2 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time From the Pastor As we enter into this sec on of the Gospel of John chapter 6, where Jesus is empha c on his true Body and Blood being in the Bread and Wine, it reminds me of an event that took place near Fa ma. This event was permi ed by the Lord to prove that the Eucharist is indeed His Flesh and nourishment to sustain us. As you read it, remember this is a miracle Jesus did to show and prove what so many people doubt, His presence in the Eucharist. This same miracle will not necessarily happen to everyone, but Jesus allows incidents like this to show us greater depth and meaning. Alexandrina Maria da Costa, in the town of Balasar, Portugal ate no food except a daily recep on of Holy Communion for 13 years. Here is a shortened version of her story. Alexandrina was born in April In 1918, one day she and her sister Deolinda and another girl were in the house alone, and three men knocked at the door, one of whom had previously tried to molest Alexandrina. They broke into the home. Alexandrina, wan ng to preserve her chas ty, jumped from an upstairs window. The men fled, but Alexandrina s spine was irreparably injured. Six years later she had to remain in bed for the rest of her life. The slightest movement caused her intense pain. She began to grow closer and closer to the Lord and realized that she was suffering especially for the salva on of souls. She received Holy Communion every day and her thoughts frequently turned to Jesus in the tabernacle. In 1931 she heard the voice of Jesus say to her, Love, suffer and make repara on. She saw her voca on to be that of a vic m soul, to make repara on for all of us. Under the orders of her spiritual director she began to dictate her life s story to her sister, but many mes the devil threatened her not to write anymore. In 1936 Our Lord asked her to spread the message of Fa ma and to urge the consecra on of the world to the Immaculate Heart, and she offered herself as a vic m soul for this. In one of her ecstasies, Jesus said to her, Keep me company in the Blessed Sacrament. However, so few come. I am so abandoned, so lonely, so offended. Many people do not believe that I live in the tabernacle. Others believe, but do not love me and do not visit me; they live as if I were not there. From October 1938 Alexandrina began to suffer the passion of Jesus every Friday. During Holy Week in 1942, Jesus said to her, You will not take food again on earth. Your food will be my Flesh; your drink will be my Divine Blood. On Good Friday 1942 she began an absolute fast which lasted 13 years un l her death. The only nourishment was Jesus in Holy Communion every morning. News of her fast spread and the crowds became large. Some people had doubts and suspicions about her fast, so they accused her, her sister and mother of fraud. Therefore she agreed to medical observa on. The doctor asked her, Why do you not eat? She replied, I do not eat because I cannot. I feel full. I do not need it. It was decided that she should be admi ed to a nearby hospital for a thirty-day observa on of her fast. The doctor and nurses were mean to her and thought she somehow snuck food and made her stay another ten days. When the test was finally over the doctor said to her that he would visit her at home not as a doctorspy but as a friend who esteems her. Part of the medical report reads as follows: Her abs nence from solids and liquids was absolute during all that me. We also tes fy that she retained her weight, and her temperature, breathing, blood pressure, pulse, and blood were normal while her mental facul es were constant and lucid and she had not, during these forty days, any natural necessi es The laws of physiology and biochemistry cannot account for the survival of this sick woman While medical science could not explain, the explana on was simple. Jesus had said to Alexandrina, You are living by the Eucharist alone because I want to prove to the world the power of the Eucharist. She died on October 13th, Just as we have been proclaiming before each Sunday Mass, we are here because, in the Eucharist, Jesus is Alive, Jesus is Alive, Jesus is Alive! Farewell Mass and Parish Picnic As I prepare for my move, it will be tough to say goodbye mul ple mes. Along with the staff, we have decided to combine the yearly parish picnic, at Monroeville Park on Sunday, September 9, 2018 with a farewell. Therefore I will not be having a goodbye recep on a er any Masses, Also, due to the intensity, I am planning on a retreat at the beginning of October, and my presence will be scarce from October Also please note the other significant events, and try to come.

Parish and Community Announcements North American Martyrs Picnic North American Martyrs Parish cordially invites those in our new grouping, Group 451, to attend the 4:00 PM Mass and share in fellowship with us at our annual parish family picnic.
