Pastor s Notes Last week was a really an interesting week. Planned Parenthood hired a public relations firm to undo the damage caused by their body part trade. One presidential candidate said that the video tapes were all lies. When I wrote my thesis on the origin of the Culture of Death in medicine, I also discovered that the claim that abortifacient contraceptives were not abortifacients was simply a lie. The lie was created by Planned Parenthood in 1962 in collaboration with the American Gynecological Society. The trick was to change the definition of conception without anybody but themselves knowing it. It was very effective. They did not need to use a public relations firm to do it because who would question the integrity of such a noble society? More and more of what we used to call science is becoming a version of political science. There has certainly been an outrage at the death of Cecil the Lion. Whatever happened to those poor Coptics who were decapitated? Poor Cecil s death by a rich man, who is trying to relive the glory days of Teddy Roosevelt s time seems to have gotten the passionate interests of millions. While God has given us domination over animals, such outrage might be better placed on the shootings of black men for traffic violations. I think the real reality is not that our callousness towards animals has caused a callousness towards humans, but rather rich people's callousness towards humans has caused them a callousness toward animals because they really do not see the difference between poor people and animals. After all, who benefitted from this last financial crisis and who got burned? Last week I was out of commission for a time with severe and unpredictable nose bleeds. I went to a very gentle and competent ENT physician for treatment. Two incredibly beautiful women entered the room absorbed in texting. (He also must do nose jobs.) Also, in the room was a young father with a little girl just getting ready to walk. What was very unusual about these two plastic women was they paid no attention to the funny antics of this little girl. They seemed so absorbed in their plastic devices that they had lost their heart strings to enjoy such a beautiful interaction between a father and his little daughter. I must confess that I never have seen a woman not react in some way to a cute little girl until that moment. Even with my bloody nose, I could not help to make eye contact with the curious darling. I am comforted by the fact that our president cancelled his safari while in Africa. Cecil s cruel death certainly impacted him, but I do wish Planned Parenthood s ghoulish sale of human body parts would give him second thoughts about the abortion industry. It may be all for science, but this was the same science found in the Nazi and Japanese death camps during World War II. Yes, Pope Francis is right. Without the Church we are left to the mercy of our imaginations all for science, of course. I wonder who is getting poor Cecil s body parts? Maybe that rich doctor can donate it to the president since he missed his chance. Just remember to add, like all the politicians, God bless America! and all the lies will be exonerated all for science, of course. I am particularly sorry this week for the men and women who have involved themselves with abortions and have received God s pardon and peace. The exposure of this Planned Parenthood horror may have opened up old wounds. If this is so, please remember that God s forgiveness is absolute and in the next life these mistakes will not come back to haunt them. If these incidents have reopened those wounds, please call the people at Project Rachael at 888-456-HOPE or more locally 609-406- 7435 for help. Also, for those who find themselves with an unplanned pregnancy and are looking for a quick fix from Planned Parenthood, please consider choosing life by calling the Good Council Homes at 800-723-8331. They offer long term solutions. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "I am the living bread come down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever." Three astonishing claims in one sentence. First: Jesus announces that he came from heaven. Second: He says that he is bread for people to eat. Third: He promises eternal life to anyone who eats this bread. What a lineup! What tremendous faith he expected of these people to believe such radical statements. First, he wants them to believe that he was sent by God the Father. He wants them to believe that he is one with God. If we ever struggle to believe this, just imagine how much harder it must have been for these folks who knew him as a normal guy: "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, 'I have come down from heaven'?" We have the benefit of Scripture, the tradition of the church, thousands of years of Christian witness, and the sacraments to convince us of who Jesus is. They didn't. Next, he does all this talking about bread. He refers to the miraculous manna--bread that fed the wandering Jews in the desert--and then claims that he is the new manna. He is the true bread; his flesh, in fact, is this bread. His body will become food. Again, we have the whole history of eucharistic faith, devotion, and miracles to rely on. They didn't. Finally, he goes so far as to say that in receiving him as bread, we will live forever. He promises that this intimate union with him through Communion brings with it the gift of eternal life. Yes, these three claims work together: Jesus is God. The bread of Communion is God. And this God we receive is the source of eternal life.

It was not you who chose me, says the Lord, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last. John 15:16 Greetings! We come together each week at St. Veronica s because we know who we are: God s people, followers of His Son, Jesus the Christ, called to go out to the world and tell the Good News with the Fire of His Love! But, you may ask, how can I get this Fire? Entering into worship as a whole person, with your mind, your heart, your body, who you are, your very being. We stand, we sit, we listen, we kneel, we sing, we open our hearts and our minds as we enter into a divine dialogue that brings us into the presence and mystery of God. Right here, right now! Would you like to experience more fully this Fire? You are invited to prayerfully discern if our Lord is indeed choosing you to bear fruit in the ministry of music. There are many opportunities to offer your talents in various styles teens and young adults, Joyful Praise, children s and adult choirs. Additionally, we have the ministries of cantor and instrumentalists (brass, strings, percussion.), and for those who may say, well, I have no musical talent, the ministry of operating the overhead projector, music librarian, and children s choir assistant. It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes a faith community to build up the kingdom of our God, one person at a time! To inquire about the boundless opportunities, please do visit with Regina Reale or any music minister after Mass.
