St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth September 2, 2018 Dear Parishioners of St. John the Baptist: If you ve been in Church over the past five weeks or so, you may have detected something not-quite-right: it wasn t as cool as it had been earlier in the Summer. Perhaps you chalked it up to the heat and humidity outside, or that we d raised the temperature in Church in response to complaints about how chilly it was inside. Well, there were, in fact, some complaints from folks who found it necessary to wear a sweater to Church, but that s not where I m going. In the last full week of July, Nate, a technician with HVAC Services, Inc. (a heating and air-conditioning firm out of Howards Grove), was here almost every day, working on one of the two big units that service the Church. Its compressor was acting up and vibrating wildly. By the end of the week, we made the decision to shut that unit down before the vibrations burst the piping and coolant gushed forth. This meant the church would have to be cooled by the secondary unit, alone. So, we turned the temperature dial up a little to reduce stress on that secondary unit. We talked with Nate about repairing the primary unit. He said that scarcity of parts and the age of equipment would probably mean an expense of $30-40,000, and that because of the age of the equipment, there were no guarantees that either the repaired unit or the secondary one would last for very long. Nate explained that the units are as old as the building thirty-one years and have already out-lived their projected lifetime of twenty-five years. He added that the coolant used in our existing system is now considered environmentally unsafe and is prohibitively expensive, but to replace it would require re-tooling the entire system. Nate suggested we give serious thought to replacing both units before a major meltdown occur. So, we are in the process of procuring bids for new Trane units. The consistent range of the bids we re receiving is $85,000 - $90,000. We have enough in our Buildings and Grounds reserves to pay for this along with the new boilers we d already planned to install this Summer. Now, I ve already heard a voice or two suggest that we do a capital campaign to finance this project. I respectfully disagree. We already have several fund-raising effort on the table for this year, including both the Super Raffle and the Christian Women s Craft Fair in November, the biennial SJB School Auction next Spring, and the From Gratitude to Greatness Sustained Offertory Program that s just getting under way. It seems to me that we can only go to the well so often before we wind up robbing Peter to pay Paul. Besides, conducting a capital campaign requires a whole lot more lead time than we ve got if we re going to get the air conditioning repaired in a timely manner. I hope all of this makes sense to you. Perhaps it s time for a Town Hall meeting where we could talk about these things in greater detail as well as present the year-end financial report to you, talk about the budget for the fiscal year we just started last month, and explore where we re hoping to go with From Gratitude to Greatness. A blessed Labor Day to all of you. 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time September 2, 2018 The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) Last year, Compassionate Hearts Ministry presented information on one of the two healing sacraments of the Catholic Church: Anointing of the Sick. Since the inception of this series, the communal celebration of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick has taken place an a regularly scheduled basis and will continue to be offered throughout the coming year. This Fall, Compassionate Hearts Ministry will focus on the second Healing Sacrament: Reconciliation, (also called Confession). While we all have an opportunity to participate in communal penance service we d like to present information about the private Sacrament of Reconciliation that is available to you all year round, in this parish and the surrounding parishes in the Sheboygan County area or upon request. We will have several bulletin entries on this subject over the next several weeks. Please take time to read the upcoming information in the weekly bulletins and on the SJB website. We hope you find this inspirational. The process of seeking, receiving and celebrating God s mercy and forgiveness is meant to be a source of JOY. Our Lord is always ready and eager to bestow His healing love on us. Our goal in developing this series of bulletin announcements is to help encourage parishioners to encounter God in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, no matter how long one may have been away.
