First Sunday in Lent Invocabit March 10, Year of Our T Lord 2019 ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH Jesus Does Battle in Our lace In the Garden, man exalts himself to be a god in place of God (Gen. 3:1 21). He succumbs to the temptation of the devil, and eating of the forbidden fruit, he receives death. But in the sin-cursed wilderness, God humbles Himself to become man in place of man (Mt. 4:1 11). He does not eat but fasts and bears the onslaughts of the devil for us that we may be restored to life. Jesus stands as David in our place to do battle against the Goliath, Satan (1 Samuel 17:40 51). Though outwardly Jesus appears weak, yet He comes in the name of the Lord of hosts. He draws from the five smooth stones of the books of Moses and slings the Word of God. The stone sinks into the forehead, and the enemy falls. In Christ we are victorious over the devil. Let us therefore not receive the grace of God in vain (2 Cor. 6:1 10), but seeing that we have a great High riest, let us come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain help in time of need (Heb 4:14 16). 2 T A WORD ABOUT THE DIVINE SERVICE T If you were to ask most people what worship is, they might say, Worship is praising the Lord or Worship is what human beings do to express their thanks to God or Worship is going to church, or something like that. While there is some truth to each of these answers, they do not adequately describe the main purpose of Lutheran worship. We Lutherans have a unique perspective on worship. We know that God s Word and His holy Sacraments are His precious gifts to us. They are the tools the Holy Spirit uses to give us forgiveness, life and salvation. The main purpose of Lutheran worship is to receive these gifts from God. Our Lutheran Confessions explain this truth as follows: The service and worship of the Gospel is to receive good things from God (Apology to the Augsburg Confession, Article IV.310). I am not sure whether we have adequately emphasized this important truth. God gives His gifts. We receive them. That is the main purpose of Lutheran worship. He does this as His Gospel is proclaimed, as His Word is read, as His forgiveness is announced and sinners are absolved, and as we receive our Lord s body and blood in Holy Communion. In these wonderful ways, God is present with us, His people, drawing us to Himself and giving us what we need so much-his mercy, forgiveness, love, joy, peace, power and comfort! The purpose of worship, therefore, is to be gathered by God around His gifts. Having clearly established this important point, I need to say that it would be wrong to assume that we are merely passive participants in the worship service. Listen to the beautiful introduction to Lutheran Worship. Our Lord speaks and we listen. His Word bestows what it says. Faith that is born from what is heard acknowledges the gifts, received with eager thankfulness and praise. Saying back to Him what he has said to us, we repeat what is most true and sure The rhythm of our worship is from him to us, and then from us back to him. He gives his gifts, and together we receive and extol them. We build one another up as we speak to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (Lutheran Worship, p. 6). How true! God speaks. We listen. Then we speak the great amen of faith, saying, Yes, yes, this is true! raise God for His mercy in permitting us to receive His gifts! raise God for drawing us together around His gifts! 2

Exhortation LSB 184 Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination. Confession of Sins LSB 184 O almighty God, merciful Father, C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. Absolution LSB 185 Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. T Service of the Word T Introit salm 91:1 2, 9 10, 13; antiphon: vv. 15a, c, 16 When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will rescue him and honor him. C With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation. He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. C I will say to the LORD, My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust. Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place the Most High, who is my refuge 4
C no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent. You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot. C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will rescue him and honor him. C With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation. Kyrie LSB 186 Salutation and Collect of the Day The Lord be with you. Let us pray. O Lord God, You led Your ancient people through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land. Guide the people of Your Church that following our Savior we may walk through the wilderness of this world toward the glory of the world to come; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 6 Old Testament Reading Genesis 3: Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, Did God actually say, You shall not eat of any tree in the garden? 2 And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die. 4 But the serpent said to the woman, You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. 8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, Where are you? 10 And he said, I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself. 11 He said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat? 12 The man said, The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate. 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, What is this that you have done? The woman said, The serpent deceived me, and I ate. 14 The LORD God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel. 16 To the woman he said, I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. 6
Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you. 17 And to Adam he said, Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, You shall not eat of it, cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return. 20 The man called his wife s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21 And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them. This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Gradual salm 91:11 12 He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. C On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. Epistle 2 Corinthians 6: Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. 2 For he says, In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you. Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 3 We put no obstacle in anyone s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, 4 but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: by great endurance, in 7
afflictions, hardships, calamities, 5 beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; 6 by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love; 7 by truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; 8 through honor and dishonor, through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; 9 as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as punished, and yet not killed; 10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything. This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Stand Holy Gospel Matthew 4:1 11 The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fourth chapter. 1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread. 4 But he answered, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, and He will command his angels concerning you, On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said to him, Again it is written, You shall not put the Lord your God to the test. 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me. 10 Then Jesus said to him, Be gone, Satan! For it is written, 8
You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve. 11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Apostles Creed Sit C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under ontius ilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. 9

Sit Offering Stand rayer of the Church C C C C Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Brief silence For all who have been baptized into Christ s death and resurrection, that they would continue to receive the forgiveness, life and salvation He delivers in His Church, and thus remain clothed in His righteousness and holiness, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. For all pastors in Christ, that they would always preach the Gospel with a sense of urgency, recognizing that the favorable time and the day of salvation is always now; and for the Lord of the harvest to send out more servants, that the Gospel would be heard throughout the world, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. For all those being tempted to doubt their Christian faith, that they would be filled with the Holy Spirit and find comfort, peace and assurance in the One who overcame Satan s temptations in the wilderness, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. For Donald, our president; Doug, our governor; and all those who serve us at the federal, state and local levels of government, that they would serve with integrity and honor, and for the benefit of all, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. For the sick and shut-in, the hospitalized and recovering, and all those currently undergoing trials and tribulations in this vale of tears, that they would be 11
C C C C C comforted by, and find refuge in, the sure and certain promise that nothing can separate them from the love of God, which is theirs through Jesus Christ, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. For those who come to the holy altar this day, that they receive the very body and blood of Christ in repentance and faith, with reverence and awe, and to their abundant blessing, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. For all the faithful who have departed this world in faith, let us give thanks to the Lord; and for those of us who remain in this valley of the shadow of death, that Your holy angels would be with us, so that the evil foe may have no power over us, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy. This morning and throughout this week we hold before You in prayer Grover and Jan Riebe Heavenly Father, we ask that in Your unconditional love that you would protect Grover and Jan from all physical harm and danger and that You would keep them in the certainty of their salvation that they have by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. We also pray that You would enable us, this congregation of Zion, to hold Grover and Jan in our prayers this week and let them know that we love them in Jesus Christ. Amen. Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Amen. Lord's rayer LSB 196 Trusting in your promises we are bold to pray: C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 12
Concluding Collect Let us pray. Almighty God, grant to Your Church Your Holy Spirit and the wisdom that comes down from above, that Your Word may not be bound but have free course and be preached to the joy and edifying of Christ s holy people, so that in steadfast faith we may serve You and, in the confession of Your name, abide unto the end; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. Benediction LSB 202 The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and T give you peace.
