1 Fourth Sunday in Lent Laetare March 31, Year of Our T Lord 2019 ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH The Lord Feeds His eople The Lord provided bread from heaven for His people in the wilderness (Ex. 16:2 21). Now He who is Himself the living bread from heaven miraculously provides bread for the five thousand (John 6:1 15). This takes place near the time of the assover, after a great multitude had followed Jesus across the sea, and when He went up on a mountain. Seen in this way, Jesus is our new and greater Moses, who releases us from the bondage of Mount Sinai and makes us free children of the promise (Gal. 4:21 31). Five loaves become twelve baskets that is, the five books of Moses find their goal and fulfillment in Christ, whose people continue steadfastly in the doctrine and fellowship of the twelve apostles, and in the breaking and receiving of the bread of life, which is the body of Christ together with His precious blood, and in the prayers (Acts 2:41 47). So it is that God s people shall not hunger or thirst (Is. 49:8 13). For He abundantly provides for us in both body and soul. 2 2 T A WORD ABOUT THE DIVINE SERVICE T If you were to ask most people what worship is, they might say, Worship is praising the Lord or Worship is what human beings do to express their thanks to God or Worship is going to church, or something like that. While there is some truth to each of these answers, they do not adequately describe the main purpose of Lutheran worship. We Lutherans have a unique perspective on worship. We know that God s Word and His holy Sacraments are His precious gifts to us. They are the tools the Holy Spirit uses to give us forgiveness, life and salvation. The main purpose of Lutheran worship is to receive these gifts from God. Our Lutheran Confessions explain this truth as follows: The service and worship of the Gospel is to receive good things from God (Apology to the Augsburg Confession, Article IV.310). I am not sure whether we have adequately emphasized this important truth. God gives His gifts. We receive them. That is the main purpose of Lutheran worship. He does this as His Gospel is proclaimed, as His Word is read, as His forgiveness is announced and sinners are absolved, and as we receive our Lord s body and blood in Holy Communion. In these wonderful ways, God is present with us, His people, drawing us to Himself and giving us what we need so much-his mercy, forgiveness, love, joy, peace, power and comfort! The purpose of worship, therefore, is to be gathered by God around His gifts. Having clearly established this important point, I need to say that it would be wrong to assume that we are merely passive participants in the worship service. Listen to the beautiful introduction to Lutheran Worship. Our Lord speaks and we listen. His Word bestows what it says. Faith that is born from what is heard acknowledges the gifts, received with eager thankfulness and praise. Saying back to Him what he has said to us, we repeat what is most true and sure The rhythm of our worship is from him to us, and then from us back to him. He gives his gifts, and together we receive and extol them. We build one another up as we speak to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (Lutheran Worship, p. 6). How true! God speaks. We listen. Then we speak the great amen of faith, saying, Yes, yes, this is true! raise God for His mercy in permitting us to receive His gifts! raise God for drawing us together around His gifts! 3 3 T Confession and Absolution T Hymn of Invocation: 420 Christ, the Life of All the Living 5 Thou hast suffered men to bruise Thee, That from pain I might be free; Falsely did Thy foes accuse Thee: Thence I gain security; Comfortless Thy soul did languish Me to comfort in my anguish. Thousand, thousand thanks shall be, Dearest Jesus, unto Thee. 6 Thou hast suffered great affliction And hast borne it patiently, Even death by crucifixion, Fully to atone for me; Thou didst choose to be tormented That my doom should be prevented. Thousand, thousand thanks shall be, Dearest Jesus, unto Thee. 7 Then, for all that wrought my pardon, For Thy sorrows deep and sore, For Thine anguish in the Garden, I will thank Thee evermore, Thank Thee for Thy groaning, sighing, For Thy bleeding and Thy dying, For that last triumphant cry, And shall praise Thee, Lord, on high.

4 Stand The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. Invocation In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Exhortation LSB 184 Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination. Confession of Sins LSB 184 O almighty God, merciful Father, C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. Absolution LSB 185 Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

5 Introit T Service of the Word T Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her, all you who love her; C that you may nurse and be satisfied from her consoling breast. I was glad when they said to me, Let us go to the house of the LORD! C Our feet have been standing within your gates, O Jerusalem! ray for the peace of Jerusalem! May they be secure who love you! C For my brothers and companions sake I will say, eace be within you! C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her, all you who love her; C that you may nurse and be satisfied from her consoling breast. salm 122:1 2, 6, 8; antiphon: Isaiah 66:10a, 11a Kyrie LSB 186 Salutation and Collect of the Day The Lord be with you.

6 Let us pray. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, Your mercies are new every morning; and though we deserve only punishment, You receive us as Your children and provide for all our needs of body and soul. Grant that we may heartily acknowledge Your merciful goodness, give thanks for all Your benefits, and serve You in willing obedience; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Sit Old Testament Reading Exodus 16: And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, 3 and the people of Israel said to them, Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger. 4 Then the LORD said to Moses, Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. 5 On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily. 6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, At evening you shall know that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, 7 and in the morning you shall see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your grumbling against the LORD. For what are we, that you grumble against us? 8 And Moses said, When the LORD gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the LORD has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him what are we? Your grumbling is not against us but against the LORD. 9 Then Moses said to Aaron, Say to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, Come near before the LORD, for he has heard your grumbling. 10 And as soon as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud. 11 And the LORD said to Moses, 12 I have heard the grumbling of the people of Israel. Say to them, At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. Then you shall know that I am the LORD your God. 13 In the evening quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning dew lay around the camp. 14 And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground. 15 When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, What is it? For they did not know what it was.

7 And Moses said to them, It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat. 16 This is what the LORD has commanded: Gather of it, each one of you, as much as he can eat. You shall each take an omer, according to the number of the persons that each of you has in his tent. 17 And the people of Israel did so. They gathered, some more, some less. 18 But when they measured it with an omer, whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack. Each of them gathered as much as he could eat. 19 And Moses said to them, Let no one leave any of it over till the morning. 20 But they did not listen to Moses. Some left part of it till the morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them. 21 Morning by morning they gathered it, each as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Gradual salm 122:1, 7 A I was glad when they said to me, Let us go to the house of the LORD! C eace be within your walls and security within your towers! Epistle Galatians 4: Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. 23 But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise. 24 Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. 25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. 27 For it is written, Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor! For the children of the desolate one will be more than those of the one who has a husband. 28 Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29 But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. 30 But what does the Scripture say? Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman. 31 So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman. This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

8 Stand Holy Gospel John 6:1 15 The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the sixth chapter. 1 After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. 2 And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. 3 Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. 4 Now the assover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. 5 Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to hilip, Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat? 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. 7 hilip answered him, Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little. 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon eter s brother, said to him, 9 There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many? 10 Jesus said, Have the people sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost. 13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten. 14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, This is indeed the rophet who is to come into the world! 15 erceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Stand Nicene Creed C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

9 And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under ontius ilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen. Sit Hymn of the Day: 743 Jesus, riceless Treasure

10 5 Evil world, I leave thee; Thou canst not deceive me, Thine appeal is vain. Sin that once did blind me, Get thee far behind me, Come not forth again. ast thy hour, O pride and pow r; Sinful life, thy bonds I sever, Leave thee now forever. 6 Hence, all fear and sadness! For the Lord of gladness, Jesus, enters in. Those who love the Father, Though the storms may gather, Still have peace within. Yea, whate er I here must bear, Thou art still my purest pleasure, Jesus, priceless treasure! Sermon

11 Stand Offertory LSB 192 Sit Offering Stand rayer of the Church C C Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Brief silence For the eyes of all the faithful to be ever turned toward the Lord, that they would see Him in His Holy Word and Sacraments, receive His grace and mercy, and walk as children of the light, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. For Matthew, our Synod president; Arie, our district president; Sean, our circuit visitor; and all pastors in Christ, that they would be steadfast in their proclamation of repentance and the forgiveness of sins in Christ s name, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

12 C C C C C C C For our congregation, that we would be content in the Lord s gracious provisions, kept from greed and covetousness, and filled with generosity in support of the Lord s work among us and abroad, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. For the unemployed and underemployed, that they would find suitable work to support themselves and their families; and for all of us, that we would find joy and contentment in our vocations, faithfully performing the duties to which we are called, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. For all those who suffer with physical and mental ailments, especially Sandy, that they would be given the strength to endure their afflictions, the grace to remember the Lord s steadfast love for them and the relief they need, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. For all who partake of the Holy Supper of Christ s very body and blood this day, that their sins would be forgiven, their faith strengthened and their hearts stirred up to walk in love, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. For all those who have gone before us in the faith and now rest from their labors, let us give thanks to the Lord; that we would abide in Christ until we, too, are called from this vale of tears, and that we would, with them, enter into the eternal kingdom Christ will usher in on the Last Day, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. This morning and throughout this week we hold before You in prayer Teresa Rodahl Heavenly Father, we ask that in Your unconditional love that you would protect Teresa from all physical harm and danger and that You would keep her in the certainty of her salvation that she has by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. We also pray that You would enable us, this congregation of Zion, to hold Teresa in our prayers this week and let her know that we love her in Jesus Christ. Amen. We lay these petitions before Your throne of grace, O Father, for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

T Service of the Sacrament T reface LSB 194 The Lord be with you. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks unto the Lord, our God. It is truly meet, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who overcame the assaults of the devil and gave His life as a ransom for many that with cleansed hearts we might be prepared joyfully to celebrate the paschal feast in sincerity and truth. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: Sanctus LSB

14 Lord's rayer LSB 196 Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The Words of Our Lord LSB 197 Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. ax Domini The peace of the Lord be with you always. Agnus Dei LSB 198

15 Sit Communion at Zion At Zion Lutheran Church we follow the historic Christian practice of communion being for members only. This is not a recent innovation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, but rather, membership communion has been the universal practice of the Church for many centuries. In fact, to this day, it is still practiced by the majority of Christian Churches around the world. Our practice of membership communion (also known as closed communion) is prompted by our love, care, and concern for people. We observe communion for members only to protect those of a different confession from possibly taking the Lord s Supper to their judgment and harm. (See 1 Cor. 11:27-32) Furthermore, since the Lord s Supper is a public declaration of unity, we desire no divisions at the altar but joyful unity in the same teaching and confession of faith. (See 1 Cor. 10:16-17). If you are not a confirmed member in good standing of a Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Congregation, we ask that you do not commune today. However, please know that we look forward to having you at the Lord s Table soon. astor Filipek sincerely invites you to visit with him about becoming a member of Zion Lutheran Church, so that you may be ready to partake of this great gift of communion with us. Distribution Those participating in communion are asked to exit the pew on the outer aisle. When coming forward to receive communion we ask that 7 people from each side approach the altar. The Chalice and Individual Cups are offered at the Supper; you can specify to the servers which cup you would like to receive from. After receiving communion please exit down the center aisle. Stand Nunc Dimittis LSB 199
