1 October 2018 Committed to living a faith journey that is sacred, intentional, compassionate and inclusive. From the Priest-In-Charge Worship Every Sunday Holy Eucharist 9:30 am, Church Special Events Saturday, Oct. 13 Oktoberfest Dinner 5:30 pm, Doors Open Friday, Oct. 26 Soul Kitchen 5:30 pm., Narthex Yearning for a new way will not produce it. Only ending the old way can do that. You cannot hold onto the old, all the while declaring that you want something new. The old will defy the new; The old will deny the new; The old will decry the new. There is only one way to bring in the new. You must make room for it. -Neale Donald Walsch I stumbled (literally) across this saying just recently. It gave me the courage to make an important decision. I have decided to replace my old worn out hip joint with a new one! I am scheduled for surgery at St. Joseph s Hospital in Stockton on October 15. It is a robotic process and am expected to have a smooth and quick recovery. However, I will be gone the last two Sundays in October, but plan to attend the Arts of St. John s concert on November 3 and celebrate All Saints Sunday with you on November 4. The Rev. Elaine Breckenridge

9 The Arts at St. John s Maeve Gilchrist & Eugene Friesen In Concert on the Harp & Cello Saturday, November 3 at 7:00 p.m. Join us for an evening of Celtic Songs, Harp and Cello Harmonies from Ireland and Scotland with Eugene Friesen and Maeve Gilchrist! The duo of Maeve Gilchrist and Eugene Friesen brings together two of the most soulful instruments in music in a banquet of innovation, rhythm, grace, humor, and beauty. With a serious influence of Scottish dance music and the haunting songs of Ireland, Maeve and Eugene bring unique twists to tradition in a diverse program of solos and duos that is both uplifting and heart-opening. Born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, and currently based in Brooklyn, New York, Maeve s innovative approach to her instrument stretches its harmonic limits and improvisational possibilities. She is as at home as a soloist with an internationally renowned orchestra as she is playing with a traditional Irish folk group or using electronic augmentation in a more contemporary, improvisatory setting. Eugene grew up in California in the 60 s and has taken the cello into pop, jazz, folk, and world music styles from his solid base in classical music. He s a four-time Grammy Award-winner, an international concert performer, an in-demand session player, and a composer, conductor and music educator. October 2018 Page 9
