1 ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE AND OUR LADY OF THE LAKE/MOUNT CARMEL IS A ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH WITH THE EUCHARIST AS THE CENTER OF ITS LIFE. OUR MISSION, AS DISCIPLES OF JESUS CHRIST, IS TO BUILD UP THE KINGDOM OF GOD BY LEADING, NOURISHING AND SERVING THE COMMUNITY IN WORD AND SACRAMENT. From the Pastor s Desk April 3, 2016 Divine Mercy Sunday This Sunday is Divine Mercy Sunday in a Year of Mercy as declared by our Holy Father, Pope Francis. We have been reminded for the past few weeks of God s mercy, of his forgiveness, of our sinfulness and of the love of a God who sent His only son to us that we might have life eternal. On Easter Sunday we celebrated the gift of God of His Only Begotten Son who was born, lived among us and died for us that, in His Resurrection, He might give us everlasting life. Now, in these weeks after we have celebrated that glorious event, we must witness what it all meant. For many the thrill is gone and we have returned to the same people we were before. Praying occasionally, especially when we are in need or in trouble, making excuses for our lack of faithfulness and so on. Like the crowds in Jerusalem so many years ago, many of us have simple gone home and await the next big event. Divine Mercy Sunday is an opportunity for us to renew that enthusiasm by admitting to ourselves that we are indeed in need of that mercy. We are called to profess our own weakness and reach out to that same God who came among us that we might have everlasting life. There is a story about a ship sailing a river that they were unfamiliar with in a time long ago. The ship was under sail but the crew was is a dire situation. Their fresh water supply had been ruined and they were in desperate need of drinking water. As luck would have it, they eventually saw another ship heading in their direction. The captain of the one ship called out to another to ask if they had any water to give them. They were dying of thirst and in desperate need. He was shocked to hear the reply that he should drop his buckets where he was. Thinking that the other captain was not going to help but was going to allow his crew to die he voiced his angry reply. It was then that the other captain explained that the river he was sailing was the Nile and that the water was fresh water. All the time the ship was suffering for lack of water their salvation at been right at hand but they did not know it. Divine Mercy Sunday is our opportunity to realize that our salvation is at hand, we simply have to reach out and search for it. Let us realize our own need and see the means of our own salvation right at hand and have the courage to reach out and drop our buckets where we stand. Readings for Divine Mercy Sunday First Reading: Acts 5:12-16 The people held the apostles in great esteem and brought sick people to them to be healed. Although some were afraid to be known, the number of Jesus' followers continued to grow steadily. Second Reading: Revelation 1:9-11a, 12-13, John depicts a vision of lamp-stands of gold and one like the Son of Man in a robe with a sash of gold. This apparition told John he had nothing to fear and then described himself as one who was dead but now lived again. He then instructed John to record any other visions he might have. Gospel: John 20:19-31 Jesus appeared to the disciples and breathed on them saying, "Receive the Holy Spirit." He gives them the power to forgive people's sins or hold them accountable. Thomas, who was not present, refused to believe Jesus had appeared until he came to them once more. Jesus told Thomas to believe and added, "Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed."

For those of you not familiar with a Columbarium, it is a Latin word that describes a collection of niches to house urns containing cremated human remains. Usually inscribed with the person s name and dates of birth and death, columbaria are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a churchyard or landscaped terrace. May the Lord who has blessed this project now be a final resting place for many of our loved ones. GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEDICATION OF ST.
