The tree can be made on a poster board with the symbols glued on, or on an actual tree. See our Jesse Tree in the Narthex being decorated compliments of the attendees during Children s Liturgy. SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Second Sunday of Advent Monday: International Human Rights Day Tuesday: St. Damasus I Wednesday: Our Lady of Guadalupe Thursday: St. Lucy Friday: St. John of the Cross When you are abroad and someone asks you which nationality are you, what is your answer? I think most, if not all of you will respond, I am an American. However, if the same question is asked when you are in the country most people will not say I am an American, but will say the country of origin of their immediate ancestors. I had something similar asked of me when I was a teenager. The question was, if there was a problem on the island which country would you go back to? At that time, I did not think to say that I could go to Africa, India or France, or Madagascar. I got the bug and I had the DNA test done. Like a good American, I did the test more than once. I am 17% Sub Saharan African, 38 % European, 35%, South Indian, 8 % Asian and 2 % Middle Eastern. I have been having a good time connecting with 2nd or 3rd cousins that I did not know, and also people that I could be related to but cannot see the connection at this point in time. If you google my last name, you will find a lake in Chad and some Tunisian food that have the name Broudou. The reason I am bringing all of this up is the fact that we all know there is a rise in racism, and anti-semitism in the our country and around the world. The bishops of the United States just released a document called - Open Wide our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love that they approved at their November meeting. I would encourage you to read it and see what can be done to eradicate this evil in our midst. I cannot understand how Christians can be anti- Semitic. Jesus and Mary were Jews, therefore Semites. I have experienced a form of racism in Mauritius called communalism and racism in other countries I have lived. Racism and anti-semitism is also in the church even among the clergy. We all have prejudices. We need to be aware of it and prevent it from causing division instead of unity. Remember our Parish Mission Prayer at Mass. Someone I met in this parish shared that they were asked when they wanted to join a group which nationality they were. That person has some non European background and her skin was darkened because of chemotherapy. So you can see racism is not too far away. May God bless you as we recognize that we are all children of God and we share a common humanity. Fr. Joseph Broudou OSA December 1st and 2nd Sunday Offering... $ 5, On-Line Giving... $ 1, TOTAL... $6, Weekly need... $6, May God bless you for your generosity!

4 PAGE FOUR AN AUGUSTINIAN PARISH DECEMBER 9,2018 Meet Our Catechist Kelly Hunnius My name is Kelly Hunnius and I am pleased to take this opportunity to introduce myself and share some thoughts on why I chose to become a Catechist at Our Mother of Good Counsel Parish. Our family has been part of the OMGC community for the past twelve years and we currently live in unincorporated New Lenox. My husband Dave and I have three children, Leah (11), Brooke (9) and Tessa (5) and I am sure we have met many of you at church activities and events over the years. This is my fourth year teaching Religious Education and I have enjoyed every moment! I started with the first grade students and spent two years in that grade before moving on the my daughter's third grade class, and helped them prepare for their First Communion. What a joy! I am currently blessed with teaching our oldest daughter's sixth grade class. I have been a Pharmacist since 1998, and I worked full time until 2015 at Silver Cross Hospital. I currently work as a Registry Pharmacist at the Hospital to allow more time with my family and to participate in volunteer activities like giving back to our Parish and being a Catechist! My experiences as a Catechist have enriched my life in many ways. Working with children brings many blessings, and lots of laughter during class. Throughout the years, my goal has been to teach the children traditional Catholic prayers, customs, and Bible stories and try to relate their faith to everyday life. I always try and plan exciting crafts, movies, games, and group challenges to keep the class engaged and excited to learn about God! These activities make the Bible stories and aspects of the Catholic Church more concrete and easier for the students to understand in a fun and relaxing way. When I see my current and past students in class and at church, I realize how grateful I am to have the opportunity to share in their Catholic Education. Thank you for sharing your happy, kind and caring children! Every Sunday is a holy day of obliga on for the faithful to par cipate in the Mass. January 1 Mary, Mother of God is a holy day of obligation when it fall on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Sunday. When it falls on a Saturday or Monday it is a holy day without obligation. Ascension has been transferred to the Seventh Sunday of Easter and is a holy day of obligation. August 15 Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a holy day of obligation when it fall on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Sunday. When it falls on a Saturday or Monday it is a holy day without obligation. November 1 All Saints Day is a holy day of obligation when it fall on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Sunday. When it falls on a Saturday or Monday it is a holy day without obligation. December 8 Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is always a day of obligation, expect in years when December 8 falls on Sunday and the solemnity is observed on December 9. December 25 Christmas is always a holy day of obligation.

5 DECEMBER 9, 2018 AN AUGUSTINIAN PARISH PAGE FIVE Our Parish theme for this Advent is "There is a Longing". Advent reminds us of the coming of Christ. For some, there is a longing for the coming of Christ in His glory in the future and others for the celebration of Jesus's birth in Bethlehem in the past. However, for all of us there is a longing to be closer to Jesus Christ in the present. By acknowledging our longing to be nearer to Jesus Christ puts us on the path of growing closer to Him. Please pray for the reposed soul of Sally Burns who entered eternal life on December 2, May her soul and all the souls of our loved ones rest in eternal peace. On behalf of the CCW, we would like to thank everyone that played an important part of our annual pancake breakfast. Thank you to all our volunteers and all of you who came out and supported the CCW. Generous donations were received from the following: Joe & Bobette Garrett Meijers Berkots Stringham Family Big Run Golf Course Citgo Refinery Joliet Country Club Jodi Bellside 7 Stringham Insurance Russ Petrizzo Marc Lochow@Profoma PSP Five Star Creations Home Sellers Realty Southland Steam Our wonderful Cooks Our CCW Families Santa and YOU!!!!! Merry Christmas!!!! Second Sunday of Advent God knows where we are and comes. This is divine revelation: God coming, God showing, God being with us. Always! Let us, therefore, wear the cloak of justice and the hat of God s glorious splendor. That is, let us still dress like Christ just as we were first clothed in him at Baptism and radiate his presence just as we were first illumined by him in that sacramental bath. SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Second Sunday of Advent Monday: International Human Rights Day Tuesday: St. Damasus I Wednesday: Our Lady of Guadalupe Thursday: St. Lucy Friday: St. John of the Cross John the Baptist calls us, today, to conversion. What will I do? How can I wear mercy like a comfortable cloak, a well-worn hat? How can my daily life shine in more merciful ways? RICHES Riches are the instrument of all vices, because they render us capable of putting even our worst desires into execution. --St. Ambrose
