May they become the Body of Christ if they want to live of the Spirit of Christ. St. Augustine You may find it strange that I am writing about the different commissions of the parish this Lent. It flows from the collect aka Opening prayer of Ash Wednesday that said Grant, O Lord, that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of Christian service. This week we look at the Human Outreach Commission which needs more hands. In its guidelines, you read We are against abortion, assisted suicide, contraception, euthanasia, use of fetal tissue for stem cell research, and capital punishment. In the same vein, being prolife to us means that "Wherever there are people in need of food and drink, clothing, housing, medicine, employment, education; wherever people lack the facilities necessary for living a truly human life or are afflicted with serious distress or illness or suffer exile or imprisonment, there Christian charity should seek them out and find them, console them with great solicitude, and help them with appropriate relief" (On the Apostolate of the Laity 8:4). Below is some of the activities of the group. ON GOING Prayer Warriors are those who pray for requested needs. He stepped away from the hubbub of life to pray. He took three friends who were drowsed by sleep on this retreat. But pray he still did. And God spoke from the cloud. How is prayer filling my lenten retreat, my lenten journey? With whom will I go for some quiet and prayer? What am I doing to listen for God s voice? Invite your meal companions to thank God with you. LENT RECONCILIATION SERVICE Tuesday, April 9, 7:00 pm St. Bernard s and Our Mother of Good Counsel parishes will host a joint Lenten Reconciliation Service at St. Bernard s on Tuesday, April 9 at 7:00 pm. All are encouraged to prepare for Easter in this meaningful, spiritual way. This communal form of the Sacrament of Penance can be especially helpful for those who have been away from the sacrament for some time. So many have expressed appreciation for this communal alternative to individual confession. Taking time to play..yes, play. Invite others to do the same. Dressing appropriately and with dignity. As Christians, we represent Christ, not culture. Lenten Small Groups have formed and begun meeting. The focus this year is Getting More Out of Lent by Deacon Keith Strom. The schedule is as follows.. Monday OMGC 12:30 pm Monday Evening Bible Study- OMGC 7 pm Monday Evening at The Fassola Home Thursday OMGC 1 pm 6 pm at The Strella Home If you would like to join one of these groups, please contact the Faith Formation office at or janet.re@omgccc.org
5 MARCH 17, 2019 AN AUGUSTINIAN PARISH PAGE FIVE CAN YOU IDENTIFY WITH THIS STORY?. This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have. Prayer Request We ask the faithful of the Diocese of Joliet to pray daily for the intention of Life Advocacy Day, March 31 - April 6, Please also consider fasting on Wednesday, April 3rd, to join in solidarity with those from our Diocese who will be traveling to Springfield to further the cause of Life in the Illinois Legislature by meeting with elected officials. This prayer and advocacy campaign is part of a larger effort by all the Dioceses in Illinois, and is coordinated by the Catholic Conference of Illinois. Daily Prayer for Life Advocacy Day March 31 - April 6, 2019 Why is this legislation so dangerous? House Bill 2495 & Senate Bill 1942: Repeals the current state ban on partialbirth abortions. Defines abortion as a fundamental right. Removes abortion clinics from regulations for serious medical procedures. Removes the requirement that only doctors can perform abortions. House Bill 2467 & Senate Bill 1594: Repeals Illinois Parental Notification of Abortion Act LENTEN PRAYER CORNER Prayer of Abandonment Father, I abandon myself into your hands; do with me what you will. Whatever you may do, I thank you. I am ready for all. I accept all. Let only your will be done in me, and in all your creatures. I wish no more than this, O Lord. Into your hands I commend my soul, I offer it to you with all the love of my heart, for I love you, Lord, and so I need to give myself, to surrender myself into your hands; without reserve, and with boundless confidence, for you are my Father. Amen Bl. Charles de Foucauld Why is Baptism so important in our Lenten understanding? Lent as a 40-day season developed in the fourth century from three merging sources. The first was the ancient paschal fast that began as a two-day observance before Easter but was gradually lengthened to 40 days. The second was the catechumenate as a process of preparation for Baptism, including an intense period of preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation to be celebrated at Easter. The third was the Order of Penitents, modeled on the catechumenate and sought a second conversion for those who had fallen back into serious sin after Baptism. As the catechumens (candidates for Baptism) entered their final preparation for Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist, the penitents and the rest of the community accompanied them on their journey and prepared to renew their baptismal vows at the Easter Vigil. Save the dates April 18th 7:00 pm, 19th 7:00 pm, 20th 8:00 pm for the most important celebration of the year. Did you know these? Holy See-The seat of final authority for the entire Roman Catholic Church located in Rome and positioned under the headship of the pope. INRI - The first letter of four Latin words that were written on the cross, Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, which means Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.
