REIFENBERG... Pastor for the Clustered Parishes of St. John the Baptist, Plymouth and St. Thomas Aquinas, Elkhart Lake

St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth December 17, 2017 Dear Parishioners: Rejoice! Again, I say: Rejoice! The Lord is near! That s this weekend s entrance antiphon from St. Paul s Letter to the Philippians (Phil 4:4-5). In latin, the imperative form of the verb rejoice is translated Gaudete! Ergo, the alternative name for the Third Sunday of Advent: Gaudete Sunday. Now, I don t know if I m rejoicing or on an adrenaline rush, or just plain giddy, or what. But with Christmas coming next Monday and my calendar filled with reconciliation services, Masses, meetings, appointments and social events, as a priest I am grateful for the experience of Christmases past, which demonstrate that, without a doubt, ready or not, no matter on which day of the week it happens to fall, Christmas like death (in the immortal words of Julius Caesar) will come when it will come. Nothing I can do can delay it; no matter how much I d like to expand my days to thirtyhour events for this coming week, that isn t going to happen. So, Christmas Eve will arrive right on schedule next Sunday, with Christmas Day to follow immediately. And then that wonderful almost full-week of near idleness on my schedule: no classroom visitation in school or faith formation, no committee meetings, no archdiocesan business. The week after Christmas is usually pretty tranquil. Oh, there is the occasional wedding or funeral. And there s always the possible emergency situation calling for a pastoral presence. But for the most part, that s one of the quietest, most relaxing weeks in the life of a priest. While my experience and expectations are my own, I pray that your Advent Season even if short this year is providing you with enough time and opportunity to accomplish everything that needs to be done in your situation to permit you to face the hustle and bustle of the next few days with a calm demeanor and gracious disposition. Interestingly enough, Paul s next lines to the Philippians are: Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Are you someone who was baptized and raised as a Catholic, but have not been confirmed? Have you missed out on being a Godparent for Baptism or a Sponsor for Confirmation because you have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation? Classes will take place at the Reinl Center, 824 Superior Ave, Sheboygan from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. For more information and registration, call 920-452-0129 or email hetebruegs@catholicnorth.org Fr. Third Sunday of Advent December 17, 2017 Walt Disney once said You can dream, create, design and build the most wonderful ideas in the world, but it requires people to make the dream a reality. This is certainly the case as a principal. The reality is that the learning experiences and projects that take place each school year could not happen without a great deal of commitment and support from the staff, parents and students. I am privileged to be a part of a school with highly capable and committed teachers and support staff. One of the critical factors of any successful school is the staff. There has never been a time when being a teacher has been more demanding or challenging. To our teachers and support staff, thank-you for your energy, passion and enthusiasm. What a privilege to be able to witness the joy that comes with the understanding or satisfaction of a problem solved, or the wonder of living new adventures through the world of literature. Our teachers are privileged each day to participate in their student s academic journey. I appreciate the many volunteers and the generous families that continue to support our mission. It is this support that helps to make our school thrive. When everyone works together and supports one another, we can ensure that our students will have a successful school year. As a school community we also treasure the opportunities where we worship together and celebrate our Friday Prayer Time assemblies. It is through these opportunities that we experience the message that God loves us in an engaging manner. I believe we have a unique place for students to learn. Thank you to all of the St. John the Baptist Parish and School families who continue to promote our school in a positive manner. I invite everyone to attend an open house on Sunday, January 28 th from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Come and see firsthand what the school all has to offer. After your open house visit, stop in the Church Hall for a bite to eat at the Knights of Columbus sponsored brat fry. I look forward to seeing both familiar and new faces!
