St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth February 18, 2018 Dear Parishioners: Well, I bit the bullet. Took the plunge. Pushed the button. I d received a letter late last December telling me: You should contact us right away to apply for your retirement benefits. I turn 70 in late-may, so I figured February or March would be early enough. Last Tuesday, instead of doing something outlandish to mark Mardi Gras, I decided to drive into Sheboygan for a visit to the new Social Security Administration office. (It used to be a block north of the post office, but a couple of years ago they opened a brand- spanking-new shop on the west side of town near the Aurora clinic.) I arrived, finding several cars in the parking lot. But on entering the building, I saw no one sitting in the lobby. I used the automated sign-in procedure and was given a number (A107). It seemed a bit strange since the big wall screen prominently mentioned the now being served number as A111. Not one to be easily flustered, I took my seat (I always carry a book with me just in case an unexpected lull in the action or a prolonged wait occurs. I d just started a new one entitled Christianity and Process Thought: Spirituality for a Changing World by Joseph Bracken. He s the Jesuit who wrote Does God Roll Dice?, which I d just finished the day before. Bracken dabbles in an area called process theology, which builds upon the school of thought of the early Twentieth Century philosopher Alfred North Whitehead called Process Philosophy. It s really kind of an exciting field into which I found myself being sucked when I tripped over these titles in the footnotes of Wendy Crosby s doctoral thesis The Spirit of a Weak God late last year. I wrote about that six or seven weeks ago. But I digress....), pulled out my book and started to read. Before I could finish a paragraph, I heard a voice call A107. Looking around, I saw a glass partition with two chairs on my side and a desk with a receptionist on the far side: How can we help you today? I d like to apply for Social Security benefits. Do you have an appointment? No. Wound up that I had to make an appointment in order to be served. The good news is that it can be done over the telephone. Bad news is that the earliest appointment for a phone interview is Friday, March 9th. Back in my car, I looked at the instructions they gave me for preparing for the telephone interview; it appears the only thing I will need is a bank statement with an account number into which my monthly check can be deposited. This couldn t have been done last Tuesday with the receptionist who only had one customer in the waiting room in front of her? For Lent, I m giving up being sarcastic. Well, at least, I ll be working at it. While I try to develop a spirituality for my own changing world. Father Phil Wednesday Evenings at 6:30pm St. John the Baptist February 21, March 14 and 28 St. Thomas Aquinas February 28 St. Fridolin Chapel March 7 Welcome to the Newest Member of our Catholic Faith Family Baptized February 18, 2018 Claire Ann Moore Daughter of Paxton and Jennifer Moore May Claire, and her family, enjoy the blessings of the sacrament and continue in God s love throughout their lives. Lent 2018 PRAY FAST GIVE The days of Lent have traditionally been observed as a spiritual pilgrimage during which we symbolically travel with Jesus to his death on the cross. During Lent Calvary Stones are available in the vestibule of church. Please select a stone, write a prayer intention on the stone, and place the stone at the foot of the cross. Include that intention in your daily prayers as we, as a parish family, will pray for these intentions at all Masses throughout the Lenten Season. LENT WEEK TWO ~ February 24-25 The Prayer Shawl Ministry supports the work of both our Compassionate Hearts Ministry and Bereavement Ministry by knitting and crocheting prayer shawls and lap blankets. Please help by donating crocheted or knit shawls, lap blankets or yarn to this ministry. Please bring your donations to Mass next weekend. If your know of someone who would benefit from a visit or support from these ministries, please contact the parish office (920)892-4006.

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 18, 2018 St. John the Baptist Parish Presents an Evening of Inspiration UNSTOPPABLE CATHOLIC FAMILIES Wednesday, March 7 at 6:30pm in Church A special presentation by Grace Urbanski, author of Pray with Me: Seven Simple Ways to Pray with Your Children (Ave Maria Press, 2015). This mini-retreat will allow time to hear stories, laugh and reflect on how Jesus pays close attention to us every minute of the day. Child care provided. No need to register. A Message from the Principal ~ Technology has the ability to make teaching and learning more meaningful and fun! Our students have technology available readily at their fingertips. Students must be able to use technology in order to stay competitive in the workplace after graduating. Technology, when used correctly, is an important tool to help with the education process and prepare students for the future. Last year s Auction and Gala provided us with six new interactive boards that are being used in classrooms. Monetary donations have come in this school year for Chromebooks which our middle school students and our intermediate grade students are thrilled to be using. Another welcome addition to our technology department has been the Bee Bots which are exciting little robots that help our students with directional skills, estimating, sequencing and problem solving and the Osmo for the ipads. We are blessed with the technology that we have at St. John the Baptist School and are very appreciative for the generous donations for technology that we receive. Technology enhances the learning and engages the students in the learning process. Mrs. Amy Nelson Interactive Board Fun! Programming Bee Bots! Safeguarding All God s Family Safe Environment Education is required for all adults who are employed or who volunteer with children in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. If this describes you, or someone you know, we can help you. We are offering Confirmation classes for adults this Spring, on Wednesdays, March 21 to April 25. Classes will take place at the Reinl Center, 824 Superior Ave, Sheboygan from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. For more information and registration, call 920-452-0129. A Note from Meals On Wheels: Thank you to everyone who donated their homemade baked goods for our annual Meals On Wheels cookie distribution to our clients. Those who receive this special delivery are truly thrilled. Many notes of gratitude have been received. Special thanks also to the youth groups who decorated the box tops, they were beautiful. A quote from one client note: I want to thank you for all the Christmas treats. The box was so pretty and what I found inside were delicious. We would not be able to do this without the help from all of you. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. From the Staff at Meals On Wheels.
