Liturgical Resources for the Resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, for Liturgies during the Conclave, and for Liturgies on the election of a new Pope. I. For Pope Benedict XVI Prior to Resignation on February 28 The Holy Father continues to be named at Mass in the Eucharistic Prayer until 1:00 pm Central Time, February 28, the day the resignation takes effect. It would also be appropriate to recall the Pope in the intentions of the Universal Prayer as well. Roman Missal Texts Cardinal George has given permission for the celebration of the Mass for Various Needs and Occasions, 2. For the Pope, on the weekdays of Lent for the pastoral benefit of the faithful. This Mass would be celebrated with white vestments, even in Lent. NOTE: This Mass is NOT permitted on the Sundays of Lent. February 22, Feast of the Chair of Peter, Apostle, has its own propers and presents a special day to pray in gratitude for the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI and in anticipation of the conclave. Eucharistic Prayer Suggestions for the Above Mass Eucharistic Prayer for Masses for Various Needs I: The Church on the Path of Unity. Eucharistic Prayer for Masses for Various Needs II: God Guides His Church along the Way of Salvation. After 1:00 PM CT (8:00 PM Rome time) on 28 February 2013, the name of the Pope is omitted from the Eucharistic Prayer until a new Pope is elected. Lectionary Texts In order to maintain the integrity of the Lenten Lectionary, Readings and Psalm should be those of the Lenten Weekday. Sample Intercessory Prayers The following models can be used at all the Masses celebrated until February 28. That Pope Benedict XVI may be strengthened by the Peace of Christ, and by the prayers and the love of all the faithful, we pray to the Lord For Pope Benedict XVI, in his final days as the Successor of Peter, that he may find joy in the ministry and service he has given to Christ and to the Church, we pray to the Lord That Pope Benedict XVI may have rest from his labors, and earn the reward promised to good and faithful servants, we pray to the Lord 1
Private Prayer The faithful should be encouraged to pray for the Holy Father offering their fasting, works and almsgiving for him. The recitation of the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be for the intentions of the Pope is encouraged. Parishes that have exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and other communal prayer should also keep the Holy Father as an intention of their efforts. II. During the Interregnum and the Conclave to Elect a Pope This period between the resignation of the Holy Father and the election of his successor, is formally referred to as The Vacancy of the Apostolic See, or Papal Interregnum, from the Latin for between the reign (of a Pope and his successor). Intercessions for the cardinals preparing for the election should be included in the Prayer of the Faithful at Mass as well as other times the Church comes together for prayer. Until the new Pope is named, the intercession for the Pope in the Eucharistic Prayer is omitted. Roman Missal Texts Cardinal George has given permission for the following Masses for Various Needs and Occasions or Votive Masses to be celebrated on the weekdays of Lent for the pastoral benefit of the faithful. Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Occasions, I. For Holy Church, 1. For the Church (violet vestments) Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Occasions, I. For Holy Church, 4. For the Election of a Pope (violet vestments) Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Occasions, I. For Holy Church, 5. For a Council or Synod (violet vestments) Votive Masses, 9. The Holy Spirit (with red vestments, even during Lent) Votive Masses, 16. Saint Peter, Apostle (with red vestments, even during Lent) (NOTE: These Masses are NOT permitted on The Sundays of Lent, or March 19, Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary) Eucharistic Prayer Suggestions for the Above Masses Eucharistic Prayer for Masses for Various Needs I: The Church on the Path of Unity. Eucharistic Prayer for Masses for Various Needs II: God Guides His Church along the Way of Salvation. The name of the Pope is omitted from the Eucharistic Prayer until a new Pope is elected. 2
Lectionary Texts In order to maintain the integrity of the Lenten Lectionary, Readings and Psalms should be those of the Lenten Weekday. The Homily Care should be taken that the homilies during these Masses offer the opportunity to reflect on the Petrine ministry and its role within the Church. They might also highlight the relationship between the local and universal Church, or the Church s constant dependence upon the Holy Spirit, especially during this time of conclave. Sample Intercessory Prayers The following models can be used at all the Masses celebrated during the interregnum and the time of conclave. For the College of Cardinals: That they may be open in heart and mind to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we pray to the Lord: For an outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the conclave in Rome: That through intense prayer and genuine discernment, the Cardinals may listen to the Spirit's guidance, we pray to the Lord: For the Catholic Church: That in faith and confidence we may be united as we await the Spirit's action in the election of a new Pope, we pray to the Lord: That the Holy Spirit will inspire and strengthen the Cardinal-electors as they choose a new Holy Father to lead us, we pray to the Lord. That the College of Cardinals in its electoral process may be a worthy vehicle of God s grace guiding the Church, we pray to the Lord. That the Holy Spirit will work strongly in the next Pope chosen by the College of Cardinals, we pray to the Lord. The Liturgy of the Hours Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer may also be celebrated and on days when there is no obligatory memorial, feasts or solemnities, the closing prayer may be taken from the Mass for the Election of a Pope. Private Prayer The faithful should be encouraged to pray for the Church in their private prayers, offering their fasting, works and almsgiving for the election of the new Pope. The recitation of the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be is encouraged. Parishes that have exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and other communal prayer should also keep our next Pope as an intention of their efforts. 3
A Prayer Vigil for the Guidance of the Holy Spirit On the night before the Conclave in Rome begins, parishes (or perhaps deanaries or vicariates) might celebrate a prayer vigil service, at which the Church would pray for the guidance of the Spirit during the conclave to elect the next Pope. A suggested Order of Service is at the end of this resource. III. Upon the Election of a New Pope Roman Missal Texts Cardinal George has given permission for the celebration of the Mass for Various Needs and Occasions, 2. For the Pope on the weekdays of Lent for the pastoral benefit of the faithful. The Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I) is also appropriate. This Mass would be celebrated with white vestments, even in Lent. NOTE: This Mass is NOT permitted on The Sundays of Lent, or on March 19, Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary Once the Pope is named, his name is inserted in the Eucharistic Prayer (without his numeral) in the usual way. Lectionary Texts In order to maintain the integrity of the Lenten Lectionary, Readings and Psalms should be those of the Lenten Weekday. The Homily The homily could offer the opportunity to reflect on the Petrine ministry and its role within the Church. It also affords the homilist an opportunity to instruct the faithful in the relationship between the local and the universal Church. Liturgy of the Hours Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer may also be celebrated and on days when there is no obligatory memorial, feasts or solemnities, the closing prayer may be taken from the Mass for the Pope. Sample Intercessory Prayers The following models can be used at all the Masses celebrated during the time after the new Pope is elected. For N., our Pope: May he be the visible center and foundation of our unity in faith and love, we pray to the Lord: For N., our Pope: may his word and example inspire and guide the Church, we pray to the Lord: 4
For N., our Pope: may God grant him a spirit of courage and right judgment, a spirit of knowledge and love as he leads the Church entrusted to his care, we pray to the Lord: For our new Holy Father, N., that he may be strengthened as he embarks on his ministry of unity, love and peace, we pray to the Lord. That our recently elected Holy Father, N., working together with the bishops of the Church, may build up the Body of Christ in peace and in joy, we pray to the Lord. That our newly elected Holy Father N., may be a champion of the poor, a reconciler of nations and a force for peace and unity in our world, we pray to the Lord. Other Parish Practices The church bells may be rung when the Pope is named and announced. According to custom, gold and white bunting could be affixed above the entrance to the church or chapel. This would remain until the Mass of Installation of the new Pope. Flowers could be placed near the Vatican flag, which might be displayed somewhere prominently in the narthex or gathering space. Parishes can purchase fabric for this purpose, or make arrangements to rent drapery from a fabric supply company. Such companies are: Watra Church Goods 4201 South Archer Ave. Chicago, IL (Tel or ) WGN Flag and Decorating 7984 S. South Chicago Avenue Chicago, IL (Tel ) (Fax: ) ( Meyer-Vogelpohl (Cincinnati OH) a church goods and religious art company also has gold and white bunting available. ( ) (sales@mvchurchgoods.com) Marklin Candle Co. (Contocook, NH) also has bunting gold/white for purchase. It is available in different lengths and is weatherproof. They also carry large vigil candles decorated with the papal coat of arms.
