2 St. Charles Finances Please remember that the Offertory collection is the sole source of funding for our parish budgeting. Please consider using collection envelopes or online giving to properly assure your contributions are recorded for your record keeping. Collection Envelopes Ongoing Winter Needs Dec 25 Clergy Benefit Jan 1 Solemnity of Mary Mother of God Jan 13 Ed Fund Jan 20 Monthly maintenance Jan 27 Support the Church around the world Thank you all for your generous support as we continue our Parish s Grand Annual Collection. The Fiscal Year 2019 Grand Annual Collection challenges us to raise funds for the needs of our parish. Each Christmas and Easter the Archdiocese takes as its only collection one for our retired clergy fund, namely Clergy Benefit Trust which serves our retired priests who are in good standing who have served us so well. Please remember this collection as we approach Christmas in the coming weeks. You may also give by visiting clergyfunds.org or texting priest25 to Thank you! Grand Annual Goal is $110,000. Our Grand Annual Collection has surpassed our anticipated goal of $110,00 and we have reached $113,850 thus far, 104 % of our goal! The extra amount raised above our goal acknowledges your great generosity towards this parish collaborative. Thank you! Gifts are still being accepted and please check with your employer to see if they offer matching donations to your charities of choice. Due to the Christmas holiday and early print deadlines, our weekly financial reports will be delayed but will be updated in the weeks to come. The Eucharist:the Heartbeat of parish life. Adoration makes every day Christmas. Our Lord longs for this time with you. We as his disciples need this silent and sacred time. Adoration is on Thursdays beginning at 6:30-9pm in the upper church and on 3rd Sundays beginning at 1pm lower church. Our St Charles School is a traditional pre-k through grade 8 Catholic school and is currently accepting registrations for the school year. Please give us a call for a tour or with any questions or visit our website On Friday, December 7th, St. Charles School held its first-ever Holly Jolly Christmas Party. Children from the parish and school communities joined together to enjoy an evening of Christmas festivities. Santa and his elf read the children The Night Before Christmas and led a sing-a-long. Two Christmas movies were shown on the big screen, in the new school gym. Pizza, popcorn and hot chocolate were served. Throughout the evening, festive trolley tours carried families throughout Woburn to view Christmas light displays. Thank you to everyone who made the event possible. Merry Christmas to all! We are excited to announce that St. Charles School will be holding a Career Day on Thursday, January 31 at 9am. This Career Day will be specifically for St. Charles students in grades 5-8. The purpose of this event is to expose SCS middle schoolers to various industries and career paths. We are currently seeking enthusiastic professionals from a broad range of industries who are eager to present. We hope you have noticed the hourly tolling of the newly renovated bells during the day if you are within hearing distance.
3 3rd Sunday of Advent Month of the Immaculate Conception December 23, 2018 Pilgrimage is a word we use for describing how we journey towards God.In this world important places in the life of Christians and history have inspired us to walk the walk of others who have gone before us in the faith. My dear Precious Lord, I did not mean to take your place. I only bring toys and things and You bring love and grace. People give me lists of wishes and hope that they come true; But you hear prayers of the heart and promise Your Will to do. Children try to be good and not to cry when I am coming to town; But You love them unconditionally and that love will abound. I leave only a bag of toys and temporary joy for a season; But You leave a heart full of love, full of purpose and reasons. I have a lot of believers and what one might call fame; But I never healed the blind nor tried to help the lame. I have rosy cheeks and a voice full of laughter; But no nail scarred hands or a promise of the hereafter. You may find several of me in town or at the mall; But there is only One omnipotent You to answer a sinner s call. And so, my dear precious Jesus, I kneel here to pray and to worship and adore You on this Your holy birthday. Over the next year there will 2 terrific opportunities in our own city to participate with a group and go on a pilgrimage to a holy place. Fr John Capuci our Pastor has set his sites on leading us to Sicily. He is calling the pilgrimage Saints, Sinners, and Spaghetti and invites you to join with him next November 4 15, 2019 as he leads us in this holy and inspiring trip. Fr Thomas Powers and Fr Matthias of St Anthony s & Barbara s Collaborative will also be leading a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France from June 30 July 9, Please mark your calendars for 2 very inspiring and holy opportunities. More details to follow. Please be aware that the parish offices located at 8 Summer Street will be closed from Monday December 24 until Wednesday January 2. We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year! Mark your calendars for some great opportunities in the new year to come! Training for Disciples in Mission is scheduled for Wednesday February 13, 2019 from 7-9pm in the Parish Center. Join us! Training for Disciples in Mission training in the Portuguese language is scheduled for Saturday February 16, 2019 in the Parish Center 9-5pm.Join us! Our Woburn Lenten Mission will be Sunday March 31, Monday April 1, & Tuesday April 2. Join us for an unbelievable experience as each parish will host an evening. St Charles is committed to aiding our parishioners in their journey in becoming intentional disciples and in serving and growing their Church through accepting the mission and getting involved. There is no better way of doing this than offering solid catholic formation and opportunities for people to gather and share their parish and faith. Faith formation for adults will be offered throughout the year for our 3 language communities. Join in! Did you know? The poinsettia, a native plant of Central America, is very popular for Christmas decorating? The bright red leaves symbolize the burning, divine love of our Redeemer. The shape of the cluster of leaves and the contrast of the red with the green also remind one of the star of Bethlehem that shone so brightly the night our Savior was born and then guided the Magi to visit Him. A popular legend surrounds the poinsettia. Long ago, on Christmas Eve, a little Indian girl in Mexico wanted to bring a gift to present to Baby Jesus, lying in the creche at her Church. Being very poor, she could not buy a gift, as did the other children of the town. So on the way to Church, she gathered some green weeds on the edge of a field. Like the other children, she walked down the aisle of the Church and placed her bouquet at the creche. Suddenly, the green weeds turned a beautiful red, because she had given the most wonderful gift of all, the gift of genuine love. Since then, the poinsettia has been known in Mexico as flores de la Noche Buena.

5 Merry Christmas to all and to all a. I would like to wish a very Merry Christmas to all who call St. Charles their home parish, to all our visitors and to every single person who walks through our doors. The last six months has been a whirlwind of activities and events that I have been delighted to attend. I am honored that so many people heard our plea for Christmas decorations and brought us so many lights and trees. You shared with me the joy and love of Christmas. Lights, decorations and garland all bring about the sentimentality of Christmas that warms the heart. But even more than just the decorations, the generosity of each and every person who came to our little need has warmed my heart. The mere fact that you brought all that you did to the rectory is a demonstration of your love for us, your priests. To know and experience the love of parishioners is an incredible gift that not only warms our hearts, but gives us the courage to continue a life of service. To know we are cared about is a great privilege that I am honored to say you have allowed me to experience. So many of you have sent us gifts and cards. We are so very appreciative of every thought and act of charity you have bestowed upon us this Christmas. I have been so excited to celebrate my first Christmas here at St. Charles this year. Every week the gifts of smiles, handshakes, laughs, and even a few hugs made me excited to celebrate this feast of love with you. The welcome and hospitality I have received must have been a sign of the love I am experiencing this Christmas from each and everyone of you. I am very honored to be your Pastor, your priest. I hope and pray that you and your family will be blessed with the love and care that has been my everyday experience these past six months. May your Christmas day be filled with happiness and joy. I pray that there will be laughter and love overflowing in your home. And know that as I have come to know your care, please believe that we, the priests of our parish, care for you as well. I pray that Our Lady will intercede for you and your family. As Mary and Joseph wandered around Bethlehem, looking for space for Jesus, I pray that He will find a new space in your heart. Make Him a part of your life in a new and wonderful way by allowing Him space. May His love and presence in your life transform you to be a sign of His goodness in the world around you. On behalf of all the priests and staff of St. Charles Borromeo Parish, I would like to thank you for your generosity in the many gifts and cards you have sent to us, and to wish to you all A blessed St. Charles Borromeo Christmas and health and happiness this New Year. Your Pastor, Fr. John M. Capuci
