3 THE STOR S GE Dear parishioners, The devasta ng hurricane Harvey s ll lingers near the Texas Gulf coast area as it begins to head deeper inland. Record rains have fallen, death and destruc on have touched millions and the recovery will take years! Cardinal Sean has authorized a second collec on to help with that recovery. We will take up that collec on the weekend, September 16/17, as there are second collec ons scheduled the next two weekends. One for Catholic University of merica this weekend and September 9/10, there will be a special collec on - along with a priest visi ng - on behalf of the Society of the ropaga on of the Faith s annual request for support. I am not unfamiliar with hurricane evacua ons! I lived in New Orleans for a few years. There were several hurricanes during my me there. None however required mandatory evacua ons but it was always recommended. I rode out most but once when I needed to depart on a trip, I found myself in the midst of an evacua on The fear, confusion, anxiety and danger were very much present! Moving hundreds of thousands of people and even millions is prac cally impossible. Managing these events as best you can is the only response! lease be as generous as you can! God bless you! Today is the memorial of a principal patron of mine. The Church remembers this day St. ope Gregory the Great who died in 604. He is arguably one of the most qualified and perhaps the best ope we have had! He combined pastoral sensi vity, skill and unmistakable administra ve acumen! He is the author of the Regula astoralis, The astoral Rule. This small book sought to help regular clergy in the way the Regula of St. Benedict sought to help monks. The Regula astoralis shaped the way the Church trained priests for almost a thousand years! While in the seminary I was somehow a racted to this interes ng volume and the man who wrote it. I remain fascinated, especially now, as I hold the office of pastor in the Church. I commend to your prayers our current ope, Cardinal Sean and all who hold office in the Church those to whom responsibility has been entrusted. What is that responsibility? In short the care of souls That care is shown in the exercise of ministry the reaching explaining the Word of God and showing how it fits into our very contemporary lives! The raying at Mass and all the other Sacraments, at the Hours of the day, at peoples bedsides in the hospitals, nursing homes, in prisons, at barbecues, at table, in classrooms and all along the way Care of souls is also manifested in Leadership. The Church calls the priest to lead by example in witness to the faith and in the building up of the community the Church itself. So much of leadership is just showing up being there at the right me, even the wrong me being there ma ers. That segues nicely into a powerful story about a priest from the rchdiocese of Oklahoma City who is to be named a saint on September 23. fellow priest friend reminded me of the event. The Rev. Stanley Rother was martyred in 1981 in Guatemala. He was a priest of the rchdiocese of Oklahoma City who responded to the need for priests in La n merica. His love for God and the Church and his commitment to the care of souls helped so many people! He has become the first na ve born merican priest to be designated a martyr. I invite you to look him up on the internet <h ps//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/stanley_rother> His story will not make headless or be Breaking News His life and ministry however made a big difference in peoples lives So look him up... and please pray for voca ons and encourage those who hear or think they hear the call! Thank you for your support to the SM Fathers last weekend. You gave approximately $2,200 for their work. We are s ll coun ng as the 600 Mass is s ll to be tallied. Thank you as well for all your support to Fr. Joseph. lease help pass the word about the new Sunday Mass schedule 430 Saturday and 1000 Sunday Morning and 600 pm Sunday evening! God bless you and stay strong, Fr. Linehan

6 S 2-3 From the astoral ssistant Dear Friends in Christ, T -S S I O WESTWOOD FRMERS MRKET In today s second reading, Saint aul tells us Do not conform yourselves to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. Such is the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that our minds as well as our hearts our whole lives can be transformed, thanks be to God! This past weekend, Saint John s Seminary in Brighton welcomed in a new batch of men who will devote themselves en rely to discerning the will of God in their lives, specifically if the quiet, peaceful but insistent whispering they hear is indeed God calling them to serve the Church as a priest. I ask that you join me in praying for the men around the world who have answered the Lord s invita on to them and made a courageous step. In today s world, it is counter cultural to be a Chris an, to take up our cross and follow Jesus as He commands us in this week s Gospel. The men discerning and studying for the priesthood are in a very special way making a step to not conform themselves to this present age. s such, they need our prayers to resist the tempta ons that the devil li ers throughout the world so they might be transformed into priests of Jesus Christ. phrase I ve o en heard is voca ons are everyone s business. This means a few things. One, as I men oned in a recent bulle n column, we all have a voca on and it is our job to ask God what specifically our voca on is. This phrase also means that voca ons to the priesthood and religious life don t come out of a vacuum. There are prac cal things we can do to encourage and foster voca ons. First, obviously, we need to pray for the men who have already accepted the call, but also to beg the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into the vineyard (Ma hew 938). s Father Linehan talked about in a recent column, we also need to encourage men to consider that God might well be calling them to the priesthood. erhaps you see something in your son, your nephew, your grandson, the man who sits near you at Mass on Sunday, the guy at work prac ces his faith seriously and joyfully. I encourage you not to hesitate to tell those men in your life that they have gi s that would make them great priests. Without priests, there are no Sacraments, there is no Church. Your words of love and encouragement can make a difference!
