific note of that reality, when she called the debate "historic," as it was the first time that both candidates for vice president were in case you've been living under a secular rock Catholic. As our blogger Michael O'Loughlin noted, however, Raddatz' "Catholic question" focused mainly on abortion. To me, it was not a surprising pivot, as many journalists tend to reduce all of Catholicism to a single issue. For his part, Congressman Ryan identify himself as strongly pro-life (though his reference to his daughter as "Bean" seemed oddly labored), dilated on what he perceived as threats to religious liberty and elaborated on the Romney administration's opposition to abortion, with Gov. Romney's (somewhat surprising to many pro-lifers) exceptions for rape, incest and threats to the life of the mother. Vice President Biden, in turn, stated that his religion "defines who I am," and spoke about his love of Catholic social teaching, his personal opposition to abortion and his unwillingness to "impose" that belief on others (though I've always found that odd, too we regularly "impose" our beliefs on others whenever we legislate.) By the way, listeners may have been flummoxed by the Vice President's offhand reference to de fide doctrines of the church, which simply refers to the most basic Catholic beliefs, which cannot be denied by any Catholic in good standing. (Think, for example, of what is contained in the Creed.) Ironically, this was such an abstruse theological reference that the official transcripton CNN simply wrote "inaudible." (If they've changed it already, that means that they read this blog.) Next week's issue of America will feature an exclusive interview with both vice-presidential candidates on a variety of questions, including their Catholic beliefs. But it would be a mistake to try to vote for the "better Catholic." Both Ryan and Biden are obviously serious about their Catholicism. Can anyone doubt that? They also offer a kind of Rorschach test for U.S. Catholic voters. Ryan is a Catholic who is clearly opposed to abortion and not so clearly in support of programs that would directly help the poor. Biden is not so clearly opposed to abortion and clearly in support of programs that would directly help the poor. They represent, in a sense, two distinct types of "Catholicisms" alive in our country today. It's a big church, as an elderly Jesuit I know likes to say. Their commentary last night (and beforehand) also points out that no one party fully embraces the entirety of Catholic teaching. And for those of you who would say that abortion is the only "intrinsic evil" that is at issue in this campaign, I would point you to Blessed (Article continues on page 8) 5

7 an evening with Father Greg Boyle, S.J. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26 7:00 P.M. SAINT CECILIA CHURCH Father Greg is the author of Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion. He will share his reflections on community and the sacredness of life through the lens of Ignatian spirituality, drawn from more than 20 years of work with formerly gang-involved and recently incarcerated men and women in L.A. Father Boyle reminds us all that every single child and youth is a part of God s jurisdiction and when they know that we are seeing them as God does, they are capable of great things. Father Boyle is a national treasure. MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN PRESIDENT CHILDREN S DEFENSE FUND

8 (Continued from page 5) John Paul II's great encyclical Vertitatis Splendor, in which he speaks of a great many intrinsic evils, many of them often overlooked today, including "whatever is offensive to human dignity, such as subhuman living conditions, arbitrary imprisonment, deportation, slavery, prostitution and trafficking in women and children; degrading conditions of work which treat labourers as mere instruments of profit." My point here, though, is not to wade into the murky waters of politics, which I try to avoid, and leave to people more knowledgeable than me. Rather, it's to point out the impossibility of ascertaining who is the "better Catholic," based on public pronouncements. Yes, vote for the candidate(s) whose policies and viewpoints and voting record are in conformity with the Gospels, in accord with Christian values and in concert with Catholic church teaching. But it is impossible to look within a person's soul and judge who is the "better Catholic," simply based on what a person says during a campaign, much less a heated debate. As St. Ignatius Loyola noted, "Love shows itself more in deeds than words." And while voting records are an important indicator of a person's convictions and are in fact a "deed," they do not, by themselves, make for a "good Catholic." There are other deeds and even words that will always remain hidden from public view. You could be the most ardent pro-lifer and still be unkind to your family, uncharitable to the poor, mean-spirited to co-workers and harbor a hateful attitude towards humankind. Is that a "good Catholic"? You could be the most ardent advocate for the poor, and still be mendacious, thieving, dishonest and deceitful. Needless to say, I'm not talking about any candidate here! That's why when a Catholic candidate speaks about his or her faith, it's more important for voters to concentrate on their policies, rather than trying to worm their way into the person's soul. Only God can determine who is the "good Catholic," and no matter how many personal stories a person may tell about a conversion experience, going to daily Mass as a child, or the effect of an inspirational priest or plucky sister in their lives, the question of who is the "better Catholic" cannot be determined by any voter, but by God alone. This article first appeared in the America Magazine blog, "In All Things" on October 12, catholic charities' Food pantry We are looking for parishioners to help sort and bag donated groceries at Catholic Charities' food pantry at the Yawkey Center/Haitian Multi-Service Center in Dorchester. Volunteers who are over the age of ten are needed to spend three or four hours starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 10. This opportunity can accommodate up to twelve volunteers. As you know, for almost four years parishioners at Saint Cecilia, especially children in our Faith Formation Program, have been providing much-needed donations to this food pantry. Every other Sunday morning, volunteers drive our donations, along with items we pick up from Whole Foods Market Symphony and Trader Joe's in Hanover, to the food pantry. This new opportunity will give parishioners insight into the great work done by Catholic Charities. If you would like to volunteer, please Mark Lippolt at mlippolt@hammondre.com. get involved & immerse yourself Saint Cecilia young adult parishioners are invited to join in a trip to Ecuador from November working with the volunteers of Rostro de Cristo. This is a great opportunity for young people from our parish to visit, work and pray in conjunction with the volunteers and members of the local community of Guayaquil. This retreat provides an opportunity to live out the Gospel, deepen our understanding of the reality of a developing country, and to make a difference by committing to service, faith and social justice. Time is limited and space is too. For more information, please contact Ros Kane at roskane@comcast.net or Chris Callanan at ccallanan@ smcattorneys.com or visit rostrodecristo.org. for your consideration We appreciate the thoughtfulness of parishioners who have made bequests to the parish. These gifts help us build a solid foundation for future generations. If you have already made provisions in your will for our parish, please advise either Father John or Mark Donohoe at the parish office so that we can insure the your wishes are carried out as you intend. 8
