Here in the Lansing area, flooding and pot holes seem to the lead story of the news my prayers go out to all that are affected by the flooding throughout the State. 75 th Michigan District II Exemplification We re moving toward the home stretch for the 75 th Michigan District II Exemplification which will be held April 21 st at St. Mary s Parish and School in Charlotte and hosted by the Bishop Povish Assembly 2815 (flyer with details included in newsletter). As we have previously announced, we are extremely privileged to have a very special Class Honoree, Sir Knight Dick Thelen, a World War 2 veteran and survivor of the USS Indianapolis which was torpedoed and sank in All the forms and information have been sent to Navigators and Comptrollers, as well as posted on our website. This will be a one day Exemplification, but we do have a block of rooms available at the Holiday Inn Express in Charlotte (see included flyer). In addition to the 75 th Exemplification that will be held on Saturday, we will again be hosting a Priest Exemplification on Wednesday, April 18 th for those unable to attend on Saturday (see included flyer) Now s the time to ask those Third Degree Brothers to complete their journey to Patriotic Degree and experience the rich patriotic lessons about what it means to be a Patriot for God and Country, a Catholic American Citizen. As I have challenged in the past recruit a new Knight and take him to an Admission Degree and then a Major Degree (there are a few scheduled throughout the District before the Exemplification) and culminate the experience by bringing him to the Patriotic Degree in Charlotte on April 21 st! Finally please support the New Sir Knights, District and Exemplification by selling or purchasing ads for the Souvenir book (forms on our website). Star Assembly Award As of this writing based on my records it appears we have five of our twenty-two Assemblies that have met their quotas and would currently qualify for the Star Assembly Award (assuming they meet the rest of the requirements for this fraternal year). With the great Fall Exemplifications we also have many Assemblies that are close to meeting their quotas - so this prestigious award is definitely in reach for all Assemblies. It s easy: Earn the Fourth Degree Civic Award Enter the To Be A Patriot competition Meet the assembly new member goal of 7% Submit the Report of Officers # 186 (due July 1) Submit the Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity #1728 (due January 31) Submit the Annual Assembly Audit Report #1315 (due August 1) Publish a monthly newsletter or bulletin for assembly members. 2 My brother Knights and Ladies, Keeping the Mark! 2 On Ash Wednesday we were marked on the forehead with a cross of ashes as a sign of penitence and mortality. The use of ashes, made by burning palm crosses from the previous Palm Sunday, is very symbolic. The minister or priest marks each worshipper on the forehead, and says Remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return, or a similar phrase based on God's sentence on Adam in Genesis 3:19. This simple but profound mark of the cross with ashes on our foreheads seals us with Christs suffering and death, with the hope that we too will raise up from the ashes of our own death. Keeping the mark! As I reflect on the past Ash Wednesday with the mark made on my forehead, I couldn t help but think of my ordination when the Bishop marked me with the Sacred Chrism. In fact I started to recall all those moments in my Sacramental life where I have been marked: Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders, Anointing of the Sick, and in my initiation into various steps of our Order. Each of us are marked and it is up to us, as Knights, in keeping the mark alive. So during this Lenten season, I challenge you to do just that by keeping the mark by praying, fasting and abstaining as we are asked to do. But above all keep the markof living your life fully to vision of our founder not just Michael J. McGiveney but that of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! May you all have a blessed Lenten season. Fr. Bob Irish Hello Ladies, I m sure we are all ready for spring to come after many cold and snowy days these past few weeks. Our first Michigan District II meeting for 2018 is going to be held on March 10, 2018, at the Catholic Community of St. Jude, in DeWitt, Michigan. I hope many Ladies plan to attend this meeting as we will be discussing the upcoming 75th Exemplification and additional upcoming events for I hope to have a guest speaker from the Lansing Diocese, however, it that does not work out then we will have a little project to be enjoyed by all. Please come to our March 10 th meeting and join in the fun and friendship. On April 21, 2018, we will be holding our 75 th Exemplification at St. Mary Catholic Church and School in Charlotte, Michigan. We have a wonderful class honoree, Sir Knight Richard P. Thelen, who was a World War II survivor of the U.S.S. Indianapolis. I m sure many will be truly inspired by his faith, dedication, and love of our Country. We will again be asking that each assembly please bring a basket to raffle off at the Exemplification. A letter should have been received by all Michigan District II assemblies regarding this effort. As always, we give our most sincere appreciation to you all for your time in the donation of these baskets. As a reminder, any items that the assemblies have collected for our veterans in Battle Creek or Ann Arbor should also be brought to our district meeting so our VAVS director may distribute these items accordingly to our veterans. If for any reason you are unable to bring these items to the District II meeting in March, you may bring them to the Exemplification in April. Thank you all for the donated items for our veterans. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please call me (517) or me at baldersonm@comcast.net. May God Bless you all! Lady Monica

Masters Update 3 If you have any questions about the requirements or need any assistance working toward the award, please contact me. Biennial District Meeting The Michigan District II Biennial Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, March 10 th at St. Jude s in DeWitt. As this is our Biennial District Assembly meeting required under the Laws and Rules of the Order, it is important all Faithful Navigators plan to be in attendance, as you are voting members of the District Assembly. Assembly delegates should have been elected by the Assemblies in February the official meeting announcement and delegate counts for each Assembly were sent to the Faithful Navigators in January. As a reminder, I need the delegate and alternative list from each Assembly by March 1 st. The Paperwork of the Order A huge thank you and congratulations to our Faithful Navigators and Comptrollers Michigan District II has all our paperwork turned in, to date, for this fraternal year (Audits and Fraternal Surveys)! Great job! Due up next will be the To Be A Patriot Award Application (due to the District Master by April 30 th for review and submission of a District finalist to the Province by May 15 th ), Civic Award Form (June 30 th ) and Report of Officers Chosen (due by July 1 st but should be submitted as soon as Assembly Elections are held in May). Sometime in May we will also need to submit Assembly information into the State Council for the State Directory stay tuned! Assembly Election of Officers Just a reminder Article VII, Section 24(J) of the Laws and Rules Governing the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus states that regular election of officers in Assemblies shall take place annually at the first regular business meeting of the assembly held in May of each year. Therefore, in order to have initial nominations for a slate of officers during the April meeting, now would be a good time to start recruiting the future leaders of your Assemblies. New Color Corp Drill Manual The new Color Corp Drill Manual for the Honor Guard covering the new uniform was approved by the Supreme Board of Directors on February 2 nd. I m sure it will be an item of discussion at our March 10 th Biennial Meeting. It will be printed in limited quantities but I am told two copies (one for the Navigator and one for the Commander) will be sent to each Navigator by Supreme. The following is a link to an electronic copy of the new manual: Please send all questions regarding the new manual to myself with a copy to our Worthy Senior Marshal Bill Currie so we can coordinate questions for the Vice Supreme Master. Operation Patriotism At our biennial meeting we will be discussing the District s Operation Patriotism program for this fraternal year. As discussed at our January Diocesan meetings, we re going back to our past practice of each Assembly making a $250 donation to the District for a program which we will finalize at the Biennial Meeting. If your Assembly hasn t made their donation, please bring your check to the Biennial Meeting. Our new Worthy VAVS Directors Jim Pitsch for the Kalamazoo Diocese and John Yonak for the Lansing Diocese should be in attendance to lead our discussion on which project we will complete for this fraternal year. If you have ideas please make sure you get them to John or Jim. Living Rosaries Once again, we will be asking for all Color Corp to assist in both the Capitol Lawn Living Rosary and the State Convention Living Rosary on Mackinac Island. We need all available Sir Knights in the new uniform, if you have it, or regalia to have a good showing for each of these events. The Capitol Living Rosary will be on Saturday, May 12 th at 11:00 report time and details will be forthcoming. Continued on page 4

Masters Update 4 The State Convention Living Rosary is planned for Friday, May 25 th on Mackinac Island more details will be announced once they have been finalized by the State Council. FaithFest 2018 Once again we ve been asked to support FaithFest 2018 ( on Saturday, June 23 rd. There will be a District wide callout for the 4:30 Vigil Mass with Bishop Boyea (note the time change in the Mass from last year) This is a Family Festival of Faith Praising God with One Voice. The last two year s events were some of the most electrifying and energizing Catholic events I ve ever participated in as a Color Corp member. I encourage you to bring your family or plan a Council or Assembly trip for this one day event. As we have for the past couple years, the Knights of Columbus are sponsoring the fireworks that will occur at dusk. All Lansing Diocese Councils have been asked to support the fireworks with a goal of a donation of $100 from each Council. In addition to our support of the Color Corp, I m asking the Lansing Diocese Assemblies to also support the sponsorship of the fireworks with a donation of $100 or whatever your Assembly can afford. Checks should made be payable to: St. Francis Retreat Center (with K of C fireworks in the memo line) and mailed directly to: St. Francis Retreat Center, 703 E. Main St. DeWitt, Michigan Hanceville Pilgrimage 2018 Mark your calendars - the Poor Clare Nuns of Perpetual Adoration have once again invited Michigan District II to participate, in Color, in their Corpus Christi Mass and televised Procession at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Alabama. This will take place on Sunday, June 3, 2018 see the additional information included in this newsletter. As we have in the past, we will be presenting a donation to the Sisters and are again asking each Assembly for support toward that donation of at least $50. If you are able to assist, please send your check to our Faithful Comptroller, Former Master Robert Vandesteene, with Poor Clare Nuns noted in the memo line. Degree Team Led by Team Captain David Lennemann, Michigan District II has been known for having one of the best Fourth Degree teams in the Order. While we have a great team of dedicated Sir Knights in place, the secret to remaining the best in the Order is that we are always looking for dedicated men who have the ability to memorize the degree work and are willing to learn the roles to be members of the team. If you are interested or have questions, please contact David. Save the Dates Please also hold September 22, 2018 for the Lansing Diocesan Assembly which is scheduled to include a major procession from St, Marys Cathedral to the Jack Breslin Student Events Center on MSU s campus and a Diocesan wide Mass at the Breslin Center (more details to come). Finally, the Fr. Louis Hennepin Provincial Meeting is scheduled for October 12-14, 2018 (no U of M or MSU home games) back to Sterling Heights at the Wyndham Garden (formally Sterling Inn). Closing In closing - thank you for all you do to support your Assembly, our District and the Order and for your continued prayers, support, and encouragement. May God Bless you and your family in this joyous season and may God Bless the United States of America. SK David Buick MFD

District Executive/Lansing Assistant 5 Worthy Sir Knights and Lovely Ladies, Nationally only about 18% of knights join the Patriotic degree. There are many reasons why this is so, but I would offer we need to step up and invite men to join us. The Patriotic degree is important for the lessons learned during the Exemplification and for the good works done by our Assemblies. Please take time to call men in our Parishes and Councils and invite them to join us in Charlotte on April 21 st. With the spring exemplification coming up shortly in Charlotte, we have the obligation to ask our brother knights to complete the journey of attending all of the degrees of the Order. Attending the Admission, Formation and Knighthood degrees taught us the core lessons of our Order and how we can support our Catholic beliefs by our good works. We need to be sure these lessons are offered to others in our Faith who are not members of the Knights. They will never learn the lessons we have enjoyed and grow stronger in their Faith without you reaching out to them as a proposer and mentor to help them join us. Helping others move though the degrees is vital for us to continue to be a strong force for our Faith, our Priests, our Families and our communities. Of course once they have completed the first three degrees they are ready to join us in the Patriotic degree! If you have not done so in the past, we have found it very helpful for our candidates and their ladies to have a chance to talk about the Patriotic degree and what expect at the exemplification with one or more couples over a meal or even coffee/dessert. This tends to be a big help for the wife to help understand her new role as a lady of the Patriotic degree. On the District s web-site ( is the new Drill Manual for the Color Corps which includes the updated information for the wearing of the new uniform as well as other updates for the way we conduct our call-outs. Please take time to read and study these changes. Thanks for your work in supporting the Patriotic degree and the best District in the land. I hope God blesses you and your families during this season of Lent. SK Jim Kraus, DD, PGK, PFN The Knights of Columbus Color Corps has again been invited to participate in the Kalamazoo St. Patrick s Day Parade on Saturday, March 17. This is usually a great event with lots of exposure for the Knights and a very welcomed reception. We always get cheers and applause as we pass. Please consider joining us in a proud display of our order. Where: City of Kalamazoo; the parking lot across from the old 1616 Council Hall at 219 W. Cedar St. When: Saturday, March 17, 2018 Time: Participants will need to be at the parking lot by about 10:00 a.m. (parade starts at 11:00 a.m.). This will give us time to organize and walk the two blocks to the starting site. Who: Those with good shoes and strong legs (the route will be approx mile) Dress: New Uniform or full regalia and appropriate thermal undergarments. We will make the call to march related to weather at the site that morning by 10:30 am. Please contact Worthy Marshal Jeff Cypher if you have any questions at (269) (home) or at work (269) or by at lawscience@sbcglobal.net.

Senior Marshal Christmas and New Years are behind us and we begin the solemn days of Lent. So what do we have to look forward to? Of course there is the Church s most holy day, Easter. So what does your honor guard have to look forward to? Here are a few events. On April 21 at St. Mary Parish in Charlotte there will be the 75 th Michigan District 2 exemplification. Honor guard members are always needed. May, the month of our Mother Mary, gives us two opportunities to honor her with a living rosary. In front of the State Capitol on Saturday, May 12, we will gather families to pray and build the domestic church. Each year this event grows and this is expected to be the largest attended yet. On May 25 in front of the Grand Hotel during the State Convention we will pray the living rosary. This year all honor guard will have the opportunity to participate in the event. We can finish out the fraternal year at St. Francis Retreat Center in DeWitt at Faithfest on June 23. Faithfest is a day for Christian families to gather together and celebrate their faith in an atmosphere of upbeat, joyful participation. Bishop Boyea will celebrate an outdoor Mass with many priests attending. The honor guard will be part of the procession into Mass, assisting at Communion, and recessing the bishop and priests out of Mass. What does the next fraternal year have in store for the honor guard? The Diocese of Lansing will host their third Diocesan Assembly on September 22. It will begin with a procession of the Blessed Sacrament from St. Mary Cathedral to Michigan State University s Breslin Center. This 4.2 mile procession with be led by the honor guard. This will be a slow procession but we will need honor guard capable of walking this distance. There will be other opportunities for the honor guard to participate in the Mass, celebrated by Bishop Boyea, later in the day. Be sure to mark these events on your calendar. I know the council financial secretaries and assembly comptrollers are working hard to collect membership dues. Hopefully, at the March Michigan District 2 meeting at St. Jude on March 10 I can report that all present are in possession of current 3 rd and 4 th degree membership cards. As we recruit for the April 21, th degree exemplification look for and encourage candidates to join your assembly honor guard. Let him experience one of the most beneficial aspects of the 4 th degree. 6 Fraternally, Bill Currie Sr. Marshal VAVS Hello Everyone, Vivat Jesus. I wish to thank our immediate past VAVS Director, Sir Knight Gus Groat for his dedicated service to both the Knights of Columbus in the many positions he has held for our Order, but more so, for the work he has done with the Veterans Administration Volunteer Services. I have been working with SK Gus for two or three years as his VAVS Deputy. He is very much respected in Battle Creek, Ann Arbor, the State of Michigan and Nationally for his work in putting together Programs that have served our Defenders of Freedom.Thank you. My name is Jim Pitsch, I have been in the Knights of Columbus since 1975, a PGK PFN and now serving as District Deputy of District 43.As I await confirmation from Colonel Charles Gallina as your District 2 VAVS Director, I am working to put a VAVS Program together that we all can be very proud of. I have had a few meetings with the Battle Creek VAVS Director in seeing what District 2 can do for our Veterans. I will bring these thoughts to our District 2 Meeting. Some more immediate issues that we need to address is that Mr. Greenman feels we need to have three Deputy VAVS Directors. Also, there are many new mattresses that were donated for our Homeless Veterans at the Battle Creek VA. These mattresses need to be distributed throughout West Michigan from Benton Harbor to Muskegon, over to Lansing, and down to Coldwater, so I am asking Assemblies to contact me in getting this work done ASAP. We are also going to work on building the Snack Cart Group and will also be putting together a monthly schedule for Assemblies to collect items on the needs list for our Homeless Veterans that will be distributed at the District 2 Meeting. SK Gus Groat gave so much of his time that none of us knew about in providing activities at the Veterans Homes that we will continue. I am going to need a lot of help if we are going to provide the service as it has been. As I sort out this pile of paperwork, I will put all of our activities and needs together in a few pages and present them at the next District 2 Meeting. Thank you and God Bless. SK Jim Pitsch, DD

District Exemplification Assistant 7 Worthy Sir Knights, Lovely Ladies and all that are pondering this article, May the Lords Mercy &Blessings be with you today and into the future. Allowing his love to reflect through you to your families and all those he places in your daily paths to evangelize with his Mercy. Recently while sharing the Lords word with some faith formation students the paraphrased question was asked, What the heck is lent all about anyway? Which lead to the typical Cradle Catholic response of the 40 days represent the time Jesus spent in the wilderness prior to the beginning of his ministry..blaa..blaa..blaa. But, as with many other recent cases the Lord wasn t going to allow me to end the question with a simple rehearsed answer. Which led me on a journey to do some research and came across the following information to share. The key to understanding the meaning of Lent is simple: Baptism. Preparation for Baptism and for renewing baptismal commitment lies at the heart of the season. Since the Second Vatican Council, the Church has reemphasized the baptismal character of Lent, especially through the restoration of the Catechumenate and its Lenten rituals. Our challenge today is to renew our understanding of this important season of the Church year and to see how we can integrate our personal practices into this renewed perspective. Why is Baptism so important in our Lenten understanding? Lent as a 40-day season developed in the fourth century from three merging sources. The first was the ancient paschal fast that began as a two-day observance before Easter but was gradually lengthened to 40 days. The second was the catechumenate as a process of preparation for Baptism, including an intense period of preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation to be celebrated at Easter. The third was the Order of Penitents, which was modeled on the catechumenate and sought a second conversion for those who had fallen back into serious sin after Baptism. As the catechumens (candidates for Baptism) entered their final period of preparation for Baptism, the penitents and the rest of the community accompanied them on their journey and prepared to renew their baptismal vows at Easter. (Source: Catholic Online) Yes another Oh Yeah! moment. Which brings me to the next topic, Sustainability, it has often been documented that if a KofC member is encouraged to advance to their highest potential within the Order will have an increased probability of remaining an active Knight and participating family, which in turn will Revitalizing the Order for future generations. As an assistant to the District II Master Dave Buick one of my responsibilities is to work with our Assemblies on encouraging their Councils to offer members in good standings the opportunity to amalgamate with the Patriotic Degree of the Order. On April 21, 2018at St. Mary s Parish and School in Charlotte, we will have an opportunity to advance our brother Knights whom achieved the recognition of Full Knighthood along with their spouses to the status of Sir Knight (name) and Lady (name). Completing the fourth pillar of being a Knight of Columbus member, Patriotism which will strengthen their Council pillars of Charity, Unity & Fraternity. The host Assembly for the spring exemplification will be Bishop Povish Assembly #2815 with the very special Class Honoree, Sir Knight Dick Thelen, a World War 2 veteran and survivor of the USS Indianapolis. The Master and his event team are completing the final planning stages of this Patriotic Degree of the Order Exemplification, as is Lady Monica s team with organizing an informational and rewarding Ladies program. Another one of my responsibilities is the Exemplification Souvenir Book, the ad forms have been forwarded to the Faithful Navigators who have been asked to distribute them to their represented Councils. The ad, candidate and other exemplification forms are available on the District s web site ( under the Exemplification button. The Faithful Master is once again offering assembly incentives for Souvenir Book ads, which have become a useful fund raiser for participating Assembly. When an Assembly sells and submits funds between $501 and $1,000 in ads, 40%of the sales (over $501) will be rebated to that Assembly, with sales over$1,001 generating a rebate of 50% of the sales. As an example, if your Assembly sells and submits $2000 in ads, your Assembly would receive a rebate of almost $700 (40% for the $501 - $1000 sold and 50% for the sales over $1,001). Your Assembly will then need to send a check in the full amount of all ads payable to Michigan District II to the address on the agreements. Some reminders - Electronic Submission of Ads are the preferred. Ads submitted in MS Publisher, Word or PowerPoint formats or as a.pdf file are much cleaner when reproduced in the book. Please do not staple or otherwise deface the ad, the scanners used by the printer are very sensitive and will pick up the markings. If you have any questions please contact me r.lamay@mikofc.org. THANK YOU in advance for all your hard work as a member of District II and supporting the Exemplifications &Souvenir Books. SK Richard J. LaMay DD52, PGK

Patriotism 8 Patriotism is a virtue that is deeply rooted in the Catholic Church. It is defined as the love of one s fatherland. More importantly it defines us as members of a family and our responsibility to care for those within our families. Our fatherland if you will. Too often we hear from people we ask to join our assemblies that they are not aligned with our perspective. They have misinterpreted our desire for war or our alignment with certain political parties. This, as we know from our degrees is not true and accentuates the very need for these individuals to become part of Patriotic Degree, so they can learn what we stand for and assist in our goals of protecting our Catholic freedom. Equally important, is to get new perspectives involved in our assemblies so WE can learn what the values and mores of today are and how they have influence on our Patriotism and thus our Catholic faith. We need to think of these prospects as family whether they are within the confines of membership or not. They are our brothers and sisters in Christ. We must learn to adjust our thought process and become socially interactive with all Catholic citizens. On April 21 st we have a tremendous opportunity to add some of those new perspectives to our assemblies. Get involved with members in other Councils and have conversations with Grand Knights what they would like from the 4 th degree to assist them in activities and recruitment. Your interest in them will create interest for the 4 th Degree. With the simplification of required uniform for the degree along with the central location of Charlotte, Michigan as its venue. This Exemplification should be particularly attractive for those who have been on the fence from completing their journey as 4h Degree Knights. Make yourselves aware of Major (2 nd and 3 rd ) degrees in your area and if you can assist these candidates and make them aware of the advantages of completing their journey. If you need any assistance or have any questions, first visit this website: and if you still need assistance feel free to contact me at or skgaylendmeeks@gmail.com.
