2 Dear Parishioners and Friends, Advent A Time of Hope and Joy Advent marks the beginning of the Church s liturgical year. The four weeks of Advent lead us to the celebra- on of Christmas. Advent is a La n word meaning the coming or arrival. The season of Advent is a me to celebrate the three arrivals of Jesus, His lowly birth in human history, His coming to our hearts in the Catholic/ Chris an community in the present, and His promised return at the end of me. A visual way to prepare in your home is to create an Advent wreath. A simple wreath with three purple candles and one rose-colored candle. Light a candle each week represen ng the promise of the coming of Jesus, the light of the world. The third Sunday is a rose-colored candle to symbolize the opening prayer in the Mass - Rejoice in the Lord always. Advent books are available to help you make these four weeks a me of grace and blessings for you and your family. We are called to be vigilant, to be in wai ng for the coming of the Lord. To find out what it means to be vigilant, turn to today s second reading. Saint Paul exhorts us to increase and abound in love for one another and for all. As Chris ans, out stance of vigilance is one of love. When we love one another, Jesus is made present in our families, at our places of work, at school, and in our hearts. This is the call of the Advent Season! Focus this Advent on something much more important than finding the perfect gi for everyone on our list. May this season concentrate our a en on on how we treat each other, for we know that what we do for the least of our brothers and sisters, we do for the Lord. Star Community Home Outreach - St. Thomas the Apostle Help us reach out to the women and children who are living in the convent at Star of the Sea. The home provides temporary housing for women and children who find themselves homeless. Presently, there are about twelve families living in the home. Please help us provide cereal, peanut bu er, canned fruits and vegetables, tuna, and other non-perishable food items. Thank you for your support. Please place the food items in the basket or on the table by the side door at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE CELEBRATION - PATRONESS OF THE AMERICAS - SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2018 On December 8 at 4:00 pm at St. Thomas the Apostle, we will be honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe with a Mariachi Mass and fiesta in Ryan Hall. Immaculate Concep on of Our Blessed Virgin Mary, December 8 Saturday, December 8, we celebrate this sacred feast as we prepare for the birth of Jesus. God prepared Mary for her vital role, choosing her to be born without sin to bear the Son of God. The doctrine of the Immaculate Concep on was defined on December 8, 1854 by Pope Pius IX. The two things proclaimed about Mary from the angel Gabriel is that she is full of grace and that she has found favor with God. Mary firmly believed that nothing was impossible for God. Mary is our model as we work to avoid sin and to bear witness to the Son of God to the world through our words and ac ons.
