In total, SCS made 9 Thanksgiving baskets and donated over $150 in gift cards to support those in need. Pictured here are s students delivering the baskets to the Food Pantry. We hope you have noticed the tolling of the newly renovated bells during the day if you are within hearing distance. 3 1st Sunday of Advent Month of the Immaculate Conception December 2, 2018 Did you know Cardinal Seán O Malley presented 125 Cheverus Award Medals to laypersons, deacons and religious during a Prayer Service on Sunday, November 25,2018 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Malden? We are so please to announce 3 sets of those winners were from St Charles! Thiago and Grazie Lira, Erica Velasquez, and Rosemarie O Connor were among the faithful who received the award for the dedication and commitment they have shown in serving St Charles Borromeo parish over many years. Congratulations to all! Student Faith Formation update: It all starts with the Mass!We are always in need of catechists and cocatechists for the programs. And cannot start this season without you! CATECHISTS NEEDED! Classes have begun and we need you! Catechists are need for Wednesdays and Sundays. Would you consider being a co-catechist or a hall safety monitor during class time? The safety and education in the faith of our students is of the utmost importance. In the coming months Deacon Franklin will be offering opportunities for Virtus Training, adult faith formation and child safety training for volunteers. Those dates will be forthcoming. Thank you! Spirit of Christmas is a ministry of St Charles to help those in our collaborative who may not be able to afford toys for their children at Christmas. The giving trees will be set up in the churches this year. If you are able to take a tag and return the unwrapped gift you purchased to the Parish Center offices it will be greatly appreciated before Sunday December 16th. Did you know that the dogma of the Immaculate Conception is the belief we hold of the conception of the Virgin Mary free from original sin by virtue of the merits of her son Jesus Christ? Sometimes it may be confused with the Virgin Birth of Jesus, which is really referred to as the Doctrine of Incarnation. When a dogma is defined it comes either from the magisterium the college of bishops with the Pope or from the Pope ex-cathedra meaning from the chair of Peter. Pope Pius IX defined this dogma on December 8, 1854, and that it was to be firmly believed as such by all Catholics. Biblical symbols representing the ancestry of Jesus, either in faith or bloodline, are added one by one onto a tree. As each ornament is added, a Bible verse is read to explain the symbol. There is one ornament for each day in Advent. Everyday during Advent, read a different scripture passage and put an ornament on your Jesse tree which tells about salvation history and the story of our redemption through the coming of Jesus Incarnate. At the end of Advent, you ll be all the more wise and have a Jesse tree all decorated. For scripture passages/ornaments see the back table in both upper and lower churches for this handout.

5 Happy New Year! With the start of Advent this week the Church inaugurates a new year dedicated to our reliving in time the central mysteries of the life of Christ. Christ is the the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end (Rv 22:13), and the Church has us begin each year focusing both on the end and on the beginning so that we might better live the present. Advent, to come is that season in which we prepare for Christ's coming in the past in Bethlehem, His coming in the future on the clouds of heaven to judge the living and the dead and His coming in the present in so many ways, but especially in the Eucharist. God entered history through a family in order to make family life holy and show us how to live in our homes. The same Christ whom the shepherds and Magi adored in Bethlehem comes to us in the Eucharist, in an even more humble disguise. Our response to Jesus in the Eucharist now is the true indication of whether we are awake or asleep, whether we're like Noah or so many of his contemporaries, whether we're imitating Mary and Joseph, the shepherds and the Magi, or whether we're behaving more like the inn-keepers, scholars of the law, and Herod. How we respond in this Advent season is therefore a great litmus test. How would we have responded two thousand years ago if we were in Bethlehem? The best indication is how we respond now when Christ is here with us in our own parish. In this new liturgical year, let's get it right. Emmanuel, God-with-us, has come! He is here with us now in the Eucharist. Come, let us adore Him! Fr John Capuci Indulgences for the Seasons of Advent and Christmas December 8th- Participate in a formal prayer service in honor of Mary "or at least openly demonstrate devotion to Mary" by praying before an image of the Immaculate Conception on display for public veneration. The faithful should also recite the Lord's Prayer, the creed and a prayer to Mary. December 15th Start a novena. Participation in a publicly celebrated novena prior to the Solemnity of Christmas is a partial indulgence. December 25th Receiving the papal blessing to the City and the World, even by radio or television, may earn a plenary indulgence. December 31st Publicly praying the Te Deum as an act thanksgiving on the last day of the year may earn a plenary indulgence. January 1st Publicly praying the Veni, Creator on the first day of the year may earn a plenary indulgence.
