4 From the Desk of Father Davis W elcome to the third Sunday of Advent, traditionally called "Gaudete Sunday." As the rose candle is now illuminated on our Advent wreath and the dawning of Christmas draws nigh, our readings present us with an invitation to be joyful at what was made manifest in the Christmas miracle. The identity of the Messiah was made clear. Jesus, the Promised One of the ages, born in Bethlehem, and later pointed out by John the Baptist as the one who would baptize with spirit and fire, comes to his people. He did so historically. He does so again as we recall the anniversary of his birth. He now comes to us mysteriously under the veil of liturgical and sacramental signs. Yes; he comes to us in grace to "make justice and praise spring up before the nations." The children of Saint Theresa School get it. They captured this mystery of mysteries in their wonderful performance of the Christmas story this past Tuesday night. Stars, lambs, shepherds, kings and angels were all present to lift our spiritual appetite to the story of the mystery of God in history, beginning at Bethlehem. The Celestial choir which will have sung on Saturday night gets it too. Their musical selections, sung angelically, enable hearers to have souls that soar in longing for the peace and joy of this season. Given the imperfections, divisions, misunderstandings, the stressful hustle and bustle, selfish terrorism and rampant judgementalism that seemingly scar the interactions among people in our modern world, and even at this "most wonderful time of the year," it is refreshing to be reminded that there is One who has come (and who continually comes to us) bringing uplifting tidings of hope and healing, of freedom and release, of grace and favor from the God of heaven and earth, and even bringing the stabilizing "vindication by our God." Yes; in the face of so much contemporary acrimony on the news, aggression on our roads and streets, and silly conflicts between members of the same household, neighbors, or even parish, during this Advent and Christmas season our souls can be enlivened with the knowledge of the greatness of God, who desires to fill us with new life, bind our wounds, and heal the broken hearted. As Saint Paul beautifully says to the Thessalonians in our second reading this weekend, "the one who calls you is faithful, and he will accomplish" what he has set out to do. The Christ who brings light will cast out the darkness of gloom and doom. His light will be an antiseptic of spiritual sunshine, if we choose to sit under his rays. This Sunday, as we now begin to make immediate preparations for Christmas, recalling the story and entering into the divine plan, let us welcome Christ's light with joy, cleanse our hearts, prepare our souls, and illuminate our minds with the grace of this holy time. 5 Del Escritorio del Padre Davis B ienvenido al tercer domingo de Adviento, tradicionalmente llamado "Domingo Gaudete". Al estar iluminada la vela rosada en nuestra corona de Adviento y el amanecer de la Navidad se acerca, nuestras lecturas nos presentan una invitación a estar contentos con lo que se manifiesto en el milagro de la Navidad. La identidad del Mesías quedó en claro. Jesús, el Prometido de las edades, nacido en Belén, y luego señalado por Juan el Bautista como el que bautizaría con espíritu y fuego, viene a su pueblo. Lo hizo históricamente. Lo hace nuevamente cuando recordamos el aniversario de su nacimiento. Ahora viene a nosotros misteriosamente bajo el manto de signos litúrgicos y sacramentales. Sí; él viene a nosotros en gracia para "hacer que la justicia y la alabanza broten ante las naciones". Los niños de la escuela de Santa Teresita lo captaron. Ellos capturaron este misterio de misterios en su interpretación maravillosa de la historia de Navidad el pasado martes por la noche. El Cristo que trae la luz echará afuera la oscuridad de las tinieblas y la perdición. Su luz será un antiséptico del brillo espiritual del sol, si elegimos sentarnos bajo sus rayos. Este domingo, cuando comencemos a hacer preparativos inmediatos para Navidad, recordando la historia y entrando en el plan divino, démosle la bienvenida a la luz de Cristo con alegría, limpiemos nuestros corazones, preparemos nuestras almas e iluminemos nuestras mentes con la gracia de este tiempo santo. 6 Together Juntos HOW TO GO TO MASS NEXT WEEKEND Since Christmas falls on a Monday this year, the Fourth Week of Advent is only one day long! Because our liturgical celebrations of Sundays and Major Feasts begin the evening before (hence the Eves and Vigils), Masses on the evening of Sunday, December 24th this year count for CHRISTMAS, but NOT for the 4th Sunday of Advent. We have an obligation to attend Masses on BOTH of those Solemnities, so we have to go to two distinct Masses, one for SUNDAY and one for CHRISTMAS! Wondering how to navigate this complex Christmas falls on a Monday scenario next week? SUNDAY MASSES for the 4TH SUNDAY OF ADVENT will be celebrated on Saturday, December 23rd at 5:00 pm and on Sunday, December 24th at 7:30 am, 9:00 am, 10:30 am, and 12:30 pm (Spanish). CHRISTMAS MASSES will be celebrated on Sunday, December 24th at 5:00 pm, 7:00 pm, and 11:30 pm (Bilingual) and on Monday, December 25th at 9:00 am, 10:30 am, 12:30 pm (Spanish), and 5:00 pm. Can I go to Mass on Saturday evening (SUNDAY) and Monday (CHRISTMAS)? YES! Can I go to Mass on Saturday evening (SUNDAY) and Sunday evening (CHRISTMAS)? YES! Can I go to Mass on Sunday morning (SUNDAY) and then again on Sunday evening (CHRISTMAS)? YES, and you should receive Communion both times, too! 7 Worshipping the Lord Adorando al SeÑor On Wednesday, December 20th, beginning at 7:00pm in church, several priests will be available to assist the faithful with the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It would be an excellent occasion to come to confession and spiritually prepare for Christmas. All are welcome. The retreat provides a unique opportunity to pause from daily life and reflect on our marriages. It is also a great way to have fun and to meet other couples. Subsequent to the retreat, we have monthly meetings. These meetings not only strengthen our marriage but they are fun and create long-lasting friendships. Located in the back of church, near the Saint Anthony statue, the Poor Box is available to receive your donations, sacrifices, and gestures of almsgiving and penance which, in turn, are utilized to support and assist the poor, the needy, and those in emergency circumstances. Although lately the weekly Poor Box collection is around $110.00, the resources required to assist the needy are far more extensive. Last year, for example, more than $19,500 was spent by COTLF Charities organization in support of the poor and needy in our parish territory.
