3 THE STOR S GE Dear Friends, Guests, arishioners, consistent theme, or maybe principle, that runs through, or guides me in, these pages, and in many ways my preaching, is how our Catholic faith, our faith in God, joins up with culture and the world in which we live. quick example today we mark the end of the civic calendar year... and in the life of the Church we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family... on the next day we make the beginning of a new year... liturgically we observe the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God... Culturally... people have been observing the end of the year... and the beginning of another for a long me... long before Chris anity began. Take your pick from among cultures... east/west, northern or southern hemisphere. The Church has frequently bumped up against culture... and s ll does. That bumping has enabled change good and bad. Then and now! The sweep of history chronicles it... The struggles existed from the earliest days of the postles as they set out to engage fellow Jews... and Gen les. eter and aul engaged the men of Rome and thens... Barbarians crushed the city gates... Luther preached among the Germans... The Enlightenment shone across Europe and beyond... Faith and reason fought against each other... Science always knew be er... sort of... In our own day and age people s ll ba le things... What is marriage? When does life begin? When does it end? Who is my neighbor? Is it a sin to...? Our leaders and Catechism encourage and guide us. long the journey what sustains? What keeps us going? Clearly the Lord is in charge. We are not! s we end the year, we look back. We can look back with gra tude... yes... We can look back with sadness... yes. We can look back with amazement... We can look forward the same way! n cipa ng good things and dreaming of gra tude... things happen... we become sad. Will we wonder at new... inven ons, policies, laws, whatever? It remains for us to do the next right thing. What sustains? Remaining faithful, steady as she goes, doing the next right thing... the good thing... staying in the game... keep on learning... no ma er how old you get! I d like to add one more thing that helps. Rest and recovery are so vital to exercising. nyone who exercises or plans to, must know the value of rest and recovery. It applies to living too. The speed at which we drive, walk, talk, shop needs some mes to be monitored. We set speed limits for a good reason! Rest cannot be forced! Recovery cannot be forced! day of rest is a day of recovery... at least once a week! The day of rest is a day to connect... with the Lord and with others... like at Mass... We have a day of rest weekly Some mes it s easier to know the right thing to do when I am rested! It s real hard to know and do the right thing when I am rushed... unless I have prac ced, prac ced, prac ced doing the right thing... Keeping distrac ons to a minimum is a challenge nowadays. Do you know how many people are vying for your a en on? Do I vie for a en on too much? How much is enough? Thank God, God knows! Our culture is very busy... Our faith seeks to teach us to slow down and listen... to the Lord... each other... our own hearts. There can be clashes! You be er believe it! Let me conclude here by sharing a poignant moment from our Christmas Masses. Many of you were there. er communion at each Mass, we sang Silent Night... song that is perhaps the most loved and well known... Just about everyone sang... The emo on was palpable! You could feel it! What? The silence... the night... the longing... the hope... Our culture has so much to offer... so much good... but a lot of craziness too! God help us to know the difference! I am convinced our Catholic faith teaches us that difference. lease accept one of the Call to Joy books by Ma hew Kelly at the doors of the church. It s a small gi for you and your family that can have a big impact in this coming New Year! Thank you again to all who have made this Christmas so beau ful, inside and out, up and down and all around, in our hearts and lives! Happy New Year! God bless you and stay strong, Thank you for the many though ul cards, prayers, gi s, cookies and good wishes you made to me personally. I am very grateful. Thank you for your support to the health and re rement collec on for priests on Christmas. Christmas is s ll with us! The culture has grown weary... we have not... lease join us for Lessons and Carols, January 5 in the evening... musical evening with the Choir to tell the story of Christmas in song and scripture.

6 D T H F J, M J Dear Friends in Christ, Do you experience the post- Christmas let down? We run ourselves ragged buying gifts, going to parties, cooking and baking, etc. for a month, and then in a frenzy of torn wrapping paper and dirty dishes BM Christmas is done and over. However, as always, God calls us to a much greater level of joy than that. Of all the many great feasts of the liturgical year, two of them stand out as particularly joyful. Christmas, like Easter, is so joyful that it can t be fit into one day, in fact both are their own liturgical seasons! s we move from the anticipatory season of dvent into the great Christmas season, let us continue to celebrate that the Word of God has been made flesh! Within this season are several great feasts that mark important figures and events in the life of Our Lord and the faith as we know it today. On December 26 th we celebrate the feast day of St. Stephen, the first martyr for the faith, who we read about in the cts of the postles. On the 27 th, St. John, postle and Evangelist is celebrated. John, who was known as the Beloved Disciple wrote the fourth Gospel, which has an extraordinarily deep theological understanding even beyond the other Gospels. On the 28 th, we celebrate the feast of the Holy Innocents, the children whom King Herrod, in a fit of jealous rage, had murdered in his attempt to kill the newborn King of the Jews to keep his own kingdom intact. Recently, one of the students in my religious education class asked why Catholics give so much attention to the Virgin Mary while seemingly ignoring St. Joseph! lthough this student is mistaken (St. Joseph has two feast days, March 19 and May 1), it s a good question as it does seem that St. Joseph doesn t get enough credit. On December 31 st we mark the great celebration of the Holy Family. Without St. Joseph s great love and protection for Mary and Jesus, our salvation would not have been possible. Imagine the love in that household! January 1 st is the Feast of Mary, Mother of God. She, who through her unmatched faith, bore the Savior of the world while remaining a virgin and who while standing at the foot of the Cross became our Mother as well. Though it is not a Holy Day of Obligation this year, we should never feel obliged to give our Mother the love she deserves. lease join us for Mass at 10M on Monday January 1 st and keep the joy of Christmas day burning throughout the season! Yours in the Lord s Service, Brian Cullen VIRTUS TRINING Wednesday, January 10th 700 M ll are welcome to attend even if you are not a volunteer in the parish. rotecting God s Children is an awareness program open to all persons and mandated by the rchdiocese of Boston for all volunteers.
